MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Atkinson Families,
Thank you for everyone's participation in our earthquake drill this week. Students did a great job with both the earthquake drill and the subsequent evacuation. Our next drill in November will be Secure the Perimeter. This drill is activated when there is an unsafe situation outside the school building. Designated personnel are assigned to secure all exterior doors, but inside the building remains business as usual. Anyone who is outside will come inside and everyone will stay inside until the situation is resolved.
We hope to see you this afternoon at the Harvest Festival from 3-5 p.m.!
Debbie Armendariz
Atkinson Elementary School Principal
HALLOWEEN
Halloween does fall on a school day this year, but we want to remind you it is not a holiday we celebrate at school. Over the years, we have found the costumes and candy associated with Halloween lead to too many disruptions to the learning day. We ask that students not wear costumes to school and that Halloween candy only come to school as a small treat to be eaten after a student's lunch.
LEARNING DIVERSITY NIGHT
Next week, we have our Learning Diversity Night on Tuesday, October 24, which will be split into two sections: ESL information from 5:30–6:15 p.m. and TAG information from 6:15–7 p.m. Learn about how students enter and exit these programs as well as the services they can access while they are in these programs. This will be a virtual event, here are the links:
- ESL 5:30–6:15 p.m.: meet.google.com/qsu-ndvy-uhm
- TAG 6:15–7 p.m.: meet.google.com/hey-foqx-act
HEARING EVALUATION FOLLOW-UP
We will have a hearing evaluation follow-up at our school on Tuesday, November 14. Students that will be evaluated are Kindergarten and 1st grade students who were absent for or did not pass the first screening on October 6 (and sometimes, older students who missed the screening in prior years). If there are other students whom staff or parents have hearing concerns about, we have an opportunity to evaluate them as well if we receive a Hearing Request form, garnering parent permission and faxed to MESD prior to the follow-up test date. If you would like to have your student evaluated, please contact our student health assistant, Vanisha Singh, at vsingh@pps.net.
PTA FUNDRAISER
The PTA’s fundraising campaign is concluding this weekend, but they still need your donation. Please give today! In addition to supporting the classrooms, the PTA organizes teacher appreciation events, multicultural community building events, as well as enriching events for the students such as the talent show and the basketball league. None of this is possible without your contributions!
