Hopkins FFA Chapter Receives High Honors at State Convention
At the Michigan FFA State Convention held at Michigan State University March 8-10, the Hopkins FFA Chapter was named the Top Chapter in the state of MI through the National Chapter Award Program. Hopkins was named in the top 3 chapters after submitting their award application this winter. Gracie Langlois and Emma Langlois then represented the chapter while at convention by presenting our chapter highlights in the presentation portion of the contest and earned Hopkins top honors. This is the second year in a row Hopkins has received this title. In addition, 16 members received state recognition while at convention.
Hopkins qualified in five state leadership contests by placing either first or second at the district and regional level in February. Out of 18 students competing at the district level, 13 advanced to regionals, and 9 qualified for state. Kaden Petroshus was named the State Runner Up in Extemporaneous Public Speaking. In this contest, he drew a question related to his topic area, Agriscience and Technology, upon arriving and had 30 minutes to write his speech and present it. Olivia Belden was named the State Runner Up in Greenhand Public Speaking with her speech on horse rescue titled, “From Kill Pen to Companion.” Chase Laarman also competed in the Greenhand Public Contest and received a silver medal with his speech on “Climate Change’s Effect on Small Peach Producers.” Ellise Wedge received a gold medal in the Creed Speaking Contest. Finally, Emilie Coffey, Leah Ellis, Tally Laarman, Carson Schricker, and Colby Tucker received a silver medal in Agricultural Issues with their presentation on “Can Cultured Meat Compete with Conventional Meat Production?”
Several members were recognized with a state level award based on their academics and FFA involvement. Paisley Dorman, Tally Laarman, and Baleigh Schricker received their Outstanding Junior award based on their Supervised Agricultural Experience project, FFA involvement, and academics. Emilie Coffey, Leah Ellis, Gracie Langlois, and Carson Schricker all received their State FFA Degrees. This is the highest degree bestowed upon an FFA member at the state level based on income earned from their Supervised Agricultural Experience project outside of class, FFA involvement above the chapter level, and academics. In addition, Gracie Langlois was named the state winner in Veterinary Science for her skills learned through her Supervised Agricultural Experience placement at Town and Country Veterinary Hospital in Allegan, MI.
Three members had the opportunity to showcase their musical talents on the main stage in front of over 1,000 people. Addison Moored participated in the state band while Baleigh Schricker, and Carson Schricker sang in the state choir.
The FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education. The Michigan FFA Association operates as a state affiliate under the federally chartered National FFA Organization.

Do you know the 3 main areas School Counselors work with students are …
Academic - talk about any academic concerns, study plans, organizational skills, academic plans, Tech Center, AP classes, and more.
Personal/Social - concerns with friendships, family, other interpersonal concerns, anxiety, stress, coping skills and more
Career/College - deciding after high school plans and what to do when students are in high school to make those plans happen. Will a student go to trade school? 2 or 4 year college? Military? Apprenticeship? Other?
We meet with students during individual appointments, by conducting small groups, and when visiting classrooms. We also talk with parents/guardians on the phone and in person.
SCHEDULING
If students are interested (for next school year) in Independent Study, Work-Based Learning or Dual Enrollment , they should meet with their counselor before mid-April. Deadlines are approaching.

Seniors and Senior Parents/Guardians —- Have you already been accepted to colleges and are you receiving Financial Aid letters from them indicating your financial options? Not all letters are the same - different colleges have different forms/options, and each one can be a little confusing if you are not familiar with the format of those letters. See your school counselor who can help you review them and understand what you are being offered, so you can make an informed decision.
Seniors - Continue or start completing your college and trade school applications! See your school counselor to ask questions about how to get started.
FAFSA - Students applying to 2-year colleges, 4-year colleges, and trade schools are encouraged to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to be eligible for scholarships, grants, and federal aid. Most post-secondary schools participate with federal student aid programs, however, you can check with each school to be certain. Schools also sometimes use the FAFSA information to determine eligibility for their own in-house scholarships and grants. The FAFSA opens online Oct 1 for families to complete - the sooner you complete the more opportunities students are eligible for. See your school counselor with questions. https://studentaid.gov/apply-for-aid/fafsa/filling-out/help
When you are ACCEPTED to a college, trade school, military, job, or apprenticeship it is time to celebrate and let us know! Each time you receive an acceptance, complete this Accepted Google Form. Your school counselors want to celebrate with you.
GO SENIORS!!! Complete for EACH acceptance you receive this school year, then go to the Office to see Mrs. Tew for some candy :)

Hand2Hand Permission Slip Instructions
Dear Parent/Guardian:
We would like to offer your student the opportunity to participate in a program at Hopkins High School called “Hand2Hand”. This program helps provide a student with food for the weekends and is intended for families who currently may be experiencing a financial burden.
Here’s how Hand2Hand will work: At the end of the week students who are signed up for the program will receive a minimum of 10 food items in a black school logo drawstring bag that will be provided at the first week of participation. These food items will be a combination of breakfast, snacks, lunch and/or dinner items. While the food items are meant for the student, they can be shared among the family as well. (Please note: if your student or another family member has food allergies it will be the responsibility of the parent/guardian to check the contents of the backpack each week to ensure the food doesn’t contain ingredients which could cause an allergic reaction).
There is no cost to participate! If you sign your student up to receive Hand2Hand, they will continue to receive the weekly bags each week they are at Hopkins High School. However, if down the road you no longer need the assistance, simply write a note expressing your desire to discontinue receiving Hand2Hand bags and give this note to the school office. This opportunity is being provided by LifeChange Community Church. To learn more about Hand2Hand, please visit their website: http://h2hkids.org.
If you feel your student would benefit from this opportunity, please complete the response form at the bottom of this letter and we will make sure that your student’s name is then added to the list. Your response will be kept confidential.
Sincerely,
Ken Szczepanski
