Vapes/E-Cigarettes Law Change
Dear Eagle Families,
We hope this message finds you well and excited for the 2023-2024 school year. We wanted to bring to your attention a significant change in the state law that might affect your child, and we believe collaboration and awareness are essential during this transition.
LEGISLATIVE CHANGE IN LAW REGARDING VAPES/E-CIGARETTES
At the recent July 24 Board of Trustees meeting, the 2023-2024 Student Code of Conduct was approved, incorporating a new law from the 88th Texas Legislature. The law in question is House Bill 114, passed and signed by Governor Greg Abbott on June 13. This law mandates that any student caught with a vape on school premises MUST be placed into a disciplinary alternative education program (DAEP).
We understand this is a significant departure from the consequences students faced in previous school years. It's essential to be aware that possession of a vape on a Prosper ISD campus or property will now lead to a DAEP placement, which could impact a student's participation in extracurricular and co-curricular activities.
What can you do as a parent?
As parents, you play a crucial role in helping your child understand the seriousness of this change. We know that vapes are accessible to students, and they may obtain them from peers or online. For this reason, discussing the potential consequences of possessing a vape on school grounds with your child would be beneficial. It's essential to remember that even well-behaved students can make mistakes, and guidance from parents is invaluable in helping them make the right choices.
Rest assured, we will inform you if there are any additional changes related to this law. We aim to create a safe and healthy environment for all students, and collaboration between families and campus administrators is the key to achieving this.
Thank you for your attention to this critical matter, and we look forward to working together for a successful and positive school year!
Sincerely,
Nicholas Jones
Principal - Prosper High School
