Snow is a beautiful natural phenomenon that typically heralds the coming of winter and represents the change of the seasons. It inspires excitement for the holidays and nostalgia for childhoods spent enjoying the magic of every snowflake.

Dreaming of snow is mysterious and magical. Winter and snow are a time of hibernation in relation to our inner being. Snow dreams are a symbol of spiritual awakening and inner awareness. It is the season of winter when the spirit gradually releases itself from daily, earthly concerns. Snow dreams allow us to forget the rules of space and time, allowing us to travel to a distant faraway land - even if we have never been there physically. The dream can be connected to our emotions due to the frozen crystalline water that is made within the snow life cycle.

If I’m listening to the sound of laughter, the vibrations have a positive effect on me and I can’t help but smile. Seeing children at play inspires me to tap into my inner joy. I happen upon an act of kindness or a beautiful scene and wear the joy I feel as a smile.

Smiling is natural to me and is one of my favorite spiritual tools. A smile can turn a challenging day around. A moment of good cheer can brighten a murky outlook. I take a quiet moment in prayerful contemplation to remember some of the things that make me smile. As I think of those things, my countenance is filled with light, and I am beaming.

Joy is a wondrous way to express my feelings. I feel joyful down to my bones, and my cells dance with delight. I feel blessed and I smile!

Peace is an enduring spiritual theme, especially this time of year. Calls for peace are everywhere-on decorations, in commercials, and on Christmas cards. We sing about peace. We wish for it and we call on our spirits. And yet the peace we crave eludes us.

Maybe we are asking wrongly when we seek peace outside ourselves without first knowing it within. We already have perfect peace within us. We don’t need to create it, but we do need to claim it. The beauty and simplicity of that idea is perfectly expressed in the song Let There Be Peace on Earth.

Although it is a well-known staple throughout the world not everyone is aware of this beloved song’s origins. In the summer of 1955, lyricist Jill Jackson-Miller and her musician husband Sy listened to a radio program featuring the idea that for peace to become a reality it must first be in the hearts and practice of the individual. She said she woke up one morning with the phrase “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.”

I have heard “Let There Be Peace on Earth” thousands of times and never grow weary of it. Each time I hear it, it seems to affirm my commitment to bring about a peaceful planet and the awareness that the power to create lasting peace must begin in my heart.

While the month of December has set in I had to reflect on the past few days as Thanksgiving sometimes takes a back seat to the upcoming holiday. For our family Thanksgiving is a day of gratitude and togetherness. It is meant to be about family and being thankful for everything that we have. It is a time to take a hand to those dearest to you and celebrate another year of all the great things that have taken place. A time not to lose the true meaning, not to stress out in the preparation and to focus on laughing and being in the essence of family. Thanksgiving is a special time of the year. Whatever it means to you, whether it is a spiritual time, a little stressful, or highly enjoyable, I hope you were able to seize the moment.

As we entered into November we started our talks of whether to go south and visit relatives or stay home and enjoy the day with friends. We have a senior Great Dane and it is hard to find a place to house her when we are away. That played a major course in the route that we took which was staying at home. The month was an unusually calm month for our family. Our son was up to date on all school assignments and looking forward to the 5-day break. Right before the break he was required to do a job shadow assignment. He chose to shadow the owner of a contracted postal service. He came home with questions intrigued about how logistically everything moves. Preparation for Thanksgiving at home this year was a bit more tedious than previous years with shelves not properly stocked and having to go from store to store to find items needed. All in all, we made it happen. Thanksgiving Day arrived with the family watching the Thanksgiving Day parade in New York. We eagerly awaited guests while finishing up the final touches for Lunch. The Blueberry Crisp, Cherry and Pumpkin Pies were chilling while the pecan fudge was being cut for appetizers. Prior to lunch we all stood near while each of us gave gratitude for one thing thankful in our lives over the past year.

As I welcome you into the new month and last month of the year I have to say I cannot believe we are here. I have enjoyed and loved every moment of 2021. Thank you, my dear friend, for holding my hand and walking with me through these amazing times.

Did you know the month of December brings the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere? This is the shortest day of the year (the day with the least amount of daylight). In 2021, the solstice occurs on Tuesday, December 21.

December starts on the same day of the week as September every year and ends on the same day as April every year.

December is Spiritual Literacy Month. Spiritual Literacy Month challenges us to read at least one book on spirituality.

December's traditional birthstone is turquoise. It is considered a symbol of good fortune and success.

December's birth flowers are the holly and the paperwhite Narcissus a relative of the daffodil with beautiful white blooms.

December zodiac signs are Sagittarius and Capricorn. Sagittarius love exploring and wandering the world. They always have tons of energy and are up for any adventure. They can be impatient at times but also the most loyal friend you’ll ever have. Capricorns are the ultimate worker bees; they're ambitious, organized, practical, goal-oriented, and they don't mind the hustle. “They're ready to give up a lot in order to achieve that goal.” They also love making their own rules, which means they strive to reach high career positions.

1st Card: King of Swords:

This determined fairy king embodies power, intelligence, and an untamable will. Austere but elegant, he holds his sword high, symbolizing his power, command and authority. I’m stick. I’m not where I want to be but I don’t know how to move forward. What does, if anything, does Spirit have to say?

Hi!

Good news - you’re stuck! Great news actually. Being stuck is an opportunity for us to find stillness and to be asking ourselves the questions we need answers to. Start inviting new energy into your space and movement by moving small things around your house; rearrange future, organize, get rid of things. This provides new energy and a new perspective to help unstick you. If you’re stuck you might want to start using the time to get comfortable in your aloneness. Find peace within yourself, keep in mind you already have everything within you.

Nothing is forever, even feeling stuck. Which leads me to another point, is it stuckness you’re feeling or stillness? Sometimes Spirit provides us with stillness right before things begin to amp up in our life.

Whether it’s stuckness or stillness it is still a great opportunity for you to find movement without self and outside self. You are in control of being stuck.

Dear Santa,

I have been feeling cynical lately, and my list for this old world has taken on the look of Christmas lampoon rather than a heartfelt letter to you.

So, in search of the true Christmas spirit, I decided to pull up one of the most famous editorials ever written, "Is there a Santa Claus?" It is largely recognized by this phrase: "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus."

Seems like 8-year-old Virginia was having a case of the doubts. It must have been a bad case because that was way back in 1897, when neither the internet nor Grinches had any place in our vocabulary. She decided to write her first letter, not to you St. Nick, but rather to the editor of The New York Sun.

Dear Editor,

I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, "If you see it in The Sun, it's so." Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?

Now, I like to believe that editors can be reliable resources, and Francis Pharcellus Church (what a great name) did not disappoint, although he was perhaps one of the least likely fellows to be talking on your behalf. In fact, he was so against writing the editorial he refused to have his name attached anywhere or in any way. What a blunder. More than a century later it is the most reprinted editorial in any newspaper in the English language.

My favorite part of the editorial goes:

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence.

We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Within those words I found my answer. I only need to find that external light that filled my childhood. And it didn't take long. I can see my Christmas of 1972 as clearly as it was yesterday. True confessions, Santa, in the middle of the night after you had visited our drafty, one-story apartment I crept into the living room. The cedar tree was alight with those big multicolored bulbs and tinsel hung in straight, icy columns. It was a beautiful tree in the eye of a child, certainly the most beautiful a 7-year-old could ever imagine.

Under the tree, way in the back, I spotted a wrapped outline of a very oversized package. I was so excited because at that age, I thought it was something I really wanted.

I could hardly wait until the next morning, when my siblings and I opened the gifts, you left us. But when Mom handed the oversized package to my older brother, I had to choke back the tears. But, you knew, Santa, what I really wanted in my heart. As I unwrapped my gift, I saw everything needed to start a toy train village.

None of my childhood Christmas memories are complete without our journey. Visiting the Boys Club and watching the reenactment of the birth of Christ, driving around on Christmas Eve to see all the lights, stopping at the local flower shop to walk along the decorated windows, and finally waking up to homemade Chocolate Drops and pecan fudge.

I dwelt on this memory for a long time until my heart was full, Santa.

So, this year I have only one thing on my Christmas list. Please Santa, after you deliver the toys for the good little girls and boys, please scatter some "Christmas memory dust" down the chimney so the adults in this world will pause and think back to their own Christmas memories.

And maybe, if they can once again look at this season through their "external light" of childhood they will rediscover what both you and I have known for a long time:

Christmas is not a material thing. It is the hope of something wonderful and magical.
