Students of the Month:
Counselors Corner:
Welcome to December and the Holiday Season!
This month our SEL (social-emotional learning) focus is on HONESTY. This trait encompasses not only being honest with adults and peers, but also teaching students the importance of being honest with themselves. Developing self-honesty can occur through:
* Journaling
* Goal setting
*Mindful meditations guided by Youtube Videos
* Weekly reflection with a parent or other trusted adult
Classroom Counseling Lessons Grades PK-K
Our students will be learning about honesty through Howard B Wigglebottom. Click the link to review this book with your students at home!
Grades 1-5
Last week, students in Grades 2-5 wrapped up Friendship Skills Curriculums with Naudia, our school liaison from CVIC (Community Violence Education Center).
This month we will extend our learning from CVIC by applying honesty to our communication with friends and parents. Students will learn 3 styles of communication: passive, aggressive, and assertive. Students will have opportunities to role play the use of assertive communication to strengthen honesty and reduce conflict in relationships.
Students will come home with a "Bug and a Wish" communication stems to practice!
Grades 6-8
Middle school students will learn 3 styles of communication: passive, aggressive, and assertive. Students will have opportunities to role play the use of assertive communication to strengthen honesty and reduce conflict in relationships.
Students will do some honest self-exploration of their circles of control and influence.
Looking ahead!
Starting in the 2024 New Year, all students will receive weekly counseling lessons based on the "Be Good People" curriculum. This curriculum was created by our Minnesota neighbors during the pandemic, and has wonderful resources for use in school AND home. Please click on the link to explore!
Preparation for the Holiday Break
The holiday season can bring out a variety of emotions for people...and some of these emotions may be unexpected. If you are looking for ways to encourage and keep your family connected over the holiday break, check out this great toolkit from one of North Dakota's regional education associations! Family Tool Kit for Holiday Display
Please reach out any time! I am at the school Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays and would love to connect.
Ms. Weston
Congratulations to Mrs. Tunseth and the MS Choir on a great display of music at the Ecumenical Service last week!

Bus students:
All students who ride a bus to school must have coats, caps, mittens/gloves, and appropriate shoes/boots. This is a safety issue now that the weather is getting cold. Although the buses are warmed and ready when students board them, the cool down quickly when doors open, and if a bus should ever stall, we want the students to remain safe and comfortable.
