The Llewellyn Friday Flyer
October 20, 2023
Dear Families,
Last night, PPS held a listening and information session for parents providing updates and information about contract negotiations and contingency plans. While we hope that an agreement can still be reached and a strike is avoided, we want you to have the information you need to plan for your families' needs. PAT members have voted to strike and the strike will begin on November 1st if an agreement cannot be reached before hand.
If you were not able to attend, see the link below to watch a recording of the session. Please use this link to ask any questions you have. You can also go to pps.net/strikeresources to read about the contingency plans for learning, student support plans and more. Lastly, feel free to contact me and I will be happy to share any information I have.
Sincerely,
Principal Pam

Welcome Willow Amey!

What I like about Llewellyn
Hello Llewellyn Families! My name is Willow Amey, and I was fortunate enough to secure the fifth grade teaching position at your fabulous school.I have lived in California my entire life, where I taught in Napa for 20 years. My husband and I decided to buy a home to eventually move closer to our adult daughters living in Portland. So, we bought a home two blocks from Llewellyn School. Then, the pandemic happened, and that was our wake up call to officially move to Portland. My husband retired, and I left my job. This was a HUGE decision. Originally, I thought I would just substitute at the local schools around me, but quickly realized I missed having my own classroom. That's when I decided to apply to Llewellyn where I felt so at home. Here I am, and I couldn't be happier. All my manifestations have come to fruition.

PTA Happenings
Well it looks like you’ll have another opportunity to visit the pumpkin patch this weekend with what looks like no rain until Sunday! The rain really came in this week so a break is surely appreciated. Here’s to no wet and muddy soccer games!
Our PTA meeting on Tuesday night was definitely informative with our speakers, both from Moms Demand Action about gun safety and our own Llewellyn teacher, Ms. Coholan, sharing about ongoing teacher negotiations. Also, few of our parents won some vintage Llewellyn gear! Our next meeting will be a social hour so follow here and on all social media for our next location. We were very excited to see so many parents show up in support of our students and this awesome Llewellyn community.
Our annual PTA Charleston Wrap fundraiser is wrapping up today! Don’t forget to stock up on wrapping paper for all your holiday gift giving, and get some really nice gifts for all those people on your list. We’ve earned just over $3,600!
Volunteer Opportunity!! We still have two wonderful opportunities for you to get involved in our amazing Llewellyn PTA. We are in immediate need of a volunteer to head up the volunteer committee chair on our board. This person would be in charge of overseeing all committees and making sure they have volunteers to head up events and to navigate Konstella in order to communicate with committee chairs, create signups and post announcements.
The second is the lead committee chair for our Read-a-thon fundraiser in January. We are still building this new committee and look forward to sharing the details soon. Please email llewellynpta@gmail.com if you are interested in being a part of either of these positions. You would have full guidance and support from our board and we look forward to working with you to help our students to continue to get the resources and support that they need in the classroom.
The Monster March is back at Llewellyn and will be Sunday, October 29 at 3 p.m. Our 5th grade classes will be holding a bake sale during and after the march in order to raise money for their 5th grade overnight trip. Please support our students and come out in your best costumes to march with us and build our community spirit. Watch Konstella for opportunities to volunteer for this event and to help our 5th graders with their sale.
Our pumpkin carving contest will be on October 31! Bring in your decorated/carved pumpkin to school to win a prize! Students must be able to carry their own pumpkin and take it home after school. We look forward to seeing all the creative and fun designs you come up with.

COVID & FLU VACCINES
Children can receive the 2023-2024 COVID-19 and flu vaccines ahead of the respiratory virus season, but where they get vaccinated may depend on which health care coverage they have. More information can be found HERE.
New Report Cards for 2023-24 Academic Year
During the 2022-23 school year, a team of educators from over 20 PPS elementary schools and several central office departments came together to revise our K-5 report cards. Guided by family feedback, this team worked to ensure that our report cards are:
Clear and meaningful for families;
User-friendly for educators;
Aligned with Oregon standards; and,
Differentiated to represent the needs of all of our student populations.
The team felt strongly that the revised report cards should be accompanied by a Family Report Card Guide --so that families and educators can be well-supported in their use of these important communication tools. We welcome your feedback and suggestions regarding this resource by emailing K5academics@pps.net.
LLEWELLYN TEACHERS WILL BE SENDING HOME REPORT CARDS ON 11/13.
Resources for Educators & Families on the events in Israel & Gaza
Similar to the crisis in Ukraine, the effects of the attack and response in Israel & Gaza will be far-reaching. Images of terrorist violence against children, dead bodies, gun battles, missile strikes, and destroyed cars and buildings on the news and social media can cause psychological distress among students and adults. The Oregon Department of Education has gathered resources to support Educators and Families in discussing this critical issue.
Empoderando Familias (Empowering Families)
Upcoming Event - Empoderando Familias (Empowering Families)
This free Spanish language event represents a collaboration between all three counties in the metro area and Portland Public Schools. Empoderando Familias is focused on giving Spanish speaking families access to information about parenting for prevention of substance use. Strategies that are going to be highlighted include how to advocate for yourself in English speaking systems, setting boundaries for your kids that help them to grow up healthy, and how to maintain relationships and connections through the teen years. The event will also cover information about commonly used substances among youth. The Multnomah County event location is McDaniel High School. See this FLIER for more details!
