February 2024 Newsletter
Message from Princpal Lisa Langford
February is a month that we share the Love of Reading! We will celebrate this at Collier the week of February 12th -16th and hold our Family Literacy Night on Tuesday, February 13th at 5:30pm. Reading is a great way to build strong relationships with others, wether you are sharing time reading aloud together as a family, or talking about a favorite book with a friend. Spending time reading 15 mintues a day will boost your child's vocabulary, imagination, and help support their academinc learning for the rest of their lives.
If you are looking for ways to get books at home here are some options for you!
- Your child may check out two books each week at the Collier Library
- You may take a book from the Little Free Library in our front parking lot
- The Kirk Bear Canyon Library is located just down the street and now has Saturday hours!
- The Goodwill or Dollar Store at the corner also both have books that are reasonably priced

Reminders from the Office
We want to make sure that your children arrive home in the manner that you would like them to. If you have changes to the normal way that your student is headed home, please make sure to either send a note in with them for their teacher or please call the Collier office. This will ensure that your child is at the correct place for afternoon dismissal.
There are a couple ways to inform the office about your child's absence. You can call the office and report or you can go onto your ParentVue page and mark your child absent from there.
If your child is late to school, you must come into the office with them to sign them in.
Thank you for your support!

Please know that my office door is always open, and I am readily available to listen, support, and guide your child through any challenges they may encounter. OMA Gold
As usual, things in OMA classes are very busy!
All classes have begun their work on our schoolwide biome/ecosystem/habitat project. I’m told some of you have already heard about the hard work we are doing to research the wildlife that lives in or migrates through the Sonoran Desert. Besides this, we will continue to cover grade specific science units this month.
Our Plein Air art lesson was wonderful – students took to the open air to sketch with water soluble graphite pencils, and created some amazing works based on what they could see in their surroundings. This month, we look forward to a visit from the Museum of Contemporary Art’s teaching artist on February 14th and 16th. In honor of Love of Reading Week, students will create art based on poetry.
In addition, our kindergarten and first grade students will be traveling to Sabino High School on February 15. They have been invited to watch a special presentation by their drama students that honors Love of Reading Week.
Don’t forget to ask your students what they are learning about in OMA, and to look for this month’s Featured Artists’ work in the main hallway!
