Student Voices Amplified at Charter Legislation Advocacy Day - January 31, 2024
We are elated to showcase the impactful outcomes of Charter Legislation Advocacy Day held on January 31, 2024, orchestrated by The Maryland Charter Alliance. This event celebrated the compelling voices of different charter schools in Marland including our own 42 high school students representing CMIT North High School who passionately advocated for Facilities Funding for Public Charter Schools in Annapolis.
Taking center stage in Maryland's state capital, the Miller Senate Office Building, Maryland House Office Building, and the Maryland State House were witness to the enthusiastic assembly of our students, staff, and charter operators. Together, they stood united in urging legislators to recognize the critical need for facilities funding in public charter schools.
Currently, Maryland does not allocate funds for facilities in public charter schools, forcing them to rely on the annual per-pupil allotment (PPA) to meet facility-related expenses. The students participating in Charter Advocacy Day seized the opportunity to engage directly with delegates and senators, passionately advocating for the passage of legislation that addresses this crucial gap.
Their appeal focused on encouraging Maryland to join the ranks of 10 states and districts that have recently enacted legislation related to facilities funding for public charter schools. Through sharing compelling narratives and emphasizing the profound impact of adequate funding on educational outcomes, the students aimed to drive positive change in Maryland's educational landscape.
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to all contributors to Charter Advocacy Day. The commitment of these students to the cause is fundamental to the ongoing pursuit of equitable facility funding for public charter schools in Maryland.

For Ms. O'Donnell's Class:
Students in Ms. O'Donnell's classes are starting their novel units. Below are details of the books each period is reading. If you would like to purchase the book for your student, they are available on Amazon or through the public library.
7/8th period. A Mango Shaped Space. Wendy Maas ISBN 0316058254
1st period. Flowers for Algernon. Daniel Keyes. ISBN 0156030306
The Honors students are completing their maps of Maycomb, Alabama, the fictional town in To Kill A Mockingbird.
Other notes:
Please ensure your student has a pen/pencil, composition book, and folder for class every day. Students are out of the habit of bringing these items to class after the winter break, holidays, and snow days.
Students are trying to adopt a new habit this quarter and have chosen "accountability" partners to keep them on track. Ask your student about it! Every Friday they will have a check-in and see how well they are doing.
As always, if you have any questions about what is happening in the classroom, please let me know. Thank you for all you do to support your student!
