Parkway Home
For 12 years, students in the Building Renovations program at Lake Shore High School have been giving a drastic makeover to a 1,400-square-foot house on Parkway Street in St. Clair Shores. The home needed a lot of work, which was a bonus for the district because it provided plenty of real-life learning experiences. The fixer-upper was a foreclosed, plighted home that the district was committed to improving, while improving our community.
21213 is the house number, a place where students dedicate hours to service learning every year. Since 2011, students have completed several DYI projects which require electrical knowledge for lighting, heating, cooling, and operation of appliances.
From eco-friendly and trendy to labor-intensive and dirty, students are learning skilled trades that will, not only save them both time and money in the future, but also expose students to incredible career opportunities in the fields of electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and General Construction. They have installed electrical, plumbing, patio brick pavers, doors, and fences under the direction of experts in these fields as well as their Career and Technical Education teacher. They have learned the interior painting process which includes preparing the surface, using a primer, taping, and the paint color selection process. They have knowledge of fixing common home problems such as a leaky faucet or cabinet doors that won’t close properly.
Class of 2024's Erich Henze enjoys construction and has considered it as his career path. His dad, with the same name, is his biggest influence. The project began under retired Building Trades teacher Mr. Chris Mazzola. Like Mr. Mazzola, Erich is a handyman himself. "Aluminum bending is my favorite. I feel satisfied when I match the roof perfectly," he said. Erich was a huge help with the finish carpentry and should feel proud of his efforts.
Now that the project is complete, the Parkway home is in the process of being sold and proceeds from the sale will support future Building Trades projects. The current CTE teacher Mr. Winters will make his predecessor proud as he works with his current classes to build a blueprint for the future.
Thank you to Media Productions 2 students Jimmy Sheen and Abby Smith for assisting Realtor Kelly Demske with the preparation of the listing which is located here.

Student Count Day
Student Count Day for the State of Michigan is Wednesday, October 2nd, 2024. It is important for students to attend classes as verification of their attendance on Wednesday; It is one of two days during the school year which the enrollment taken helps determine how much state aid schools receive.
Students are more likely to succeed in academics when they attend school consistently. Please make every attempt to be present on this day and every day.
Thank you to our marvelous 15 Countesses of Lake Shore Public Schools who are tasked with the responsibility of "counting" each student.
Can we count on you to be present on Count Day? Missing just 2 days a month means a child is missing 10% of the school year.

Positivity Project
P2 Calendar
Under the guiding principles of our districtwide initiative, the Positivity Project, the #PositivityInAction mindset is our top priority. Because of our goal to inspire students to build positive relationships and become their best selves, we invite you to follow this Positivity Project Calendar. Note: We have made a few changes to this calendar; All adjustments are located on our District Events Calendar.
This calendar outlines all 24 character strengths, 1 highlighted per week. Our teachers create engaging and impactful lessons — differentiated by grade-level — and share through presentations, student recognitions, classroom discussions, and building-specific displays.
People with the character strength of teamwork work well as a member of a group or team. They are loyal and sacrifice their individual desires for the greater good.
A high school store plays a significant role in the educational ecosystem by offering a range of benefits to both students and the school community as a whole. These small, on-campus shops, often managed and operated by students, go beyond mere convenience. They serve as practical learning environments, fostering essential life skills and contributing to the overall growth and development of young minds.
Located inside Lake Shore High School, the Shorian Shop features popular clothing merchandise, tasty treats, and Lake Shore trinkets. Our school store offers the chance to teach upperclassmen real-world skills like marketing and sales, accounting, and employability skills that will last a lifetime.
Student employees are a team, assigned to several tasks. Examples include showing up to their store position on time, ready to do work, managing the cash register accurately, and taking responsibility for their own actions.
Beginning in October, the Shorian Shop is open on weekdays, with the exception of Wednesdays, from 11:13-12:55pm inside the new Student Union at LSHS.
Jan Radlick, Marketing and Sales teacher, said, "These students are the cream of the crop, great kids, and vetted by other teachers to serve their peers. They have the best character. Our remodeled and expanded store will be great for students and other customers. This year I have one of the best management teams ever, and I think it is going to be a great year."
Thank you store managers, Tommy Ahearn, Gage Kolley, Jack Milstead, and Grace VanDenstorm, and our 16 student sales assistants in the Marketing and Sales class who provide this service to our school.
Looking forward, we are excited to celebrate OPEN-MINDEDNESS (9/30-10/4) and OPM - Being present and giving others my attention (10/7-11).
Stay Safe
OK2SAY Student Safety Program
See something? Say something.
OK2SAY is the student safety program which allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at school students, school employees, and schools. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.
Anyone can report tips on criminal activities or potential harm directed at students, school employees, or schools. Tips can be submitted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
While continually evolving and reviewed annually, on this Safety and Security webpage you will find a list of recent and current safety measures implemented by Lake Shore Public Schools to provide the safest environment for our students and staff.
Inspiration
College Fair
Over 50 institutions, including 4-year universities, 2-year colleges, trade schools, and military reps, were in attendance at our 2nd annual College Fair, providing information on post-secondary options, and giving Shorians direction for future decisions.
Senior Ariel Dewaele appreciated this time-saving opportunity at Lake Shore High School. She enjoys reading and was excited to find out more about journalism programs as she visited different informational tables. She was keeping an open mind and wanted to explore her options. On the other hand, Elliana Godin entered the fair with a plan. She will be majoring in business with a goal of opening her own cosmetology franchise. She likes the idea of being debt-free by choosing a community college, but she also finds the living away from home, dorm-route to be exciting.
Senior Russell Yasoni from North Lake High School described his post-secondary plan as a bit clueless. He visited the fair feeling overwhelmed, but after listening to admissions advisors and asking questions, he had a clearer picture of how he could use his interest in math for a variety of career paths. He even found himself considering the Army.
Our Counseling Office continues to invite advisors to Lake Shore High School during all lunch hours.
Upperclassmen are already receiving endless emails and popup ads which may add to the confusion of where to go. This event helped students get questions answered and discover schools they may not have considered.
Thank you Karah Tanski, LSHS College Advisor, for arranging this experience for our Shorians! She even kicked off the year with a campus tour last week at Michigan State University with 38 Juniors and Seniors in attendance!
October is Michigan College Month! Many schools are waiving application fees so the time to apply is now!
Be Unique
Students in Ms. Wilson's 2nd grade class at Rodgers Elementary read "The Crayon Box That Talked" by Shane DeRolf, a story which highlights what makes everyone unique. They then drew what makes them unique inside their own crayons. In his response, Charlie Hamon was proud of his ability to play the guitar. He said, "My dad Matt plays in a band and got me excited about it." Connor Combs claimed that his special talent is playing baseball with the Saint Clair Shores Little League team. He shared, "I love batting!" These elementary students, at age 7, are full of talent!
Third graders in Mrs. Spriet's class at Masonic Heights Elementary listened to the story, Be You! by Peter H. Reynolds. They learned about different traits that make us each unique and special. Students were then asked to make a self-portrait and come up with 3 different things that made each of them unique.
Viviana Tremmel explained the qualities that made her different. She said, "I sing, dance, and really enjoy math." She went on to tell us that she enjoys demonstrating how to solve math problems using different styles of thinking. Multiplication is her favorite. Go Viviana!
These activities demonstrate that no matter where we come from or what we look like, when we all work together we can create something beautiful. That is the beauty Lake Shore Public Schools strives to cultivate in both its students and community.
Thank you to Hall Monitor Bob Kubiak at Kennedy Middle School for reminding us that Kind is the New Cool. This attribute isn't unique at all for our students; Instead, it is the driving force behind everything we do. And that's exactly how we treat our classmates.
Innovation
A New Lunchtime Space
School lunch time is a chance for students to take a break from their classes, relax in a friendly setting, and refuel for the day.
Lake Shore's Food Service Department is committed to providing and serving foods that best enhance our students' academic, athletic and personal performance. We recognize that breakfast and lunch time is as much about learning as the classroom.
Through creative marketing and nutritional education, they strive to teach children about the best choices for life-long health and wellness, serving over 54 school breakfasts and 451 lunches on the first day of school at LSHS and 1,788 meals in total for the entire district!
As students step through the doors of the newly renovated cafeteria, they are greeted by the tantalizing aroma of freshly prepared meals wafting through the air. Gone are the drab lines and monotone colors of the past; in their place, a feast for the senses awaits. The space will be alive with color, texture, and personality, reflecting the diverse tastes and interests of the student body.
Director of Food Service Tina Morris added, "A whole new ambiance can be found inside the cafeteria with refreshed lines and decor as well as the fun happenings with our Global Eats programs featuring dishes from countries around the world!"
We also enjoyed watching Yearbook students brainstorm cover ideas inside, what they referred to as the "conversation cove". What a great space to foster collaboration!
The wagon transportation systems allows for a safe way to shuttle lunch boxes to and from the elementary cafeteria. Our classroom leaders enjoy this job despite carrying only temporary licenses. It is the small acts of kindness that fuel the school.
Constitution Day
Happy 237th Anniversary to "We, the People"!
Constitution and Citizenship Day commemorates the day the US Constitution was signed in Philadelphia on September 17, 1787 and honors all who have become citizens.
In Mr. Spriet's homeroom class at Lake Shore High School, students were tasked with reading aloud our constitution's preamble and understanding the ideals conveyed in the US Constitution. Led by Student Teacher Mr. Hoehing, students worked in groups to find key words from the US Constitution's preamble, and compared that with the preamble of another country's constitution. He selected constitutions from Honduras and Senegal because he has a student who was born there and another who speaks the language. Kudos to Mr. Hoehing for designing lessons influenced by student backgrounds.
Mr. Hoehing is a '22 graduate of Eastern Michigan University and holds a Bachelor's degree in Political Science and Communication. He is looking forward to refining his craft with teacher leaders Mr. Spriet, Mrs. Stuckey, and Mrs. Tharme.
Mrs. Holtz, veteran teacher of Kennedy Middle School for 26 years, created a scavenger hunt for her 8th graders in U.S. History. She enjoys raising awareness and historical perspective for her 28 students who are currently enrolled.
In Mrs. Srodawa's class at Violet Elementary, 1st grade students created their own classroom constitution. They came up with Be Kind, Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Trustworthy as their rules to lead the way. Coincidently, those are also key traits for being a Violet All-Star! Every student made a promise to uphold those actions by signing their constitution with their favorite Crayola marker.
In the end, students learned about amendments, congress, states that ratified the Constitution, and many other important facts together while citing the article, section, and clause for verification and creating their own version of it.
Celebration
Color Runs
Color, slime, pie — OH MY!
Our elementary Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) leaders facilitated our Color Runs fundraising events for students totaling $84,269.63 between Masonic Heights ($46,074.35) and Rodgers Elementary ($38,195.28)! Violet Elementary has scheduled their event for Friday, October 11th.
The PTO works to encourage interaction between family and school, serve as a source of support, and work with teachers, staff, and the community at large to improve our children's educational experience.
At Masonic Heights Elementary and Rodgers Elementary assemblies, students celebrated Stephen Covey's habit of highly effective people, Begin with the End in Mind, by setting goals and raising money to fund assemblies, teacher resources, field trips and transportation, one school, one book, and more!
The top 3 fundraisers at Masonic Heights were Jayce, Maverick, and Charlotte and at Rodgers were Mila, James, and Kaylie!
Assemblies consisted of celebratory announcements, cheer and band performances, and students and staff both sharing their goal stories. Tigers and Rockets ended their celebrations with color runs where students were doused from head-to-toe in different colored powder!
Thank you for another successful event that teaches all of us about generosity; We also appreciate the LSHS Band and Cheer team for the being present for our elementary kids.

Pie
Ms. Morgan's 2nd graders hit their Color Run class goal of $800 and celebrated at Rodgers Elementary by throwing a pie in their teacher's face!
"You look like a marshmallow," laughed one child. In pairs, students took turns placing pies in her face. It was brave. It was selfless. It was everything her class needed to turn any frown upside down in that one moment.
Coworker Ann Miller complimented, "Ms. Morgan has such enthusiasm when teaching that it’s contagious! She engages every student and makes them feel special. She inspires me to be a better teacher. We are so lucky to have her join our Rodgers team this year!"
There's so many more classrooms filled with staff volunteers that got doused with pie, slime, and color. Our staff would do anything--and we do mean anything--for those smiles.
Thank you Ms. Morgan for being a real life version of Joy from Inside Out for your kids!
National I.T. Professionals Day
In recognition of National I.T. Professionals Day, we are celebrating our technology staff.
Our support team leads teachers in implementing technology through coaching, demonstrations, and professional development. They serve as our help desk for our technology infrastructure, helping both staff and community with our digital learning platforms.
Bryan Huyghe has been serving with our Technology Department at Lake Shore for just under 5 years. His degree in Computer Networking led him to enjoy the tech field. His hobbies include PC and tabletop gaming and woodworking. He said, "My wife and I chose to enroll our three children here as school of choice students because of the general vibe of LSPS." Tori, Stephanie, and Donovan graduated LSHS in '18, '21, and '22 and are proud to be a part of the Shorian Nation. Our entire technology support team resolves issues in a timely manner with friendly customer service.
Thank you Nicole Dombro, Gabriel Cerrasco, Taylor Brosnan, Debbie Krumholz, Bryan Huyghe, Josiah Toma, and Laurie Cataldo for being reliable, dependable, and able to handle our tech needs.
