Dear Families,
February 7th and 8th are designated for Parent Teacher Conferences this year. We will be holding 15 minute conferences. Parent Teacher Conferences are a terrific opportunity for staff and parents to partner together for each child’s success. All conferences will be held with your child’s Math teacher. Below are the details about how they will be held based on the date of the conference.
Wednesday, February 7th:
- Conferences from 1:15-4:15pm will be IN PERSON at CCES.
- Conferences from 4:15-7:45pm will be VIRTUAL. A google link will be sent.
Thursday, February 8th:
- All Conferences will be VIRTUAL - A google link will be sent.
The Google Meet link will be sent to you with your confirmation email. If you have questions, please email your child’s math teacher.
Please note, if your child has 5th Grade GT Math with Mrs. Register, you will sign up for a conference with her. She will be communicating more with parents.
Related Arts Info:
In addition, our Related Arts teachers will be holding office hours on February 7th from 1:15-2:15pm to answer any general questions about their classes and curriculum. Please use the link below to join them anytime from 1:15-2:15 that day if you wish. In addition, they have conference slots set up. If you have questions about your individual child, you can sign-up for a conference with that particular Related Arts teacher. If none of the days/times work for you, please email them directly to coordinate a time.

If your conference is virtual, once you enter the google link, you will be put in a “holding space” until the teacher admits you. Because many conferences will be back-to-back, please only log on one minute before your designated time. If you have technology challenges, check your email as your child’s teacher will reach out to you that way. You can also call the school for assistance.
Scheduling Conferences:
Beginning Monday, January 22nd at 8:00 am, you can log into HCPSS Connect to view and select from the time slots provided by the teacher for conferences. Step-by-step directions are below. If you do not have access to HCPSS Connect, please call the school for assistance at 410-313-6866.

Select a time slot for your conference
You will have access through Friday, February 2nd at 4:00 pm to schedule your child’s conference by logging into HCPSS Connect.

Road to Kindergarten
Save the date! HCPSS’ Road to Kindergarten workshops have begun and continue through the end of the month. Each workshop will provide information on expectations for school readiness, the HCPSS kindergarten program, and more. Childcare will be available for children ages 2 and older. No registration is required, but attendees are encouraged to allow ample time for parking, childcare drop off, and check in.
Great Kindness Challenge January 22-26
Next week Clemens Crossing will participate in the Great Kindness Challenge. Each year over 19 million students in over 39 thousand schools, all over the world join together to promote a world of kindness! Students will receive a checklist of suggested acts of kindness. Students check off activities as they complete them. Feel free to come up with your own! Students can turn in the checklists during the week of January 29 – February 2. All students who participate will receive 2 paw tickets from Mrs. Rogers. As Harold Kushner said, “When you are kind to others, it not only changes you, it changes the world.”

Come Work at Clemens Crossing as a Temporary Employee!
We are looking for caring and compassionate individuals to assist students with disabilities who require direct adult supervision throughout the school day. The position works under the daily supervision of the school administration and the direction of a special education teacher and/or a classroom teacher. Some experience working with children or individuals with disabilities preferred. Details regarding the position are below.
Temporary Employee (TE) positions are with Social Service Consultants, Ltd.
Compensation is $15.00 per hour
The hours are 9:15 AM – 3:45 PM Monday-Friday.

MAP - Measured Academic Progress
Starting this week, students in grades 1-5 will take the Measured Academic Progress (MAP) assessment. The MAP window runs through February 16th. Each grade level team will send out messages letting parents know the exact dates for testing. The data from the MAP assessment will help schools and teachers measure your student’s academic progress. The MAP test does not affect grades and the difficulty adjusts depending on how your child responds. It is normal for students to only answer about half the questions correctly. Please make sure your child has headphones at school since they will be used for testing throughout the school year.

HCPSS and The Council of Elders (TCOE) Community Academy
Processes for Parent Empowerment:
The next HCPSS and The Council of Elders (TCOE) Community Academy will take place on January 27 from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. Parents and families are invited to attend a virtual session regarding parent advocacy topics include: Bullying, Parent Concerns, Special Education, Advanced Placement. Representatives from HCPSS will provide resources. This session is for families of students at the elementary, middle, or high school levels and will be held virtually. The annual Black History Expo sponsored by the National Panhellenic Council of Howard County and the Howard County Public School System will be held on February 17 at Long Reach HS from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The theme of this year’s event is “African Americans and the Arts.”
HCPSS student organizations are invited to participate with exhibits that speak to the theme "African Americans and the Arts" (exhibit fee is waived), as assistants in various areas, or provide program performances. Students can receive community service hours for their participation. Registration forms for exhibitors, vendors and program performances are included in the Black History Expo packet. The deadline to register to participate is January 20,

Pull those TABS, Cougars! Let’s turn TRASH into TREASURE.
Why: Our school will be participating in the “Pull Tab Program” to help benefit the Maryland Ronald McDonald House Charities.
Who: Everyone! Led by our very own 5th Grade Eco-Leaders.
Where: Send your tabs in with your student and have them place them in the bin in their pod area.
When: We will collect tabs through the first week of June.

Pet owners, Roger and Anita, live happily in London with their dalmatians, Pongo and Perdita, stalwart dogs devoted to raising their puppies. When the monstrous Cruella de Vil plots to steal the puppies for her new fur coat, the dalmatians rally all the dogs of London for a daring rescue!

Chess Club with Magnus Academy: Tuesdays starting January 30 (open K-5)

Learn chess with Magnus Academy, five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen’s academy! We’ve taught 100,000 children to play including state & national champions, but most students are beginners looking to learn a new skill and have FUN. Class time is divided between lessons and practice games. Lessons range from the basic rules to advanced tournament strategies.
Students will have the opportunity to play in tournaments (in-person and online) outside of club time. This in-person club includes free online extras including weekly practice tournaments, a Chesskid Gold membership ($69 value!), and an event with a chess celebrity. Last year's guests were World Champion Magnus Carlsen and Judit Polgar (the best female chess player of all time). All chess supplies provided. All skill levels are welcome. WINTER 2024: Secret Agent Academy 🕵️
"Secret Agent Academy" is a STE(A)M-focused after school class with a spy-themed curriculum. The class will include a range of hands-on activities and challenges that will encourage students to use critical thinking and problem-solving skills. They will learn about the science of encryption and code-breaking, as well as the physics of motion and energy. Students will also explore the world of forensic science, analyzing fingerprints, DNA samples, and other evidence to solve mysteries. Led by experienced instructors, students will work collaboratively and have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in a final mission. The class aims to excite and inspire students about STE(A)M and encourage further studies in science and technology.

Change of Address
HCPSS parents/guardians are required by Board of Education Policy 9000 Student Residency, Eligibility, Enrollment and Assignment to notify HCPSS if they move to a new home address by submitting residency documentation to their student’s current school. Students who have a change of residence on or after the first day of the 2023-2024 school year must request a student reassignment in order to complete the school year at their previous school.

Cub Scout Pack 618
Cub Scout Pack 618 has fun and educational activities planned every month, with awesome leaders and cool kids! On Saturday (pending weather closures) we have an awesome day of STEM exploration, and then the Klondike Derby on January 27th where the 4th and 5th graders get to pull a sled through the park and all the kids learn about the Klondike gold rush of 1898 and living and working in weather like ours today! Coming up in February we have our annual Pinewood Derby, where kids design and build their own racecars and race against their dens, the pack, and more. There's still time to join!
