2024 SUMMER RESIDENTIAL GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL
Applications for Summer Residential Governor's School will soon be released. This is a 3-week free program for students to attend a Virginia University during the summer. You only have to get there (generally held at University of Richmond, Radford, Lynchburg, and Virginia Tech) and pay the activities fee ( about $200, and waivable if necessary). Students can attend humanities, agriculture, math/science/technology, medicine and health sciences, or marine sciences. Students' room and board (meals) are paid for by the state.
Freedom had its first student attend last year, and they had so much fun. They said about SRGS, "Gov school was so much fun!! I was so happy I went! The food was amazing and the dorms were so nice. I made friends and learned a lot. Also! I was never bored, they always has something for us to do. I loved it so much, I cried when I left. Can I apply again? I would love to go there again."
How Do Students Apply?
Applications will be released soon. Students who have expressed explicit interest will be pulled during a series of FLEX Tuesdays to meet with me and complete the application process. Students will need 2 letters of recommendation from a teacher or counselor, a completed application, and an essay (prompt provided in application). Students who are seriously interested will have the chance to work with me during FLEX and other periods to work on and edit their applications.
Students cannot apply without meeting with me. The gifted resource teacher has to send the applications to the relevant committees.
What can students do now to prepare?
Please browse the SRGS websites for general information.
