Department Updates
Library Corner
Once again, it is that time of year! During these remaining days of school, students will continue to visit the library for their weekly Library special class but will not be checking out books. Any library books your child currently has checked out, should be returned to the Butler Library to enable an inventory of the collection to begin.
In accordance with our policy, if any library books are not returned, a bill for the replacement cost of the library book will be issued. Thank you for your support and cooperation!
The Art Pallette
Sixth Grade artists who were at Butler for fifth grade started to learn how to throw pottery on a wheel with hand-over-hand support. This year they progressed to throwing a piece independently focusing on skills like opening the clay and pulling the wall to the desired shape. Wheel throwing clay is very different from the hand building clay construction that first through sixth graders use in art. It takes time and practice to become a skilled potter but the process of using the pottery wheel is very rewarding.
Staying Active in Physical Education
Students in grades 1-6 finished up their movement concepts and performance unit and started their team play and strategy unit this month. Students in 1st and 2nd grade tried cardio drumming and dance, as well as, movement exploration with scooters. Students in grades 3-6 did a stunts and tumbling unit and tried several skills, such as forward and backward rolls, leap frog, headstands and cartwheels. 3rd, 4th and 5th graders have been playing a game called scooter handball to work on throwing and catching skills in game play. 6th grade students just finished a volleyball unit to get them ready to play the teachers at the end of the year. Kindergarten students continued with their manipulative skills unit, which includes exploring with a lot of different equipment (beanbags, hula hoops, deck rings, balls).
Quest
The end of the year is always a busy time in the QUEST room. The rush to complete projects and students asking for one more week to work on their beloved engineering challenges. As we know, all good things must come to an end, and so does QUEST for our sixth-grade students.
For the past six years, the current sixth-grade students have rescued Humpty Dumpty, helped Rapunzel with her failed attempts to leave the tower, coded their way through an 80s arcade, enjoyed the sweet victory of coding their way through Butler's Coding Candyland, participated in Innovation Days, learned the value of collaboration in Minecraft and even learned how to engage in QUEST- like activities from home and with no materials at times.
While this is an abbreviated list, we can confidently say through every challenge the students managed - there were smiles, laughter, and learning along the way. This group of sixth-grade students has shown creativity and excitement for all the crazy ideas we brainstormed together, even the ones that didn't quite turn out the way we hoped.
For their final QUEST project, student teams designed a tiny space for people to enjoy. From movie theaters to sushi bars and haunted houses, each team showed their determination to make their space the best it could be. This was a great project to end their QUEST experience!

3rd Grade Butterfly Release
Third graders at Butler learned about the life cycle of a butterfly as part of their Life Cycles unit in science. At the end of the unit, students had the opportunity to observe and record the growth of caterpillars, then chrysalises, as they developed into butterflies. After several days of observing the butterflies in class, students ventured outside to release their butterflies into their natural habitat during The Great Butterfly Release of 2023, the culminating activity of this fascinating unit!
3rd Grade - Chicks
Third Grade had an “egg-citing” wrap-up to their life cycles unit in science! With a visit from Farmer Tom, a couple of feathered friends, and twenty-four eggs from Quiver Farms last week, third grade classes learned about the proper care of the animals at each stage of their development. Students provided excellent care for the eggs over the next several days resulting in the hatching of all twenty-four healthy (and adorable) chicks this week. Classes had the opportunity to observe and record the chicks’ growth and behaviors, interact with them, and provide care for them until their return to their farm this week.

Students visited stations to learn about colonial clothing and games, to experience the challenges of being a soldier, and to spotlight the importance of Durham boats to the logistics of moving supplies and thousands of soldiers across the river.
Camp America - Sixth Grade Class Trip
This culminating 6th Grade event is one of our major 6th grade events that celebrates their time as Butler Bears for so many years! Students enjoyed a wide variety of special events throughout the camp - including paddle boats, kickball, "indoor" soccer, tennis and more! The staff provided a delicious lunch for the children and the children had a wonderful time!

Patriot's Pen Essay Contest: Butler 6th Grade in Coordination with VFW Post 3258
The Patriot's Pen Essay Contest is an annual nationwide competition for students in grades 6-8, sponsored by the VFW. Students must write a 300-to-400-word essay on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief. Each year, Butler students in 6th grade are encouraged to submit an essay to our local chapter. (Saloni was selected as the overall building winner by the VFW Committee)
