Knight Times
September 2022
Thank you so much to our students and staff for a great first few weeks of the school year! It was wonderul being together at Back to School Night. September is a busy month! Please review the upcoming important dates in our newsletter.
Next week we will start our Choice-Based Knights Enrichment and Enhancement Periods (KEEP), and this week our Knights will practice using the FlexiSCHED system to get ready for this change. KEEP occurs Monday-Thursday each week during the last 30 minutes of the school day (3:00-3:30). The purpose of this time is to provide all students with intervention and enrichment opportunities during the school day.
There are two types of KEEP periods: rotating KEEP and choice-based KEEP. Rotating KEEP periods occur on Mondays and Tuesdays while choice based KEEP periods occur on Wednesdays and Thursdays (beginning on September 14). During rotating KEEP, students return to periods 1, 2, or 3 on A days or periods 4, 5, or 6 on B days (see schedule if you scroll down when reviewing our bell schedule). For choice-based KEEP, students use the Flexisched tool allowing them to opt into various academic activities such as retaking assessments, tutoring sessions or support with teachers, study hall, or enrichment. The KEEP program also allows teachers to assign students to targeted interventions.
As always, thank you for taking the time to read our newsletter. We hope everyone enjoys their labor day tomorrow!

Counseling Update
Welcome back, KNIGHTS! We hope you were able to attend Back to School Night and have had a great first two weeks of school. We encourage you to check the college and career updates, as you will learn about various internships that become available throughout the year, Solano Community College’s registration process, scholarships, presentations, and much more.
We would also like to invite all 9th grade students and their parents/guardians as well as any new 10/11 grade students and their parents/guardians to attend our Four-Year Planning Night on September 21. See the flyer below for more details.
After School Support
Coach's Corner will start on Tuesday, Sept. 20 from 3:45-5:00pm in Room 8 and will continue every Tuesday. This after school program is for all students who would like to use the Chromebooks, do some homework or get some extra help in a quiet room. All students are welcome to attend!
Parent Portal & Aeries Gradebook
The image below explains the differences between Parent Portal and Parent Square. Parent Square is a communication system, whereas Parent Portal is the place where students' grades can be accessed.
When you first login to Parent Portal there are several steps you need to follow before you can proceed with viewing your student's grades including the parent verification and income survey. This is very important information to help us with funding programs at our school. Traditionally, this information was gathered through applications for students to access free/reduced lunch, but with school lunches being free to all, this is the new way the information is being collected. Below are some links to information about how to access the Parent Portal:
Information about Parent Portal
Tardy Policy
Starting this week, students who are not inside their classroom before the final bell rings will be marked tardy. Tardies can only be excused for the same legal reasons allowed for excused absences. Parents/guardians will received a message via Parent Square each time their student is tardy.
Tardy = Lunch Detention
Students who are tardy to class are assigned a 15-minute lunch detention. Upon late arrival to class, the teacher gives each tardy student a reminder slip for lunch detention. Students will serve lunch detention during the first lunch period following the tardy, so:
· Students tardy to periods 1, 2 ,4, or 5 will serve lunch detention on the same day.
· Students tardy to periods 3, 6, and KEEP or on a Friday will serve lunch detention on the following school day.
Detention Location:
· A Days: Room 13
· B Days: Room 16
Doors will be locked 5 minutes after the lunch bell rings, so be on time.
Students who fail to serve a lunch detention will be required to serve an after school detention on the following Friday.
Child Nutrition Update
Students will have access to free breakfast and lunch every day. Meal service will take place in the MPR. We do not yet have a tentative date for our kitchen to open, but we are hopeful that it will be opening by the start of October. The MPR will be temporarily closed on September 23-29 for some work to be completed, so lunch will be served at the flagpole during that time.

BUCKINGHAM SHIELD
The Buckingham SHIELD is our parent advisory group. Participation in this group will allow you to serve our students and staff and have a direct impact on the quality of your student's educational experience. Agendas and guest speakers are typically shared in advance via text/email and/or the SHIELD Facebook page. One of our main tasks is fundraising events to provide funds for student activities, scholarships, teacher grants and other school related projects.
The SHIELD parent group meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 PM. Our next meeting will be held in person at Mary's Pizza Shack on September 13th. Everyone is invited to attend. Please join us to give your input, stay informed and get involved!
