Do you or your child want to learn how to ride a bike? We’ll start with balancing and gliding without pedals or training wheels. Some will learn to pedal in one session, while others may need more practice to reach that final goal.
Join Willamalane; 4J, Bethel and Springfield Safe Routes to School programs; the City of Eugene; the City of Springfield and Shift Community Cycles for this fun event with pedal-powered smoothies, bike checks, information about bike share, and workshops for families and individuals of all ages on biking for transportation.
You don’t need your own bike to participate, but please bring a helmet and bike if you have one. Contact Safe Routes to School at (541) 228-0699 or jack.blashchishen@springfield.k12.or.us with questions or to volunteer.

"I was born and raised in Eugene, and have lived here my whole life. I graduated from Sheldon HS in 1994. For college, I graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in Sociology, then got my Master's degree in Teaching from Pacific University. I have worked for 4j for 21 years, and have been a licensed teacher for 7 years. I've worked all around Lane County in many districts, working as an E. A. for many years, then as a sub, and now as a full time 4th grade teacher.
"I enjoy hiking, biking, rafting, photography, cooking, live music, playing harmonica, and spending time with my two kids, Melvin (11) and Berkeley (8). I love making kids laugh, helping them navigate life, and learning to challenge themselves. I look forward to a great year back at Chavez!"

Greetings, Families!
This last month, we've continue Sources of Strength lessons in each class. It continues to be an honor and a joy to work with your students! Focus areas have included building community through affirmations (self and others; I encourage you to check in with your child about the positive things others had to say about them!) and learning how to make meaningful apologies; continuing to understand how our brains work (we learn about the brainstem, limbic system, and frontal cortex); and practices in self-regulation, including observing our thoughts and emotions. Hence this month's graphic, above.
In March, the amazing Ms. Mariah and I will continue our monthly Conscious Discipline parenting series, this time with a focus on composure. These parent nights are open to all parents/caregivers of Chávez students, and you are welcome whether or not you attended the first one. I hope to see many of you there!
Repeat from last month: did you know that one of our school improvement goals is Attendance, Belonging, & Connection (known as our ABC goal)? In addition to heightened communication and support around attendance, our school teams will be working on ways to measure and strengthen students' and families' sense of belonging and connection in our school community. We will also be working to elevate student voice and ability to co-create. Belonging and a culture of dignity are not only core to our sense of well-being, but research shows they lead to engagement and increased performance and achievement. Please reach out to me if this work interests you as a parent or guardian, and know that we will be making additional efforts to hear from you!
