Dear Hiteon Families,

It has been a school year that none of us have experienced before, and as a community, it has made us stronger. Sheltering in place for three months and continuing to learn remotely has had its challenges for students, families, and staff. We have been tested in so many ways that were unimaginable just a few months ago. However, through all the trials and tribulations that have occurred, the fabric that makes Hiteon such a close-knit community has become stronger.

It is bittersweet to say farewell for the summer this year, not knowing when we will all be together at Hiteon learning and laughing together. We wish all of you a safe and healthy summer break and look forward to being together soon.

Traci Chelf - Fourth-Grade Teacher - Retiring

Mrs. Chelf began her teaching career fifteen years ago after a career in Sales and Marketing. It was her dream to become an educator, and she started her career in the Tigard-Tualatin School District. She then began teaching for Beaverton School District first at Nancy Ryles for seven years and then Hiteon for ten years. Mrs. Chelf has taught all grades (K-5) and has filled many roles, including Library/Media Specialist, PYP Coordinator, Intervention teacher, and TAG facilitator, but her favorite role has been as a classroom teacher! Mrs. Chelf's calm and caring presence will be missed by all. We wish her all the best!

Traci Chelf’s message to the community:

I am grateful for the relationships that I have developed with the students, families, and staff. Thank you for your support and your friendship. During retirement, I plan to spend time with my family in Colorado and California, and with my new grand-daughter arriving later this month! You will also find me on the golf course or as a substitute teacher in the halls of Hiteon!

Tom Steiwer - Fifth-Grade Teacher - Retiring

Mr. Steiwer has been a Hiteon teacher for 33 years! He has become an institution within an institution. His presence in the building and his ability to create strong relationships with students, families, and staff will be missed by all. We wish him all the best in the next chapter of his life.

To the Greater Hiteon Community,

It is with a bittersweet joy that I am announcing my retirement from teaching this spring. It has been a true pleasure and honor to have taught at Hiteon since 1987. I have had the fantastic opportunity to see former students go on to become accomplished adults, not just young adults, but full-on adults. I have taught 2 generations of families and feel fortunate that the community trusted me with their children.

It is on a daily basis that I am reminded of how great the Hiteon Community is. Not a day goes by when I did not realize how fortunate I was to be working at Hiteon. The teachers I worked with were amazing, compassionate, and passionate. For that, I am thankful. The students were just as wonderful, full of curiosity, eagerness, and kindness for others. Wherever I go, I will always carry so many fond and wonderful memories of my time at Hiteon!

Emily Jeremiah - Third-Grade Teacher - Time with family

Mrs. Jeremiah started her teaching career at Hiteon in 2011 and left us after one year. During her time away, she taught in Seattle for three years. Hiteon was fortunate enough to have her return in 2015. During the past five years, she has taught 1st, 3rd, and 4th grade. Her child-centered teaching and positive spirit will be missed.

I am so lucky to have been able to call Hiteon my home for the past five years. I will never forget the students, families, and colleagues I have had the honor to know. Thank you so much for all of the support. I will miss you all!

Also, we want to recognize and say goodbye to Emma Kimball, a long-term sub in third-grade and MacKenzie Beber long-term sub in third-grade. They both did a fantastic job teaching our students and becoming a part of the Hiteon Community. We wish them all the best!

It is important that you inform us if your student will not be returning to Hiteon for the 2020-2021 school year.

Once she received a "Request for Records" form from the new school, she will forward your student's school file to the new school.

Any students that are not returning to Hiteon for the 2020-2021 school year and were issued any type of BSD devices can return them to Hiteon Elementary:

Monday June 15th through Friday June 19th between 9am-10am

There will be a reception area for the device(s) in front of the school. It will not be curbside service so parents will need to park.

Again, This is only for students NOT returning to Hiteon next fall, otherwise all returning students will hold onto their BSD device over the summer.

It is important to protect District Chromebooks that are an indispensable tool for students to conduct distance learning.

It is each student/famiy's responsibility to protect District property in their possession, and it is important to remind everyone of the importance of taking care to protect these valuable assets with the following reminders:

• Never leave a laptop or laptop bag in sight in a parked car. Ideally, these should remain with the staff member, or at very least, locked in the trunk.

• Never leave a laptop unattended when using it in a public setting.

• Never place drinks or liquids in an area that could result in them being spilled and damaging the electronics.

It is also important to remember that should a laptop be lost, stolen or damaged while at a student's home, care and/or control it is their personal responsibility for its repair or replacement.

The Beaverton School District is well aware that the ability to access learning will look very differently for students. While learning remotely for some will be an easy reach. For some grade levels, the learning will first be about the technology and then the lessons themselves.

During this time, teachers continue to reach out and provide students with whole group and small group instruction. While engaging with students, we acknowledge assessing students would look very different from classroom to classroom and child to child. While some students will adapt quickly and thrive, others may be uncomfortable sharing their knowledge and understanding in this format.

To help relieve the pressure on students, families and teachers, the District is implementing a more standardized grading approach at the elementary level for the second semester. The intent of the report card is to provide information about a child’s engagement and participation during this closure.

When you receive the elementary report card this year you will see the changes described below.

School closure was ordered by Governor Brown in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Academic Progress is marked with an X as teachers do not have adequate summative assessment data for students. Comments in Reading, Writing, and Math reflect the participation and engagement of students during the period of Remote Learning. Paper packets which mirrored the learning of the Remote Learning classrooms were given to some students. During this closure, the social emotional health of a child was our number one priority.

In the areas of Reading, Writing and Math, teachers will include a comment that reflects the students participation and engagement during this time. Report card comments will also reflect a goal for moving forward. PE and Music specialists will also be including information about the concepts and skills instructed during the period of Remote Learning.

Thank you for partnering with us to help educate your child. We acknowledge that these are challenging times and that we are learning together. Thank you for allowing our teachers into your home each day. If you need assistance, we encourage you to reach out to your child’s teacher for support. Report cards will be available on ParentVue on Tuesday, June 16th.

Since the closing of schools in early March, all staff and District resources have been significantly impacted. The District has posted several “No Trespassing” signs to inform and encourage the surrounding community members to support our efforts of maintaining safe schools and properties.

Many other efforts have been made by the District staff to help, including assigning campus monitors to patrol the sites. Unfortunately, however, there is still an increase in criminal activity in and around our campuses.

Although we have security officers patrolling our schools, we strongly believe it takes a community effort to ensure the safety and security of our community and schools. The Beaverton School District is reaching out to you, our community, if you see any suspicious or illegal activity in or around our school district campuses, please not hesitate to call our local Police non-emergency number at (503)629-0111 or if during the day, our Beaverton School District Public safety Department at (503)356-4444.

Coming soon! We will be sending out invites for Coffee Chat’s once we have clarity around what school will look like next year. We want to provide you with the most current information about what school will look like going forward. We also want to hear from our parents and community to listen to your perspectives about returning to school in the fall.

If your student is currently at Hiteon on an Administrative Student Transfers, remember that you need to fill out a new request for the 2020-2021 school year. Administrative Student Transfers are approved for one school year only and are not guaranteed from year to year.

Contact your neighborhood school if you have questions about Administrative Student Transfers and to initiate the necessary paperwork for the 2020-2021 school year.

Administrative Student Transfer forms should be submitted to the student's resident school. The resident school is the neighborhood school at which the student is assigned by the District's attendance plan (Policy JEA-AR).

You will be contacted by your resident school if the transfer request was approved or denied. Once a decision is made on either the approval or denial, the decision is final and there is NO appeal.

With the unprecedented public health crisis posed by COVID-19, ALL volunteer activities have been suspended until further notice. However, it is important to remember that these challenging times will end and volunteer activities will resume.

Here are a few important steps volunteers can take now to be ready to go when the suspension on volunteer activities is lifted.

Username & Password:

As a reminder, volunteers are required to sign in and sign out through the volunteer computer station located in the school front office. To do this, they need the username and password they created for the Volunteer and Background Check Application process.

• To retrieve, or reset either of these, go to myimpactpage.com and click on the “Forgot Username or Password” link. The username and a temporary password will be emailed to them.
• With this information, login again to myimpactpage.com and you will be prompted to create a new permanent password. Passwords need to be a minimum of 8 characters, with at least one upper and one lower case letter and at least one number.

New locations for the 2020/2021 school year?

Volunteers should send an email to update_volunteer_locations@beaverton.k12.or.us if they would like to update their school preference for 20/21, or if they are no longer volunteering.

They should include:

Name of school(s) to add

Name of school(s) to remove

Remove all schools and Archive from system

Volunteers are, and will continue to be, an important part of the WE in the District’s goal: WE empower all students to achieve post-high school success.

SUMMER READING PROGRAM:

All kids from birth to grade five can read 15 hours of to be a part of the Beaverton City Library's Kids Summer Reading program to read and earn a free book!

• Participate: Beginning June 1, 2020 you can Print a reading log or make your own. Starting this summer there is no need to sign up!
• Read, Listen, Learn: Read or be read to for 15 hours, participate in library events, and try the activities on your reading log! Keep track of what you do by coloring in the shapes in your Reading Log for every 30 minutes you spend reading, listening, or doing a family activity.
• Visit to the library: Bring your completed Reading Log to the library to collect your free book! Stay tuned for how we will get your book to you safely.

WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR BOOKS & VIDEOS:

Does your family have Washington County/ Beaverton Public library books and movies that you are done with? You can return them; ONLY the drive up book return at the downtown Beaverton City Library is open for returns. It is the library next to the city park with the splash pad. If you are still using the books, keep them. The library is not charging any late fees during this closure.
