Universal Dyslexia Screener Information (K-2)
Dear Parent or Guardian,
Indiana Code 20-35.5 requires all Indiana schools to administer a universal screener for learning characteristics related to dyslexia within the first 90 days of school.
Dyslexia is a learning disorder that involves difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words (decoding). Also called a reading disability, dyslexia affects areas of the brain that process language (Mayo Clinic, 2017).
All students in kindergarten, grade one, and grade two will be given the screener within the first 90 days of school. Parents of students who are determined to be “at risk” or “at some risk” for learning characteristics related to dyslexia will be notified of screener results and be provided with the next steps of intervention. Parents will be asked for permission to administer Level I and Level II diagnostic assessments. Parents of students who are not at risk for characteristics related to dyslexia will be notified of screener results and will resume regular educational programming.
Please contact Mrs. Heady or Mr. Jaworski by email or call the school (765-675-7397) with any questions or concerns regarding the universal dyslexia screener requirements.
Sincerely,
Mr. Johnson - Tipton Elementary Principal (bjohnson@tcsc.k12.in.us)
Mr. Larrison - Tipton Elementary Assistant Principal (jlarrison@tcsc.k12.in.us)
Mrs. Heady - Title 1 Teacher (theady@tcsc.k12.in.us)
Mr. Jaworski - Director of Student Learning and Achievement (sjaworski@tcsc.k12.in.us)

Indy Honor Flight
Indy Honor Flight transports WWII, Korea and Vietnam veterans to see their memorials in Washington, D.C. For free! Indy Honor Flight is a non-profit organization created solely to honor Indiana’s veterans for their service and sacrifice. Top priority is given to the oldest veterans. Our goal is to get the most senior veterans to visit the memorials built for them before it is too late. We also give priority to terminally ill veterans.
TES K-Kids will be sponsoring a drive to collect money to send Veterans to Washington DC. We will have dress up days to celebrate the week of fundraising. The collection dates are November 7-11 to coincide with Veteran's Day week.
My Closet
"My Closet" (A New Clothing Pantry)
What Is “My Closet”?
“My Closet” is a clothing pantry where Tipton Community School Corporation and partners in the community come together to provide new, name brand clothes free of charge to students in need. Students who attend Tipton Community School Corporation are allowed to “shop” for a jacket, shirt, pants, socks, underwear and receive a haircut certificate from “Absolutely You” Salon. Students may “shop” one time each semester. Everything is free, and parents do not need to meet strict income guidelines. The only requirement is the parents / guardians feel the student needs a new outfit and they cannot afford to buy one. All students in grades Pre-K through Seniors in high school are eligible.
How Do I Set Up An Appointment?
Anyone wanting to schedule an appointment to “shop” should contact Mrs. Schultz, Program Director by calling 317-677-3477 or 675-7521 ext. 2235. (These are new numbers, the old one will not work).
Winter Coats Available in October
Winter coats, hats and gloves are available beginning October 17th. Students in need of a coat are able to get one at no cost. They are limited to one each school year. Contact Mrs. Schultz to set up a time to “shop” for a coat.
How Is “My Closet” Funded?
“My Closet” is funded by the generous people of Tipton County and others throughout Indiana. Funds come from local churches, businesses, philanthropic groups and individuals who want to help families that are struggling financially. These donors have joined TCSC in the belief that every child deserves to have a new outfit, good shoes and a warm winter coat. Not only are clothes a basic necessity, but a new outfit can help boost self-esteem.
Jubilee Christmas
Applications for Jubilee Christmas are available through Mrs. Schultz beginning October 1st. To obtain an application for help at Christmas, please contact Mrs. Schultz at 675-7521 ext. 2235 or 317-677-3477.

NOTES FROM PARENTS
HOMEWORK
- Kindergarten: 10 minutes per night
- Grades 1-2: 20 minutes per night
- Grades 3-5: 30 minutes per night
These minutes are the maximum your child should have per night. If you are noticing that your child is spending more than this number on a consistent basis, please make your child's teacher aware. Open communication between home and school is a key component in working together for student success.
Lunch Menu for November
Monthly Lesson from Ms. Carter - November
This month, I will be having a discussion with students in Grades K-5 about the importance of gratitude. "Gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships" (Harvard Medical School).
Students will also have an opportunity to contribute to our school wide thankfulness project. Students and staff can write and/or draw something they are thankful for on individual paper leaves. Those leaves will then be added to a bulletin board that makes up our TES Thankfulness Trees.
