NEWS & UPDATES FROM SM NORTH
Dear SMSD Families,
We are coming to the end of another successful year in the Shawnee Mission School District (SMSD). This time of year is full of celebration for all that has been accomplished, along with feelings of nostalgia over what will be missed as students and staff move on to what comes next.
I am writing to share the dates for the end of the 2022-23 school year in the Shawnee Mission School District:
- The last day of school for Pre-kindergarten (Pre-K) students will be Monday, May 22, 2023.
- The last day of school for K-11 students will be Tuesday, May 23, 2022 (early dismissal)
We are close to the finish line, but there is still important work to be done. Let’s dig deep and finish the year strong. Thank you for all you do to support the education of your children. Together, we are One Shawnee Mission!
Sincerely,
Dr. Michelle HubbardSuperintendent
Transportation Update
Beginning April 11, DS Bus Lines will implement roster checks to verify registered riders. Any student at the bus stop that isn’t registered will be transported to school and will be noted in a written communication by the bus driver for the school office. The official stop ride date will be April 14th.
Please contact Dana Gulick, Transportation Coordinator with any questions.
MUST BRING YOU STUDENT ID TO PURCHASE AND TO GET INTO THE DANCE
Due to limited capacity at Arrowhead, we wanted to share how ticket sales for Prom will be handled.
During the first week of sales, April 11-14: Only North students in grades 11th and 12th can buy tickets. They will sell both online and in the cafeteria. Online ticket sales have a service charge, and students must show emailed confirmation in the cafeteria to pick up their physical tickets.
Starting April 17-21, the second week of ticket sales, Juniors and Seniors may purchase tickets for their guests from the other grades or an outside guest. Should someone want to bring an outside guest, they must be pre-approved by the front office. You can do this by picking up an Out of School Guest Form in the front office, starting on April 3rd. The guest must be on the approved list at the time of ticket purchase.
TICKETS WILL NOT BE SOLD AT THE DOOR
Questions can be answered by Monica Morris, the Junior Class sponsor at monicamorris@smsd.org
If you plan on bringing an out of school guest to prom this year, the Out of School Guest Form can now be picked up from the front office. Out of school guest forms have to be turned in and pre-approved BEFORE purchasing tickets. Tickets begin to be sold next week April 11-21. Though, students wishing to bring an out of school guest or an underclassman can only purchase their ticket beginning the second week of ticket sales, April 17.
February ACT
We have received scores for the free junior ACT given at North in February. If you were able to set up your MyACT account in February, you can log in to view your complete score report. You can also access your Composite and sub scores under Test Scores in your Skyward account on Wednesday, April 5.
Graduation Information
Announcements NOT picked up last week are available in the main office.
(Cap and Gown are handed out at graduation practice on the Seniors last day)
All Seniors should have ordered a cap and gown from Jostens. If you have not done that, please click on the link below and get that taken care of ASAP.

Greetings Shawnee Mission North!
My name is Coach Fothergill, the head Swim and Dive coach for the boys team here at North. On behalf of our athletic department and the boys and girls swim and dive programs here, we are very happy to be able to once again host a Swim and Dive Clinic for students in the North feeder schools! The clinic will be this coming Saturday, April 8th.
This will be our 6th Clinic, but the first since 2019. We really enjoy having future Bison come for a couple hours and learn a few things in the pool, have a great time, and begin to feel a greater connection to North. The swim and dive teams at North have a long tradition of success and a strong community at North. Neither team ever cuts athletes for the team so we really can be a sport for anyone who has the desire to be a part of it.
I am attaching a flyer along with a link below that has details about the clinic as well as the Clinic Registration QR code and the link to the google form listed here below:

If you have an elementary school or Hocker Grove family member or friend who might be interested in the clinic, please share this information with them.
If a student shows an interest in the clinic, but has a challenge with the Registration fee, PLEASE communicate that to me and we can work to help with their fee for the clinic. It is $25 for elementary students and $15 for Hocker Grove students.
Please let me know what other questions you have. I look forward to having a pool full of future North Bison on April 8th!
Students school fees for 2022-23 are now past due!
Student fee email notifications were sent out on Friday, February 10th.
- The Online fee payment portal can be found at https://payments.efundsforschools.com/v3/districts/55790 You can set up an account or pay as a guest using the student’s last name and ID number.
- Fees not paid by June 1st or graduation for seniors may be sent to the Collections agency.
- Any questions regarding fees, payments, or to arrange a payment plan should be directed to SMN bookkeeper, Shelle Lewis at Shellelewis@smsd.org or 913-993-6910.
- Families qualifying for free or reduced lunch can receive a waiver for part of the fees if they provide the bookkeeper with a copy of their Food Service benefits letter.
HEALTH UPDATE
To those families who are contacted through the remainder of the school year, by the nurse’s office staff.
We will be excluding students we have identified as missing required vaccinations until they receive them. We have exhausted our efforts at getting those done.
To prevent a delay in enrolling in the fall, those students who are missing any vaccinations will be called to the nurse’s office and parent/guardian will be called to pick them up.
If you believe you have a student in need of a required vaccine please feel free to call 913-993-9704 or 913-993-6916.
There are community based supports that we may recommend so that your student may remain in school.
We are here to help!
Notes from the NURSE
You may have recently heard news reports about increases of illness including allergies this spring, as is typical with this time of year. In SMSD, we have begun to see increases in absence due to illness; with a few physician diagnosed illnesses and many generalized symptoms.
One of the most important things to help decrease the spread of illness is for those who are not feeling well to stay home. If your child has a temperature of over 100.0 or has vomited or has had diarrhea, they must stay home. Students may return to school when they have been free from fever (without medication), vomiting, or diarrhea for 24 hours.
Your child may also be ill, but without these symptoms. They may have a sore throat, headache, cough, or generally not feel well. If you suspect illness, please keep your child home. If in doubt about sending your child to school, contact the school nurse or your child’s doctor.
Weekly Schedule Reminders....
Please always check the school calendar for the most up to date schedule SMN Calendar
- April 12, 13, 14: Actor's studio: Scenes from Shakespeare
- April 18: Charity Picnic (modified schedule: seminar in afternoon)
- April 22: Prom

Our school district has selected the Student Insurance Plan from K&K Insurance Group to make reliable coverage available to parents. If you don’t have other insurance, this plan may be a resource to consider. Additionally, even if you have other coverage, this plan can help fill expensive “gaps' ' caused by deductibles and copays.
