From Your Pastors
Dear Zion family –
It’s the last week of school before summer vacation at Zion! While families are looking forward to some downtime and vacations, please pray especially for our eighth graders who are transitioning into their next big season of life. We are proud of them and the strong Christian leaders they are becoming!
Rev. Kyle Borcherding
Zion is seeking a new Director of Worship, and the Worship Director Committee has invited Rev. Kyle Borcherding to come to Zion for a visit. Pastor Borcherding is an ordained LCMS pastor who currently serves as the worship pastor at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church in Avon, Indiana, where he leads their modern worship services, has played organ for their traditional services, plans both their traditional and modern formats, and coordinates volunteer needs for all services. In addition, he regularly preaches and teaches Bible classes. Pastor Borcherding is married to Kelsey, and is a father to Trevor, Emma, and Avery. Pastor Borcherding will visit Zion the weekend of June 10 and 11 and will lead worship at 8 am and 10:45 am that Sunday. Following the 10:45 am service, you’re invited to a lunch and Q&A time with Pastor Borcherding in the lobby. We’re asking everyone who attends to bring a dish to share, using the following guide:
· Last name A-J: Dessert
· Last name K-R: Main Dish
· Last name S-Z: Side Dish or Salad
We’re excited to have Pastor Borcherding and his family visit. Please pray for the Worship Director Committee as it continues to seek who God might be bringing to join our team!
Here’s to Heroes
We wrap up our series “Here’s to Heroes” by honoring those, this Memorial Day weekend, who have given their lives in service to our nation. We’ll reflect on Jesus’ words in John 15:9-15:
“As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you. Now remain in My love. If you keep My commands, you will remain in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s
commands and remain in His love. I have told you this so that My joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are My friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.”
Jesus says the greatest act of love is found in sacrifice. This weekend, we’ll celebrate the church festival of Pentecost and honor those who have sacrificed everything – even their very lives – for our freedom. Join us this Sunday for worship at 8 am in our beautiful sanctuary, at 10:45 am in our fabulous worship center, or online at zionwalburg.org.
Your pastors love you!
– Pastor Zach & Pastor Kevin

A Message From the Principal
Graduations for Kindergarten and 8th Grade – Wednesday the 24th
It is hard to believe that this time is once again upon us. Our Kindergarten class will have a fun graduation service, starting at 6 pm in the Worship Center. At 7 pm our 8th grade class will graduate. Giving the address is Dr. Hannah Meineke, a professor of education at Concordia University. We have another incredible group of students we will be sending on their way to high school. Please come to either or both. All are welcome! There is a reception sponsored by Thrivent Financial after the 8th grade graduation. Thrivent Financial is hosting a reception after the 8th grade graduation – with an opportunity to provide a gift of $1000 to a charity – in honor of this class. More information will be shared at graduation.
Last Day of School
Friday is the last day of school at Zion. We dismiss at 12:30 pm for the summer. We will have our closing chapel at 8:15 am, which will include sharing Citizenship Awards and saying goodbye to several staff members. After a short break, we will resume with the Christian Character Awards for athletics, as well as the Lutheran Junior Honor Association Awards.
Then we will dismiss back to classrooms. Kona Ice will be on campus and Chic-fil-A lunches will be provided as a gift from our Parent Teacher League. Classroom time will be spent with goodbyes and a wonderful, prayerful send-off for each child.
8th Grade Position Opening
We have changed things up a bit due to our conversations with potential teacher candidates. Instead of a science/math combination, we are hopeful to find a teacher certified in just science. If you have an interest or know someone who might be – please have them contact Mr. Wrege or Mrs. Winkelman, at thomas.wrege@zionwalburg.org or suzan.winkelman@zionwalburg.org Both a cover letter and resume are required. Continue to pray that God will fill this position appropriately.
Safety
We have begun to prioritize our needs. The cost of the following two items will amount to $92,154. We currently have donations totaling $30,000, which has become a “Challenge Grant.” So, we need to raise that much (another $30,000) to match it. We truly appreciate the size of any gift. You can do so by check or by going online to our website ( www.zionwalburg.org ) clicking on the “Give” button, and at the drop-down menu by selection “School Donation.” Also, checks may be made out to “Zion Lutheran School,” with the word “Safety” placed on the memo line. Thank you!
Create a panic button system: This would allow staff members to contact authorities with the push of one button.
- Upgrade and add to the school cameras system: We have mapped out where additional cameras should be placed both internally and externally, the footage accessible on the phones of Zion’s administrators. It is of note that this will include every entrance, as well as our playground.
Contact Principal Wrege if you would like to provide more input or assist in any way. thomas.wrege@zionwalburg.org
Thank you!
What a wonderful year it has been. God has blessed us with all of you, and with your children. We have prayed for them and for you often. God has worked among us in so many ways, and we will continue to work to add value for everyone involved in our school program. Your support has not gone unnoticed. We appreciate each of you and wish for you a wonderful summer.
Communication During the Summer
Watch for periodical updates throughout the summer months. We have already been planning out the new school year. We will announce our newest teachers, as we hire them. All details about our August return will be shared as soon as they are available.

Commissioning Sunday, May 28
The Senior High Ministry is very excited to go to Cape Coral, FL on our summer mission trip with Team Effort Missions in the first week of June. Before we go, there will be time in our service where all participants will be prayed over and commissioned out into the mission field to encourage and share the love of Christ with others in their work, service, and actions. Thank you to all who have supported us and please keep us in your prayers as we go out and help those who have been affected by Hurricane Ian!
Faith and Film Series
Registration is open now for Zion’s Faith and Film at the Palace Theater, which begins Sunday, July 2, at 5:30 p.m. The series runs for four consecutive Sunday nights through July 23. Popcorn, drinks, and curriculum are included with all registrations, including an option for a tasty selection from the Wildfire Gill.
Find directions and details here: <https://www.parabolicmedia.com/ffp/>. We will use the Church Center application to register: <https://zionwalburg.churchcenter.com/registrations/events/1737458>
Be mission-minded and include extra seats for that unchurched friend, neighbor, or relative so they can have Gospel messages revealed to them through these movies and discussions. Your registered seats can be claimed in any combination over the four nights in the series.
The registration process has two steps.
First, one person (called the Attendee on the form) selects a package based on the food option and the anticipated number of seats needed to accommodate their guests for the series. A confirmation email will be sent with a registration code.
Second step: Using that code, each participant will complete their own RSVP form each week. This is also where they can pre-order the food selection if that option was included in their group’s registration.
