McPherson News for May 28, 2023
Minimum Day - 5/26
NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY, MAY 29, IN HONOR OF MEMORIAL DAY
As America celebrates Memorial Day, we pay tribute to those who have given their lives in our nation's wars.
Principal's Message
Hello McPherson Families,
This week, our PTSA is hosting a Spring Book Fair. We will have a Literacy Lunch on the Lawn on Friday, June 2. See the newsletter for details on student lunch times.
Also, we are honoring McPherson student, Sarah Valdivia, with a Caps for the Cure campaign! Please see the newsletter for more details about our Super Hero Sarah and her fight against terminal brain cancer. The "Caps for the Cure" campaign raises awareness and money to find the cure for pediatric brain cancer. Students can wear a cap or wear a giant bow (Sarah's favorite) and donate $1 each day to help find a cure.
In the same spirit, our McPherson Girl Scout troop is also sponsoring a Joy Jar Drive at McPherson. Joy Jar drives provide fun (new) toys and activities for children receiving cancer treatments or for their siblings who are side by side battling with them.
Both of these fundraisers mean a lot to our McPherson community. Sarah Valdivia and her wonderful family are very special, and this is a meaningful way to honor her memory. See the newsletter for more information on returning books to the library, Goodbye Grams, Principal's Coffee and PTSA meeting, 8th grade promotion, and other upcoming dates.
Have a great week Meteors,
Brenna Godsey
Principal

Caps for the Cure & Joy Jar
CAPS FOR CURE - Sarah Valdivia radiated positive energy every time she walked into a room. She was a ray of sunshine. Sarah started Kindergarten at McPherson Magnet in 2019. She was well known for wearing big bows, loving unicorns, and being a good friend. When she was in second grade, Sarah was diagnosed with terminal brain stem cancer on January 26, 2022. Sarah endured three brain surgeries, and two clinical trials during her battle with cancer. Sarah fought with courage, and a positive attitude every step of the way. She gave us the drive to keep searching for a potential cure. She taught us to enjoy every moment, always look for light amidst darkness. She will always be our super hero. We will be showing our support for pediatric brain cancer patients and the need for research to cure this deadly cancer by participating in Caps for the Cure. Students will be allowed to wear a hat for the day and in exchange, the students are asked to donate $1 which will be given to The Cure Starts Now Foundation. Or be like Sarah and wear a big bow.
Caps for the Cure is a fun and easy way to raise much needed funds and awareness for pediatric brain cancer research. McPherson Magnet is partnering with The Cure Starts Now May 29th– June 2nd so no other family has to endure this battle. All students and staff are encouraged to bring in donations May 29 through June 2, and show their support for Sarah and other children by wearing a hat or big bow.
JOY JAR - McPherson Girl Scouts will also have a "Joy Jar" drive to collect toys for kids fighting cancer. A jar will be located in the front office for students and parents to donate toys to Courageous Kids fighting cancer and for their SuperSibs. See flyer attached for what kinds of items we would like to have donated for this very worthy cause.
Adopt a Linkbot!
Our award-winning C-STEM program is looking to to expand the C-STEM program to allow 3rd-5th grade students to have 1:1 access to Linkbots.
Check out UC Davis highlighting our program’s success: https://c-stem.ucdavis.edu/about-us/success/mcpherson-magnet
If you’ve ever had your student come home and talk about C-STEM, Roboblocky or Mr. Miller, you know how excited they are when they get to learn with Linkbots.
The cost to upgrade is $12,000 per grade and we want to bring this program to both the 4th and 5th grade. For every dollar raised from the Adopt a Linkbot campaign, the McPherson Education Foundation and Stanley W. Ekstrom Foundation will match 150% up to the total $24,000 needed to furnish both grades.
Here’s how you can help. Each Robot costs about $370, any family that “Adopts a Linkbot” for $150* will secure matching funding to purchase a Linkbot. For your contribution, an individual Linkbot will be etched the name of your choice**. In addition, a plaque will be added to the classroom with all the donor names and Linkbot names thanking everyone for their contributions. Help us meet our goal of 65 Linkbots and get the full match today!
To donate via Credit Card or Check, please go to https://adopt-a-linkbot.cheddarup.com
To donate via Venmo, please search for our certified charity account @McPhersonFund
*Donations of any amount are welcome, but $150 is needed to Adopt a Linkbot and give it a name. All other donations will be combined to purchase additional Linkbots.
**Name must be approved by McPherson Administration
ELEVO Game of the Week
This week’s games of the week are week are are Ring Toss and Around the World! The teachers will integrate at least one of these games into their sessions this week. While doing so, they will also incorporate a discussion about integrity. Integrity is the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. Having integrity means being honest with yourself and others, and always keeping your word. Integrity is a highly valued trait because it helps us gain others’ trust, but more importantly, it’s what helps you love and respect yourself.
