Talking Goals & GRIT!
Grit is working hard, persevering and never giving up! We all need grit to get through life. Angela Duckworth and her team from the University of Pennsylvania are working on clever strategies to help students learn to work hard and adapt in the face of temptation, distraction and defeat. When Angela was asked why she studies perseverance, she said, "Why? Because life is hard. Because there are just obstacles every day in everything that we want to do. If it were easy, it would be done already, and I think that goes for any work that's worthwhile." In other words, children need to be taught to appreciate that it is normal to struggle when working hard on a challenge that exceeds their skills. It is normal to feel confused. Frustration is probably a sign that they're on the right track and to gut it out through natural human aversion to mental effort and feeling overwhelmed. Think of the story "Little Engine That Could." When it got hard, he never gave up and continued to tell himself. "I think I can!" Teachers are here to assist your children when they struggle and encourage them to keep working to accomplish their goals. In addition, they teach students the process of working through the tough work and never give up. Down below are the goals we worked towards in our first quarter along with all our new goals for quarter 2!
We've got the Golden Ticket... We've got the Golden Ticket.....
Willy Wonka aka Mrs. Guiterrez had Wonka Bars delivered to each student on Halloween. These students and staff members were the winners of the GOLDEN TICKETS!
Miss Newton & Miss K having Halloween math fun with their kiddos!
Mrs. Helminski's class partaking in a VERY cool experiment! 🎃
We read the book Pumpkin Jack about a little boy who loved his jack-o-lantern and didn't want to throw it away. He put it in the garden and watched as it began to rot then turned into a pile of seeds. When spring came around, he noticed a sprout where the seeds had been. He took care of the sprout and watched as it grew into a vine and produced pumpkins. We set up a 'garden' and put a jack-o-lantern in to watch the process. We hope to have sprouts in the spring!
Friendship Day is coming up!
Look to your child's teacher for more info on Friendship Day. This is an awesome opportunity for you to be able to volunteer your time to help out with this celebration. Each class will need 6-7 parent volunteers, so if you would like to try to volunteer- make sure you come up to the school and get your ID scanned for your background check no later than November 10th to be approved to help with this fun event.
Check Out Our STATE Recognized Brickies from the Start Program!
The School City of Hobart Building Brickies' goal is to strengthen families by empowering parents as their child’s first and best teachers. Every day, we advocate for families so every child-in every neighborhood-can thrive.
Please update emergency clothes in your child's backpack!
It’s that time of year where the weather is changing. Remember those bags of emergency clothes in your child’s backpack? Please swap out the summer clothes for fall clothing. Please also make sure your child’s emergency bag has socks and underwear in it. If your child doesn’t have a bag in their backpack- please make them one!!! One outfit, one pair of socks, and one pair of underwear. This is for any emergency your child may encounter here at school, not just bathroom accidents. You never know when they may slip in mud or chocolate milk will attack at lunch!!
OH NO!!! YOUR LITTLE BRICKIE ISN'T FEELING WELL?
If your child isn't feeling well, please keep him or her at home. You must report the absence IN SKYWARD before 10:00AM. There is no need to call the school to let us know. If there are any questions about the absence, we will reach out to you.
