Carleton Washburne

Washburne's Autumnfest was held on Friday, giving students an opportunity to celebrate together as a student body. Washburne advisories created and hosted booths such as balloon pop, dunk tank, trivia, cotton candy, and more. Washburne's student leadership group sold tickets, advertised, and coordinated the annual event. They also chose this year's charity for the all-school project, Henry’s Heroes Foundation. Henry’s Heroes was started by a former Carleton Washburne student. The foundation aims to raise awareness and funds for Epilepsy research and support programs through art and fun fundraisers with an incredible team of young minds that joined their friend Henry who was fed up with seizures and wanted to find a way to help those with the disease.

It was a little chilly, but the sun was shining bright, and Autumnfest raised over $3000 for Henry’s Heroes.

Welcome to Window to Washburne! Each week, we will be highlighting some of the learning taking place in our classrooms.

Washburne held its annual Club Fair this past week. Interested students were able to learn more about our existing activities and also find out information about how to start a new club. If your child was unable to attend, you can view a list of our current clubs by clicking on this LINK.

We are off to a great start in art class and Yearbook!

In Art & Design students just completed their Name Design projects: students studied typography and created their name in a font of their choice.In Sculpture class, students just completed their Slotted Sculptures and we are moving on to clay this week! Yearbook students have done a great job learning the E-design program and have been busy taking photographs and building their pages.

Basketball season is approaching quickly. In order to participate in travel basketball, all students must be registered and have a medical clearance form or current physical on file at school.

Come join the Thursday mornings “brain-warm-up” with CHESS. A professional instructor will

provide a high-level of instruction which will include not only the basics but expand to opening

theory, tactics and strategies for the middle game, plus cover end game combinations in order to checkmate the opponent’s King. The student will receive instruction, be supervised during game playing periods and receive personal feedback on their play. Chess-Ed is the premiere provider of professional school chess enrichment programs and will be providing this series of classes from 10/13 through 12/22/2022.

Students will also develop life skills such as critical and analytical thinking, decision making,

patience, focus, problem solving, the ability to be gracious in winning and how to turn loss into a learning experience for future success. All these skills lead to greater academic success as well as success throughout life.

As the weather continues to remain pleasant enough to ride a bike to and from school, we want to ensure that we are reinforcing safe practices both amongst our students and amongst resident drivers surrounding our campuses. We remain in collaborative partnership with the Winnetka Police to help enforce safe practices on our roads and sidewalks, and benefit most from that work together when the community helps to do the same. Our principals reviewed bike and pedestrian safety practices with students at the start of the school year; however, we have already received reports of several instances in which a driver or bike rider was either distracted or disregarding safety practices. We ask that you take a moment to review the following information with your family:

• Illinois law prohibits the use of cell phones or other electronic devices while in a school zone, even if it's hands free. It is dangerous and is enforced as a moving violation by the police.

• Please do not use pick up and drop off time to check texts, etc. This potentially endangers others.

• Please remind your students that they should not be using cell phones or other electronic devices while biking.

• Crossing guards are present at busier intersections near our schools to assist with safety. Please respect the authority of the crossing guards and follow their directions

• Please talk to children to ensure that they understand the importance of using caution and following all traffic signals.

• Note that there are not stop signs at every intersection, especially on Oak and Elm Streets, which are heavily used thoroughfares to Crow Island, Skokie and Washburne.

• We STRONGLY recommend that all students who bike, skateboard, or scooter to school wear a helmet regardless of age.

• Students should bike on the sidewalk wherever possible, and be respectful to pedestrians. Also, children are expected to walk their bikes through crosswalks.

• Each elementary school also has specific traffic procedures and parking restrictions that are enforced by police. We encourage you to review these procedures and contact your building administrator if you are unclear.

• The speed limit in our school zones is 20 miles per hour during school days. For the safety of all, please follow the posted speed limit.

• Recommended safe routes to each neighborhood school are as follows:

• Crow Island School

• Greeley School

• Hubbard Woods School
