Hembree Highlights
January 26, 2024
Message from Ms. Lahey
January has certainly been an interesting month for the weather. First, we braved the bitter cold and now we have lots of rain. Due to the inclement weather, we are seeing an increase in the number of carpool students. I have a big favor to ask, if you could please plan for the extra volume of cars so we can get our students in the building on time, that would be great. Our car rider lane closes at 7:35 AM to allow the staff time to transition to their classes to receive students. If you arrive after 7:35 AM, please park and walk your child to the front door. Tardies will begin after 7:40 AM. Thanks for understanding! Sorry, I have another favor. If you are sending in transportation changes, please only send in for the current week. Changes that are sent in too far in advance can get misplaced. We are working hard to ensure all our students get home safely and the correct way. 🙂
How to Help at Home
Hembree is currently a no-homework school, but there are many ways for your child to work at home to benefit his/her learning. Now that we are in the spring semester we are beginning our cumulative review to prepare for the end-of-year state assessments. There are some great resources for students and parents. For students in grades 3-5, please see the link below to access the GADOE resources for the Georgia Milestones assessment. This is a great opportunity to see sample questions.
iReady
Did you know that your child can practice iReady at home? iReady is an interactive software program that targets skills specific to your child. It is available for students in grades K-5. I highly recommend having your child practice iReady from home a few days a week. To access iReady visit the Hembree Springs website and in the middle of the home page click on Classlink. This will take you to iReady and other online resources.
Hembree Springs offers so many ways for you to connect at school. I would love to see you all at some of our events. Thanks for partnering with us to make Hembree such a wonderful place to be. Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Nancy Lahey

From Our Literacy Coach, Mrs. Mizzell
Monitor Meaning: The first step is read to your children at home but make it fun! ALL elementary children should be read to, from picture books to chapter books. Just because your child is in 4th or 5th grade does not mean they are too old to be read to. Take turns reading pages/chapters. While reading to your child, occasionally pause and explain your understanding of what is happing in the story. This modeling will teach children how to think about books on their own, and how to check that they are understanding the story. Ask your children questions about the characters' actions, the events in the story, the underlying message the author wants you to learn, and connections to other texts or experiences. Remember that our Media Center is available for both parents and students to check out books. Looking for additional supports? To check out additional resources, please reach out to Lucy Gilbert, Title I Parent Liaison, gilbertl2@fultonschools.org
Heart Notes of Appreciation
For Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week, please have your student write or draw a note for their homeroom teacher, Specials teachers, and any staff member they like. We encourage you to fill out several notes! We have a Heart Note that your student can use.
You can print a copy here: http://tinyurl.com/mtbwjk4y
Blank copies will also be available outside of the school in a tub marked "Blank Hearts" if you would like to pick up copies.
Please either send the completed hearts to school with your student or return them to the "Completed Hearts" tub outside of the school by Friday, February 2nd.
Thank you for showing your love to our teachers and staff! Please email Ashley Russ with any questions at ashleyruss88@gmail.com.
Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week Signup
In addition to writing heart notes, you can also donate to some of the fun gift baskets our PTA is organizing for giveaways during the week!
You can find the signup listing the items needed here: http://tinyurl.com/332emd6b
Please drop off the giveaway items with the front desk or have your student bring them to school. Write “Teacher Appreciation Giveaway” on the items and we'll try to keep it a surprise! Please turn in all items prior to February 2nd so that we have time to organize the baskets.
No time to shop? Donate directly and we'll use these funds to support additional activities during the week including a luncheon, breakfast, and more. You can donate here: https://hembreespringselementary.memberhub.com/store Be sure to select “Annual Campaign Donation.”
Thank you and we appreciate YOU ALL for the support!
Silent Auction Donations Needed
The PTA is gearing up for its biggest fundraiser of the year -- our silent auction. It's going live beginning of March. And we need your support! Maybe you own a small business, are a creator, teach lessons or have a service you can offer? Do you have season tickets to a venue? A vacation rental, perhaps? Or, you could have awesome connections to some local places. These would all be great things to put before bidders and raise money for a host of important school programs. Get in touch with us and we're happy to discuss! Email Sara Fuchs at sfuchs@gmail.com.
We are also looking for items to go in grade-level baskets that will be featured in the auction. Each grade level is creating a basket again this year for our Silent Auction Fundraiser. This is a wonderful and fun way to contribute to our fundraising goals. Last year, our Auction made just over $4,000 to fund the Teacher Grants program through the PTA! Each grade has a separate signup link, but please feel free to donate to any basket you like.
Any items donated for the basket must be unopened. Please be sure not to include anything that needs to be refrigerated or is perishable within a few days - these baskets will not be auctioned off until March.
If you would like to make a monetary contribution to help with our baskets, please do so here:
https://hembreespringselementary.memberhub.com/store/items/48153
On the donation form, be sure to note that it is for the Silent Auction fundraiser.
Please bring in all donations by Friday, February 16th, labeled with the following:
● Silent Auction Donation
● Your Name and/or Student’s Name
● Grade
● The basket theme the donation is for
We are so grateful for all of your help!
