Mustang News - October 6th, 2023
From The Principal
Happy October! This week we had a wonderful College Fair with over 25 schools representing a variety of post secondary options—thank you to our Counseling department. We also want to celebrate that we earned recognition as a US News and World Report Best High Schools as well as qualifying for the AP Honor Roll. Congratulations to our staff and students for all of their hard work and dedication in earning these accolades! Furthermore, a huge congratulations to our four students who were announced as Commended Students for the National Merit Scholarship Program: Ethan A., Bryan B., Connor C., and Cody K. Also, good luck to our Cross Country team in the league meet this afternoon! Go Stangs! Next week, please remember that Wednesday, October 11th is not a late start day due to PSAT 9 for 9th graders and PSAT NMSQT for 10th and 11th graders (no school for 12th graders). Have a great weekend! Anna Conrad Manitou Springs High School Principal

PSAT/NMSQT Information
Dear Mustang Students and Families,
On Wednesday, October 11, 2023, the high school will have testing for 9th -11th graders starting at 8:05 am (this will NOT be a late start). Seniors will NOT have school on October 11th. 9th grade will take the PSAT 8/9, while Grades 10 and 11 will take the PSAT/NMSQT. Testing for students without accommodations will conclude at 11:30, followed by lunch for students from 11:30-12:00 pm, and students will be dismissed at 12:00. Families may pick up students anytime after testing concludes at 11:30 pm. Please be aware that bus routes will continue at normal time 3:20, but we will have supervision available for students who cannot be picked up until then.
The PSAT 8/9 and PSAT/NMSQT exams give students, families, and our school information regarding where students are in meeting career and college readiness benchmarks. Additionally, the PSAT/ NMSQT enables 11th grade students to be eligible to compete for the National Merit Scholarship.
Research shows that taking PSAT aligned tests in preparation for the SAT decreases stress and increases readiness and scores for students. As part of our career and college readiness work at MSHS, students will continue to take these tests in the fall and spring until April of their junior year when they will take the SAT. The SAT is used by colleges (to include community colleges) all over the country for college acceptance, scholarships, and at times placement into courses. Furthermore, if students earn qualifying scores for both Math and English, the SAT can satisfy the testing element of Colorado’s Menu of Graduation Requirements (which students need to earn in addition to the minimum number of credits to be able to graduate).
Additionally, this year the SAT Suite of Assessments will be taken by ALL students online. Students will be given the opportunity to test their devices through the College Board Student Portal called Bluebook, which is an app downloaded on their device. More information will be shared to students and families the week before testing, and students will be given the opportunity to explore the platform in their advisories. We appreciate your partnership in ensuring that students have their charged devices with them at school on testing day, as well as all other chargers etc. that will support their success on this day.
Thank you in advance for your partnership on this matter and please reach out to us if you have any further questions.
Best,
Jessie Nunley

From The Counseling Department...
The counseling department is working hard to brighten our halls with color and kindness. Stay tuned for new hallway decor as the year continues. Counselors Mrs. Strupp and Ms. Schmuki will begin our 9th grade advisory guidance lessons on our role and graduation requirements on Thursday. We will visit all 9th advisories by the end of next week. Please ask your student about this lesson! A reminder that School Counselors provide all students with Academic, College/Career and Social Emotional support and students can request us via the Ipad in the counseling center. We look forward to meeting with all 9th graders soon!
