Dear Falcon Friends and Families,

There are signs that indicate the coming of the next season. In winter, we see the signs of spring when crocuses and daffodils begin to bloom. When we see the first tint of yellow and orange in the leaves of the trees we know that autumn is on the horizon. The first indication of the approaching school year is our Kindergarten Transition Program which began this past week here at Forest Hills.

Twenty-six of our newest Falcons joined kindergarten teacher Tammi Leach and Educational Assistant Renee Broadway for four two hour sessions of joyful learning this week. Our music teacher Allison Hedgepeth even stopped by one day to lead a couple of songs. It was wonderful being able to meet approximately half of our new kindergarteners and their families. Their curiosity and eagerness to learn was infectious, and I am confident this upcoming school year will be a great one.

This is our first newsletter of the year and families should expect one each week typically coming each Friday. Please pay special attention to upcoming events and place them on your calendars, as we have many activities planned.

Smart Start is an opportunity specifically for our students with 504s and IEPs, and their parents and guardians, to make introductions with their teachers and to feel prepared for the start of school. Smart Start is typically held the Thursday before the first day of school. The next one is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 31, 2023 12:30 - 2:30 at Forest Hills.

Teachers will be familiar with students' plans and accommodations. To help better know your students, please complete the attached one-page profile or create one on your own ahead of time, and give it to the teacher at the Smart Start introduction.

Also, to assist in your family’s preparation for the new school year use the Smart Start checklist for parents and guardians of students with 504s and IEPs.

For the safety of children, volunteers are required to have an approved background check when volunteering in schools.

To help streamline compliance with state and school board policies, which require that all volunteers have background checks and knowledge of other board policies -- as well as state-mandated proof of vaccination (or a qualified exemption) -- we are introducing a new all-in-one volunteer application and approval process through ou Raptor Visitor Management System.

Submitting an online application initiates the background check process. Once submitted, applicants will receive an email upon approval of your background check and you will be given access through the onsite Raptor System at all schools. Please allow up to three weeks to process your approval.

Volunteers need to submit only one application for volunteering in all LOSD schools. Applications need to be submitted annually to capture changes in background checks, policies, and/or vaccination requirements.
