KINDERGARTEN NEWS
Dear Parents,
December will be a short, but very busy, and fun-filled month in Kindergarten. In reading, we will use different versions of the traditional Gingerbread Man to learn about comparing and contrasting, sequencing, and retelling. We will also tie in other language arts and math activities to accompany the story. The focus in math this month will be adding and subtracting numbers within 10. In Social Studies, our Kindergartners will explore some winter holidays celebrated around the world. We will take a closer look at the celebrations and traditions of Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Las Posadas, and Christmas. The students will travel with a holiday passport to each celebration and enjoy a brief history and craft.
If the children have any free time during the winter break, it would be beneficial for them to continue practicing their sight words, reading, and counting to 100. Wishing you all a very happy holiday!

FIRST GRADE NEWS
Hello First Grade Parents,
During Leader in Me, we have been reviewing the habits. The students have been working on helping others and synergizing.
During reading we will continue to work on important skills such as: story structure, who is telling the story, comparing, and contrasting, retelling and more. Be sure to listen to your child retell a previously read story.
The students have been doing a tremendous job with I-Ready! We will continue to work to meet our school goal of 45 minutes a week and at least 80% pass rate.
In math we have been working with addition and subtraction to solve problems. The students are using information to find totals and unknown addends. We are discovering how addition and subtraction are related to each other. Building math fact fluency is something that we are working to improve. Math fluency will prepare the children for the steps to come in math. We have been identifying and analyzing two- and three-dimensional figures. Now we will start by adding real world problems.
Thank you for your support.

SECOND GRADE NEWS
Dear Parents,
As the month of December arrives and the holiday season is upon us, we want to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt appreciation to our students, families, administrators, fellow teachers, and staff. We want to say a big THANK YOU for your unwavering support of our school and parents for being our partners in education. The way everyone came together after the recent Thanksgiving Balloon Parade showed us once again how special our school and our town truly are. We are proud to call this place our home!
As we continue our learning journey into the holiday season, our students will be exploring the joy of giving and the importance of kindness. We will be focusing on how people can resolve conflicts and work out disagreements in a peaceful and respectful manner. These lessons are not only valuable in the classroom but also in our everyday lives. During the second half of these nine weeks, students will continue to learn phonics skills such as vowel-consonant -e, closed syllables, double final consonants, and multi-syllables words. Students will continue to identify rhyme schemes in poems, use texts such as If The Shoe Fits to build comprehension skills, identify the central idea, story structure, relevant details, identifying, and explaining the theme, and retelling a text to enhance comprehension. In math, second grade students will subtract within 10 with automaticity; and subtract two numbers with sums from 11 to 20 with procedural reliability. They will use number relationships to develop subtraction strategies within one hundred. Additionally, students will use these skills to solve two-step problems with comparison. In Science, students will be able to understand what it takes to change the motion of objects and we will explore the composition and structure of the surface of earth.
We hope that this holiday season brings you joy, love, and peace. May it be filled with laughter, warmth, and cherished moments with your loved ones. Thank you again for your continued support, and we look forward to a wonderful holiday season together!
Warmest wishes,
Your Second Grade Teachers
THIRD GRADE NEWS
Dear Parents,
Our third-grade students have learned so much in quarter 2!
The students will continue to use their math facts to solve word problems. Our multiplication number chants continue to be the foundation for learning multiplication and division. Please encourage your child to continue practicing and saying them at home. They have been introduced to many strategies that will help them solve both multiplication and division problems.
In Reading, our students learned why some stories are better told as plays. They focused on identifying an author’s claim, summarizing text, and explaining theme and how it develops in a story. In Writing, students wrote a narrative about a character who helped someone. In Science, we learned about properties of matter. The students had a great time exploring, measuring, and comparing liquids and solids mass, temperature, and volume. In Social Studies, we learned about types of maps, continents, oceans, and the purpose of maps and map elements.
Please continue to read with your child every night and practice their multiplication math facts with skip counting. We appreciate your support and all that you do for our students!

FOURTH GRADE
Hello Fourth Grade Families:
We hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving break. We are now in the home stretch for Christmas vacation! We will be finishing Quarter 2 upon our return from the Holiday Break. We had another exciting and successful meeting with our Leader Clubs last month and the students, and teachers, are really enjoying themselves. We have continued with learning our reading standards and finished our novel study of Where the Red Fern Grows. Your students have been working hard with summarizing, theme, point of view and vocabulary using context clues just to mention a few. Please remember that your child should be reading at home every night and be able to summarize what they have read. Students truly enjoyed the 4th Grade Turkey Challenge for iReady accuracy. In writing we have continued to work on the expository writing process. Math has really taken off with multiplication of larger numbers and learning long divisions. December brings us into learning addition and subtraction of fractions and fractions greater than one. I am sure you have seen the many different strategies that our students are using to solve these problems, it is fantastic to watch them find their strategy and master it.
This month has also been packed full of adventure for your students. In Social Studies we have been learning about the explorers that first came to Florida and the first colonies that were set up. While in Science we have examined and analyzed seasonal change and adaptations along with animal food chains. Students are excited to continue learning about rocks and minerals and start our unit on weathering and erosion. Last month November has had us focusing on Habit 3: Putting first things first. Remember to talk to your students about the importance of setting priorities. We have been looking at ways that keep us disciplined and organized. While doing this, students have been working on setting priorities, making schedules, and following their plans to the best of their ability. We have truly seen a difference here at school and we are confident you have seen the same thing at home. December brings us to Habit 4: Think, Win, Win. Ask your students about the importance of this habit.
In closing, please remember the importance of your child being at school daily. Make up work cannot replace an entire day’s worth of learning. Please contact your child’s teacher at any time should you have any questions or concerns, and as always, thank you for your support. We are so fortunate to have such a supportive community.
The Fourth Grade Team.
FIFTH GRADE NEWS
Dear Parents,
Fifth grade students are hard at work as we head into the holiday season. In science, we are finishing with weather and moving on to Climate zones and biomes when we return. In math, we just finished multiplying multi-digit whole numbers (6 digits by two digits) and decimals. Recently, we have been working on division of multi-digit whole numbers. The biggest challenge is interpreting the story problems to answer the questions. When we get back, we will be working on the division of multi-digit decimals! They have been doing a great job! In reading, we have been reading engaging stories that require students to make inferences to support comprehension. We worked hard to help students to explain how the setting, events, conflict, and character development contribute to the plot in a literary text. Most recently, we were practicing explaining the development of stated or implied themes throughout a literary text. When we get back from Thanksgiving break, we will take our 2nd iReady test and the F.A.S.T. test for math and reading. We have exciting plans to reward the students for their hard work on these assessments!

ARTISTS STROKES
Students have been having a fantastic time learning about and creating art!
In Kindergarten, we created portraits of the Statue of Liberty and used our imaginations to dress up our turkeys to look like a different animal so the farmer couldn’t find us:
First Grade, we created portraits of the Statue of Liberty and used our imaginations to hide our turkeys somewhere the farmer wouldn’t be able to find them:

INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCE (IR) CLASSES
Dear Parents,
Technology Classes – Grs. K-4
🎵 C-O-D-I-N-G! 🎵 I am a Robot! 🤖 If your primary student comes home singing one of these great songs, it is because they are learning to code, or program, a robot. Each primary grade level has a coding robot to practice computational thinking, problem solving, collaboration and cooperation. Kindergarten codes Blue Bot robot, a floor device that has its commands, or codes, buttons right on the top of it to help with the 1 to 1 correspondence between 1 command = 1 action. First grade codes Dash Robot, a floor robot that connects via Bluetooth to an iPad for the Wonder App, which contains visual blocks of code students connect. Second grade codes OzoBot Evo robots, which are small table-top robots, who follow color codes drawn on paper by students.
Entrepreneurship Classes – Gr5
It may sound a little like Santa’s ⛏Workshop⚒ as you pass my classroom because my Fifth-Grade entrepreneurs are 🛠building🧱 their prototypes for their Team Product. Also, teams are putting the finishing touches their MS PowerPoint presentation about their Product. Each team member created a slide to combine as a team presentation project. Teams will use their prototypes and presentations as they present their product to our TBE 🦈Shark Tank 🦈, aka Mrs. Ledbetter, Mrs. Riashi, and Mrs. Skudnig in January.

MUSICAL NOTES
Holiday Happiness…’Tis the Season… and Ho, Ho, Ho!!! All sounds seem to focus on celebration this month. We uncover the traditions of cultures around the world and focus on performance and fun. Our Kindergarten, First, and Second Graders are creating a Holiday Spectacular while our Third, Fourth, and Fifth Graders are concentrating on musical heritage and the development of a variety of styles. It is time to be Merry and Bright!!! There are wonderful community opportunities for families to join in and be a part of the festivities… Get out there and CELEBRATE!!!

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
In PE class our students continue to practice their rolling, throwing, and catching skills and will begin dribbling with our hands and feet later this month. Our 3rd thru 5th grade students are using those skill sets and applying offensive and defensive strategies. While we continue to practice and apply different skill sets, students continue to work on cooperating with their peers and appropriate ways to resolve problems when they occur. Additionally, this month we will have our Field Day on Friday, December 15th. We are excited to sharpen the saw as the entire school will rotate through 6 different events. It is a great way to celebrate together before we take off for winter break.

Shout out to all our students and families who joined us in the CCPS 5K race this year! This was a great experience for some of our students experiencing a road race for their first time, and a great opportunity for our families to sharpen the saw together!
MEDIA NEWS
Reading Counts updates, first through fifth graders have read words 31,612,820 so far this year. Students in grades 1-5 have taken and passed 4,366 tests on Reading Count Books. Fourth grade students are in the lead with the most points earned this year, they have earned 6674 points this year! This is an average of 94 points per student!
Kindergarten enjoyed many Fall read aloud stories including a new title this year Pumpkin Jack, by Will Hubbell. This book tells of the life cycle of a pumpkin. As a follow up, we have our own Pumpkin Jack in the media center. As it is with doing things the first time we have run into some challenges. Poor Jack is too big to fit into our container! (If anyone has a large jar or small aquarium, they would like to donate to the media center we would be grateful!) So, while we waited for Jack to rot enough for us to squeeze him into our too small container, the seeds inside of him had already sprouted! We will continue to watch and share how Jack is doing!
These are some of the new books purchased because of our book fair! They are being processed and will be available for check out soon! Thank you again for shopping and supporting our book fair!
COUNSELOR'S CORNER
One of the life skills that builds confidence, supports mental and emotional health, and enables children to overcome challenges is conflict resolution. Some of the common causes of conflict include; differing values, differing needs for control and trying to impose one’s beliefs, a desire for different outcomes, unrealistic expectations, an inability to tolerate and accept differences, and faulty communication. Conflict can be made worse when children don’t know the steps to resolve it.
1. Calm Down
It is impossible to talk out a problem when you are angry
2. Find Out the Problem from All Sides
Pick a good time and place to talk and listen
3. Attack the Problem, Not the Person
Use “I Messages” – “I feel angry when you take my markers. Please ask.”
4. Make a Win/Win Plan and Stick to it
Consider every possible solution and consequence.
