Updated Library Videos
Over the last few years there have been many changes to the the library building, services, and website. To reflect these changes, some of our most commonly used videos have been updated. These new videos can be accessed in different ways: via our YouTube channel or on our website's tutorials page. These videos, as well as others, are also featured in our subject and course guides. Faculty can embed these videos in their Canvas courses to provide students with a quick and up-to-date introduction to the library. All of the library videos are produced with accessibility in mind and include closed captioning.
Library Virtual Tours
These brief videos, running 6 minutes or less, introduce students to the services, resources, and amenities of each floor. As the library has many new, relocated, and renovated spaces over the last few years, these videos can help orient students and introduce them to what the library has to offer. Click the images to watch the videos.
Library Homepage Tutorial
This tutorial provides an overview of how to navigate the library website, search using the main search box, and access the library's digital resources remotely. The video is a bit longer (16 minutes), but it is bookmarked so students can easily skip between sections. Click the image watch the video.
Student Worker Spotlight
Raegan Lindsey
Hello! I am Raegan Lindsey and currently work at the Research Help Desk at Carmichael Library. I am a senior History and English double major. After graduation, I am attending the University of Alabama’s Graduate School for Library and Information Science with the goal of becoming a law librarian. Eventually, I want to get my law degree and work in Copyright and Patent Law. While an undergraduate I have had so many amazing opportunities, one of them being the chance to participate in Undergraduate Research Day. My research project has helped develop me into a better researcher, writer, and more disciplined student.
Letter from the Director
Last week, we had a visit from a UM alumnus who was a student back when Carmichael Library was first built, in 1968. He and his friends helped move the entire book collection from the old library, which was located in Wills Hall, to their new home in Carmichael Library. As a reward, each of the students who helped with the move was granted use of their very own library carrel for a year!
Remarkably, we still have a number of those 56-year-old carrels in the library – along with dozens of the original wooden tables and nearly 400 incredibly sturdy chairs. The “traditional look” provided by these tables and chairs still dominates our much-used group study floor on the ground level of the building; now, with spring in the air, we are hopeful that we will soon be able to envision a new look and feel for this space. Stay tuned for more details as the vision evolves!

Vallo Vault: UM's Digital Archives and Scholarship Hub
We are excited to announce the launch of UM's institutional repository. This open and searchable site is home to the scholarly works of UM faculty and students. It also features archival collections related to the history of the university and the city of Montevallo. Student projects like dissertations, theses, and undergraduate research will be featured. Faculty works such as articles, conference papers, presentations, and more will be added. A few works are already in the repository to demonstrate the potential of the platform. And we look forward to future contributions! To learn more, visit Vallo Vault.

Black History Month 2024
In celebration of Black History Month, the library curated books, ebooks, DVDs, and other resources to display on the main (first) floor of the library and online.
In addition, this year our display received a remarkable enhancement due to the generosity of Elvin Thompson, a historian and author who specializes in tracing African American ancestry. He has lent us some of his collection of rare and antique Black history books and memorabilia which can be viewed as part of our Black History Month display on the first floor.
In addition, on Tuesday, February 27th, Mr. Thompson will give a presentation titled "Embracing Heritage: The Thompson's Black History Treasury". It will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the J.A. Brown Room, and all are welcome to attend.
