Newsletter 2 Term 4
Onerahi School Friday 17 November
Te Karere o te Tumuaki/Principal's Message
Kia Ora e Te Whānau,
I have loved hearing the shrieks, gasps and splashing of the tamariki in the pool. Along with senior athletics it tells me summer is on the way. Classes are taking the learning outside, enjoying our wide variety of learning spaces around the school. They are also venturing out into the wider community with a range of experiences - surfing, snorkelling, beach going, and bush walking. We live in the perfect place for that.
You have probably seen the new mural out the front taking shape, keep an eye on things as there is a lot more to come.
It is not long until the day of our final assembly, if you can join us on Friday the 15th, we would love to see as many of you as possible. It is a great day of celebration, acknowledgment and farewells.
As always thank you for the contributions you make as whānau to your child's journey at Onerahi Primary School. We appreciate your support.
Ngā mihi nui

Year 4 Sailing Adventures
For four weeks a group of year 4 students have been given an opportunity to do sailing. When the bell went, the kids that were chosen gathered all their belongings and walked to the library. There they would take a quick roll to see if everybody was there. After that we were driven by our lovely parent helpers and with our car groups. When the group of kids got there they changed into their togs ready to start sailing.
Then we were separated into two groups. One group started in the little sailing boats and the other group started in the Quest and then we swapped over.
Some of us were nervous and some of us played bumper boats. We overcame our fears and luckily nobody fell out of the sailing boats. We had so much fun that some of us didn't want to go back to school. Learning to sail has been a great learning experience that we will remember for a life time.

Kaupapa Class Kaimoana Gatherers
The Kaupapa class learned some great life skills when they journeyed off on a fishing trip in Week 5. Here is an account of the afternoon by two of lucky participants.
We headed off down to the wharf at Onerahi in cars belonging to Matua Matt, Matua Kyle and our caretaker Edwin. Although the wind picked up during the time we were out, it was a good experience for those people who had not been fishing before. Those of us who had, enjoyed teaching the others how to bait, cast and reel fish in. We did manage to catch one yellowtail and a baby snapper. We also met two more keen fisherman on the wharf. Added to that we explored the foreshore and found red pumice and some old fish bones. It was a pretty awesome afternoon. By Lucas Perry, and Joel Mann.
Kokonga o Kirsty/Kirsty's Corner
What a wonderful time of the year it is. The sun is shining (most of the time), the pool is open and the library is a hive of happy activity. It's lovely to see students utilising the space before school as well as at break times.
As we head to the end of the year we also head towards stock take. Can you please have a hunt under beds, down the backs of chairs and in all the other nooks and crannies library books like to hide. All books need to be returned by the 1st of December.
The Library will reopen after stock take so everyone can grab some books for holiday reading.

ROAD SAFETY /HAUMARU RORI - IMPORTANT.
We kindly ask all parents bringing their children to school who cross Church St to support us modelling safe behaviour for our tamariki by ensuring they are crossing this road at the dedicated crossing. We appreciate taking the extra steps required at times, to take advantage of safely stopped traffic.
It is also very important that if you are collecting your child from our Church St entrance you do not park on the yellow lines or across driveways. Our staff parking area is also out of bounds.
Lets all work together to keep our tamariki safe on their way to and from our kura.

SPRING
A reminder to you all that in Term 4 hats are compulsory for all outdoor activities at Onerahi Primary. This includes outdoor PE activities during lesson time. This is in keeping with our efforts to be sun safe. As spring can mean weather that's a wee bit fickle, we do still recommend having rain jackets in bags and a change of clothes, just in case. We are all looking forward to enjoying the warm sun in the weeks to come.
