Around the School Spotlight
This week was staff appreciation week and our staff was certainly celebrated! Our teachers do tremendous work with the students in their classrooms every single day and are a huge part in making Hawks View such a special community. In this newsletter, I want to take the opportunity to highlight staff members whose roles are an integral part of our community but oftentimes, their work is less visible to our families. From bus rides, to meals, to keeping our building clean & safe, to supporting our students with behavioral and academic needs, our staff is truly the best!
HV Leadership Team & Office Team
This is a cohesive group who shares a common vision of making Hawks View a school where kids feel safe, loved and valued. We hope to be friendly faces in the front office and a place where families feel welcome. We are honored to lead the Hawks View community and believe this is a very special place to learn and grow!
Media Center Educational Coordinator
The library is a place for all students to foster their love of reading. Weekly lessons introduce different genres to students to help pique their interests. Students also learn how to navigate the library by finding their own books, using search stations and understanding the importance of Call #'s. Students just wrapped up a lesson on the Caldecott Medal. In the weeks to come, they will learn about other book awards handed out each year. They participated in the Patricia Gallagher Book Award contest this year. All of the nominees were shared with students and they voted for their favorite book. They are eagerly waiting for the official winner to be announced in May!
Thanks to our successful book fair in the fall, we have been able to add Wonderbooks and Shine-a-Light books to our library, along with many more. Our fall fair sales were the largest the school has ever had! Mrs. Lowe works hard to ensure that Hawks View truly has books for everyone.
"There are many little ways to enlarge your child's world. Love of books is the best of all” Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis
Instructional Assistants
We are grateful to have such an exceptional group of instructional assistants. Their dedication and tireless support, whether it's supervising recess and lunch duties, serving as a crossing guard, leading intervention groups, or supporting classroom academics, their work at Hawks
View is truly invaluable.
Nutrition Services Department
This team strives to provide good and nutritious meals that are enjoyable. They try to have a variety each month so the students can experience different kinds of food. This year, they have added farm to table vegetables in our salad bar! They love making and serving meals to all students and seeing/hearing about all the meals that they serve, especially when kids try something new!
Pre-Kindergarten
Our PreK class is led by Mrs. Carver with the support of a wonderful instructional assistant, Mrs. Fisher. They focus a lot on social emotional skills and friendship skills. This includes how to work together in a group and identifying/expressing feelings in an appropriate way. Academically, they work on a letter of the week through sensory activities, fine motor practice and movement activities related to that letter. Students play math games related to sorting, writing numbers, patterns, recognizing numbers and working with a partner. A benefit of our PreK program at Hawks View is that they get to participate in STEM, PE, music and library as well as get to know the kindergarten teachers and school staff to help with the transition to kindergarten the following year. We love having our littlest learners on campus!
Special Programs
The Special Education resource team at Hawks View Elementary currently serves over 60 eligible students in the areas of functional/life skills, math, reading, and writing. Part of this team includes 2 Learning Specialists and 7 Instructional Assistants, who are able to adapt, flex, and respond throughout the day. Services are provided to students in the classroom, one on one, or in small groups. Our School Psychologist uses her skills in mental health, learning, and behavior to help kids succeed in all aspects of school life. Our Speech and Language Service providers support students who demonstrate barriers to communicating or understanding language at school. Services may be provided in small groups or through consultation and collaboration with school staff. Activities are based on educational goals, are interactive, visually supported, and sensory-based. Our team is like a family, looking out for each other and the children we are entrusted with!
English Language Development
Integrated English Language Development incorporates the Scottish Storyline teaching approach with both the English Language Arts and English Language Proficiency Standards, focusing on Speaking, Listening, Writing and Reading. The Storyline Approach uses carefully designed questions and activities to build and further develop their knowledge and skills. This Fall, students studied Space Travel. Students became travel agents and were tasked with writing a brochure. They learned about what to pack, how to travel there, accommodations on the ship, eating in space, and what to see. In the photos below, teams created rockets after learning about the different parts of rockets. Once each team finished their rocket, they gave speeches on why they liked a specific rocket using the vocabulary they learned.

Custodial Staff and Bus Drivers
It’s hard to put into words how much this team helps with the day to day operations of our school and how much we appreciate all they do! In addition to their daily custodial jobs, they respond promptly to radio calls and anything thrown their way. They are professional, hard working, reliable and incredible team-players. We are so grateful for all they do for Hawks View!
