Reardan Weekly

The Options Program went to the Spokane Fish Hatchery for a field trip. The students got to see where the water comes from, how they harvest and fertilize the eggs, the various stages of a Rainbow Trout life cycle, feed trout and even got to pet a Sturgeon! We also brought home roughly 250 Rainbow Trout eggs to raise in our 75 gallon classroom tank. Over the next few months, the students will learn all about these fish and how to care for them both in and out of the classroom with a release in May! Stop in and see the life cycle yourself if you are ever in the building! We love sharing our fish with you!

Hi Parents,

Lately I have been asked more and more about school safety, our role as security in the school, and the state of our country as it pertains to our children’s safety. I have been told more than once that I can be a bit doom and gloom as it relates to school shootings and emergency preparedness. My calling in life has always been to help others, having my path lead me here to Reardan where I have the honor of protecting your children every day. We all know we live in a scary world where violence and chaos has become an unfortunate norm. While I like to focus on the fun parts of my job, playing at recess, hanging out with the kids at lunch, dressing up on spirit days, watching home sporting events, I have to stay focused on the darker side of why I am here. As the security and emergency manager I have the job to keep this school ready for any dangers that might come to Reardan. In the coming weeks I hope you remember all the reasons why you have your child at Reardan, which I am hoping one of those reasons is knowing Officer Foust and I are your child’s guardians while here at school. With that being said I want to take a moment to go down that doom and gloom path just as a reminder why we do what we do.

Facts About School Violence

· According to the FBI there were 50 active shooter events in 2022. 13 of those were considered mass killings according to the federal definition.

· Those 50 active shooter incidents resulted in 100 killed, and 213 wounded.

o The worst of those incidents were from 2022 being Robb Elementary in Uvalde TX, 21 killed, 17 wounded

o Other notable active shooter event, 2018 Parkland FL

· The casualty count from 2022 was the highest it has been in the last 5 years.

o 2018: 225. 86 killed. 139 wounded

o 2019: 258. 102 killed. 156 wounded

o 2020: 164. 38 killed. 126 wounded

o 2021: 243. 103 killed. 140 wounded

o 2022: 313. 100 killed. 213 wounded

· Local incidents included Freeman High School 2017 and Lewis and Clark High School 2003.

· 2019 Secret Service report states that 24% of school shootings take place in rural schools, with 37% of shootings happening in schools the size of Reardan (500-999).

· Also according to a Secret Service report, most attacks last less than 5 minutes, 2/3 of incidents are over in 2 minutes or less, nearly half of attacks end within 1 minute.

· According to Secret Service study, 93% of school shooters planned the attack in advance

o 4 out of 5 school shootings, at least one person had knowledge of the attacker’s plan but failed to report it.

· According to Sandy Hook Promise data, almost all mass shooters shared threatening or concerning messages or images. More than 75% raised concerns from others prior to the attack.

· Attackers vary in age, gender, student or stranger, there is no profile of a school shooter.

· Most school attackers use firearms.

· Uvalde Texas:

o Gunman killed 19 children and 2 teachers

o In 2 and a half minutes, before any law enforcement set foot into the building, more than 100 rounds had been fired towards students and staff

o By the time law enforcement arrived, 18 of the 21 students were believed to be dead.

We continue to train with regional law enforcement partners such as Spokane County Sheriff's Office, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Reardan Police Department, local and regional EMT and Fire Departments. For lunch yesterday we had the screaming eagle bowl, salad, cucumbers, grape tomatoes, snap peas, pears and chocolate milk.

This month’s character trait is Cooperation. We are noticing and rewarding students who are on time and prepared for class and following our school-wide expectations with backpacks and cell phones. As our middle school students grow and mature we are also increasing our expectations for their accountability. Students who are marked tardy will serve lunch detention the next day. Lunch detention consists of sitting at a designated quiet table in the commons and then spending recess time cleaning in the commons. This is how students “give back” time for being tardy. We are asking parents to make an extra effort to get students to school on time for first period so they are not marked tardy. Medical and other appointments are excused, however, being late for school more than 2-3 times in a quarter will result in lunch detention being assigned.

We are planning a January trip to the bowling alley in Medical Lake in January for students who have not had to attend “lunch table” with Mrs. Vesneske during first semester. These students have been conscientious of their grades and have not been on the weekly D and F list for the entire first half of the school year and that deserves celebrating! In February we will have a PBIS celebration for all students who have not been marked tardy for the month. We thank you for taking the time to talk with students about responsibility and cooperation as we continue to work toward getting ready for high school.

As we enter a cold snap, please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. Students go outside during inclement weather, as long as the temperature is above 20 degrees.

As the temperatures fluctuate, please consider the following tips:

• Layering: Dress your child in layers so they can adjust to changing temperatures throughout the day. This way, they can add or remove clothing as needed.
• Outerwear: Make sure your child has a suitable jacket or coat for colder days. Please put their name inside jackets or coats.
• Accessories: Don't forget to label accessories like hats, gloves, and scarves with your child’s name
• Footwear: Ensure your child wears appropriate footwear for the current weather conditions.

By dressing your child appropriately for the weather, you contribute to their overall well-being and make their time outdoors more enjoyable. Thank you in advance for your support.

In order to ensure the well-being and security of our young learners, we require that all students in grades K-6th have an adult chaperone present at all after-school events, including basketball games.

We understand that attending every after-school event may not always be possible due to various commitments. However, we kindly request that you make arrangements for a responsible adult to accompany your child whenever they participate/attend any after-school activity. This will not only ensure their safety but also maximize their enjoyment of the event.
