Book Orders for Author Visit Due Nov. 8
Willowbrook Elementary is delighted to welcome author Tae Keller on Wednesday, November 9 at 1:00 p.m. in the library. Click the green button below to find an order form for a signed copy.
Tae Keller grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she subsisted on kimchi, purple rice, and stories. Now, she writes about biracial girls trying to find their voices and lives in Seattle with her husband and a multitude of books. She is the author of The Science of Breakable Things and When You Trap a Tiger, winner of the Newberry Medal.
Ms. Keller will talk with 3rd and 4th-grade students about her career as an author and discuss her new book, Mihi Ever After. In the book, Keller and illustrator Geraldine Rodríguez deliver a middle-grade fantasy adventure about three girls who fall into a fairy tale world. Should they stay forever, or find a way to escape?
November is Native American Heritage Month
District 30 joins our nation in recognizing November as National Native American Heritage Month or, as it is also referred to, American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month.
According to the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI), this month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people. It's also a time to learn about tribes, gain awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.

We look forward to celebrating Halloween with classroom parties and an all-school parade. All students are invited to proudly wear their costumes on Monday, October 31. For safety reasons, and out of respect to our younger population of students, we ask that students DO NOT bring weapons or wear masks to school. It is difficult to judge what is a scary mask or whether a student's vision is impeded. If parents understand this policy ahead of time, families can prepare an appropriate school costume.
There will be time for students to change into their costumes or retrieve accessories from their lockers after lunch. The morning preschool parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. Our little ones will parade through the hallways for all to see. Our all-school parade begins at 1:30 p.m. Please see the map below that shows our route up and down Happy Hollow Road. We will place our preK and Kindergarten students at the front of the parade, just behind the Maple percussionists. In the event of inclement weather, we will hold an indoor parade.
PTO room parents will lead classroom parties from 2:15 to 2:45 p.m. This should give us enough time to open the pick-up lanes and pack the students up.
Upcoming Musical Performances:
- 5th Grade - November 10
- Kindergarten - January 26
- 3rd & 4th Grade - March 16
- 1st & 2nd Grade - May 11

2023 School Board Elections
Caucus Endorsement Deadline is Nov. 21
Candidates who are interested in seeking endorsement from the District 30 School Board Caucus should contact Co-Chairs Karen Burstein (email@example.com) and Katie Schick (firstname.lastname@example.org) by Monday, November 21. The School Board Caucus is a committee of District 30 residents that includes families both with and without children enrolled in Willowbrook, Wescott and Maple schools. The Caucus' role is to source, screen and endorse potential school board candidates. To be considered by the Caucus, candidates will need to complete a detailed application as well as an interview.
Nominating Petition Deadline is Dec. 19
Northbrook/Glenview School District 30 will have four school board seats to be filled at the Consolidated Election on April 4, 2023. Candidates who are elected will fill four-year terms expiring in April 2027.
Candidates for the office of the school board can now circulate nominating petitions for signatures. The period for filing nominating petitions runs from December 12 through December 19, 2022.
A candidate for the school board is required to file the nominating petitions, Statement of Candidacy, and receipt for filing their Statement of Economic Interests with the applicable county election clerk and not with the school board secretary or the administrative offices of the school district. The county clerk may have petition forms available, or blank petitions may be downloaded from the State Board of Elections website: elections.il.gov.
Candidates may also want to consult the “2023 Candidate’s Guide” (https://www.elections.il.gov//Downloads/ElectionOperations/PDF/2023CanGuide.pdf), which can be downloaded from the Illinois State Board of Elections website, or contact the county clerk or board of election commissioners regarding the requirements of filing. Candidates and voters can get information about District 30 from our website and learn about being a school board member from the Illinois Association of School Boards at: iasb.com/elections.
