Conscious Discipline for Parents
Are you curious about Conscious Discipline? Click here for a 45 minute video. You can also learn more at this website: https://consciousdiscipline.com/about/parents/
WHAT IS CONSCIOUS DISCIPLINE? Conscious Discipline is a research-based program that helps adults stay calm enough to see misbehavior and upset as a signal to teach instead of punish. It then provides effective strategies for teaching social-emotional and life skills to children. Building healthy, brain-smart families that help children grow and learn.

Staff Spotlight
Mr. Joe DeRieux, 4th grade teacher
"I was born and raised in Eugene, and have lived here my whole life. I graduated from Sheldon HS in 1994. For college, I graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in Sociology, then got my Master's degree in Teaching from Pacific University. I have worked for 4j for 21 years, and have been a licensed teacher for 7 years. I've worked all around Lane County in many districts, working as an E. A. for many years, then as a sub, and now as a full time 4th grade teacher.
"I enjoy hiking, biking, rafting, photography, cooking, live music, playing harmonica, and spending time with my two kids, Melvin (11) and Berkeley (8). I love making kids laugh, helping them navigate life, and learning to challenge themselves. I look forward to a great year back at Chavez!"

FAMILY CRAFT NIGHT - Thank you to all who attended!
COUNSELING CORNER WITH MS SHANNON
Greetings, Families!
This last month, we've continue Sources of Strength lessons in each class. It continues to be an honor and a joy to work with your students! Focus areas have included building community through affirmations (self and others; I encourage you to check in with your child about the positive things others had to say about them!) and learning how to make meaningful apologies; continuing to understand how our brains work (we learn about the brainstem, limbic system, and frontal cortex); and practices in self-regulation, including observing our thoughts and emotions. Hence this month's graphic, above.
In March, the amazing Ms. Mariah and I will continue our monthly Conscious Discipline parenting series, this time with a focus on composure. These parent nights are open to all parents/caregivers of Chávez students, and you are welcome whether or not you attended the first one. I hope to see many of you there!
Repeat from last month: did you know that one of our school improvement goals is Attendance, Belonging, & Connection (known as our ABC goal)? In addition to heightened communication and support around attendance, our school teams will be working on ways to measure and strengthen students' and families' sense of belonging and connection in our school community. We will also be working to elevate student voice and ability to co-create. Belonging and a culture of dignity are not only core to our sense of well-being, but research shows they lead to engagement and increased performance and achievement. Please reach out to me if this work interests you as a parent or guardian, and know that we will be making additional efforts to hear from you!
Finally, a reminder that any and all families are free to reach out to me via email: sell_s@4j.lane.edu or by phone at 541-790-5383 (direct office line) if you would like to discuss your student or family's needs.
Wishing you well,
Ms. Shannon

ATTENDANCE
Good attendance is a habit that helps your child do well in school.
Kids who are in class at least 90% of the time do better in school.
Kids learn something every day in our classrooms and students make great contributions to their classroom community.
We want every child included in their classroom learning. We value their ideas and potential.
One of our César E Chávez Elementary school-wide goals for this year is having all our students be regular attenders, which means here at school on time at least 90% of school days. We understand that there may be many reasons for student absences. We also know from decades of research that there is a huge academic, social, and future impact on students who are not regular attenders.
To reach this goal, we have started a program called Every Day Matters where we will work with students attending at or below 80%. One of our staff members will meet with the students one-on-one to review their weekly attendance and celebrate their successes with making it to school that week. If your student is identified for this program, you will be contacted directly.
Site Council News
Site Council met on March 1st. Chavez's testing coordinator joined the meeting and discussed curriculum and testing updates. We discussed the regular assessments that take place in the classroom and their importance. We also talked about the interventions in place for test anxiety as well as evaluating students' emotional response to testing and assessments. Curriculum was reviewed as well as learning differences and Easy CBM benchmarks.
The next Site Council meeting is April 5th.
Library Spotlight with Ms. Dyer, Teacher-Librarian
March Chávez Library News
Hello Chávez Families and Friends. This is Ms. Dyer, your Teacher Librarian. This past month in the Chávez Library, we learned about matters of the heart: celebrating the contributions of Black Americans, studying how helpfulness is kindness and how to have a healthy physical heart. Through a collaboration with Ms. Terri’s PE, we discussed how movement, eating well, sleeping enough, and soothing ourselves with music and breath can be of benefit to our heart. We also learned that being kind to others is actually beneficial to our own heart.
Lessons and books this month will included:
Digital Citizenship: What is the power of our words in person and online?
Collaboration with PE and the AMA in support of the Healthy Heart Challenge. Lessons used the Clever Research Apps: Pebble Go and Britannica.
This coming month in March, we will use Beanstack to record our reading to compete in 4Js Read Across America Reading Challenge. Your student will bring home a QR code to log into Clever and then Beanstack. Here are the directions and link to Clever. Your student will bring home the directions on their QR code sheet as well. The goal is for all students to read or be read to 15 minutes a day.
