We can't believe that this school year is about to come to an end. This summer, we will continue to send our Henry Hawk News to keep you updated on our summer activities and preparation for the new school year.

Chromebook Return (grades PK-7):

Families are asked to return their child’s chromebook or iPad on 6/22/21 between 9am and 1pm at door #3. Please help spread the word. Thank you!

All Henry students are welcome to attend our Field Day on Tuesday, June 22nd.

Students in grades PreK to 3rd grade, along with their parent/guardian, are welcome to join us for some fun at 8:30am to 10:30am. Unfortunately siblings that are not currently attending Henry are not able to attend.

Students in 4th through 8th grade, with a permission form, can join us for fun from 1:15pm to 3:15pm. Unfortunately siblings not currently attending Henry are unable to attend.

Enter the campus through the gate on Cullom Avenue and register at our registration desk. We will also have the permission forms at the table for you to sign.

The permission form can be found in the attachment below. You can fill it out and email it back to Ms. Abraham at ldabraham@cps.edu.

If your child is hybrid they do not need a permission form.

During the last LSC Meeting that was held on Tuesday, June 8th, the 2021-2022 school fee has changed. The 2021-2022 uniform policy will remain the same.

Attached below are the supply lists for the 2021-2022 school year.

Henry will be a meal distribution site this summer. Meal distribution will be from June 21st through August 20th from 9:00-1:00. No meal distribution will occur on July 5th.

If you didn't get a chance to complete the Henry Parent Survey last week, we would appreciate it if you can take some time to complete it this week. This survey will help our school support our families in transitioning back to school for the fall. Thank you for your time.

When: Monday, June 21st

Goal: For 4th grade students to become more comfortable with the transition from elementary school to middle school and for 4th grade students to learn about middle school programs and procedures

Station one: Visit 201 and meet the teacher, see the classroom, and learn about Summit platform

Station two: Visit 203 and meet the teacher, see the classroom, and learn about additional online programs

Station three: Students watch a video about the dos and don’ts of middle school and have a student panel to ask students questions-with Mrs. Garfinkel

Summer is approaching quickly!

You may not have a ton of free time, but here are some suggestions of books you can read to help you navigate the world of parenting. We all need help and advice sometime, so hopefully one of these books will meet your needs:

How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk and Siblings Without Rivalry, both by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish. Both books walk you through true-to-life scenarios, with small suggestions that “magically” make huge differences when you find yourself having the same kinds of conversations in real life. For a few months a while back, my husband and I each had a dog-eared copy of “Siblings” next to our bed, and I often quickly skimmed a few pages before I raced off to break up yet another squabble.

Get Out of My Life, but First Could You Drive Me and Cheryl to the Mall: A Parent’s Guide to the New Teenager, By Anthony E. Wolf. The title alone shows Wolf understands life with teenagers. And like Faber, he gives practical tips for situations that really happen.

Quirky Kids: Understanding and Helping Your Child Who Doesn’t Fit In – When to Worry and When Not to Worry by Perri Klass and Eileen Costello. Nearly every child is “quirky” in some way at some time. Klass and Costello, both pediatricians, are good at sorting out what will pass and what needs a closer look.

How to Raise Kind Kids: And Get Respect, Gratitude, and a Happier Family in the Bargain by Thomas Lickona .We all want kids who choose to be kind, and developmental psychologist Dr. Thomas Lickona makes the point in “How to Raise Kind Kids” that kindness doesn’t exist in a vacuum but happens when kids have other virtues as well, such as gratitude and courage. Using both research and practical tips from other families, Lickona explains how parents can give their kids the tools they need to be not only kind, but also happy.

The Self-Driven Child: The Science and Sense of Giving Your Kids More Control over Their Lives by William Stixrud, Ph.D., and Ned Johnson. Tired of asking your kids to do something for the thousandth time and wondering how to get them to care enough to do it themselves without you having to nag? “The Self-Driven Child” may be just the book for you. The authors are a clinical neuropsychologist and the founder of a tutoring service, which may make them a bit of an odd pair, but from different perspectives they saw parents struggling with one big issue: how to motivate their kids. In the book, they distill the science of how the brain works to help parents understand what they can do to help kids succeed (Hint: That often means taking a step, or several, back.)
