TECHNOLOGY CAMPUS CHRONICLE
VOL 6 ISSUE 16
PRINCIPAL CORNER
Dear OSES Families,
School is almost halfway over. We hope the first half of the school year gave you and your family the foundations to help guide your student through the remainder of the year. When we return from the Holiday Break, arguably it begins the most important three months of the school year. Teachers and students will be refreshed, everyone knows what is expected of them, and learning should peak.
Please make sure you understand the testing reports that are available for your student. Take time to review the data with them and talk about ways that they can improve weaknesses. Be sure to highlight their strengths. If you need help interpreting the data, please reach out to anyone on campus.
Sincerely,
Michael Singleton
Principal
On a side note. Today was National Ugly Sweater Day. If you participate in this event, please make sure your sweater is clearly ugly. I saw a few today worn by parents and staff that I wasn’t sure were meant to be ugly; so I safely kept my comments to myself. Conversely, I saw a few that were worn as “ugly” that I found beautifully constructed.

Are you frustrated by the length of our carline? We understand! Here are three tips to help reduce the wait time during morning and afternoon carlines.
#1 – Please move your car forward. We constantly remind you to do this because many cars leave unnecessary gaps between themselves and the vehicle in front of them. By eliminating these spaces, we can fit more cars into the carline and make it move faster. It's a simple concept, really. Unfortunately, we've encountered situations where parents refuse to move because their child is still working on homework or eating breakfast, or they simply don't want their child to walk a few extra feet. Others are distracted by their phones or electronic devices and only start paying attention after we've shouted multiple times. These are just a few examples of the challenges we face on a daily basis.
#2 – Especially in the mornings, please ensure your child is prepared to exit the car. They should have their belongings ready and be able to leave the car as soon as they reach the back of the building. Instead of having to open the trunk and gather their things, they could have their bags and lunch on their laps beforehand. Carpooling parents should wait until they reach the very front of the line before stopping to load up, making it easier for other cars to move around them.
#3 – Arriving too early to pick up your children from the club does not expedite the line. In fact, it has the opposite effect. Some parents claim their children do not have club activities, when in fact they do, which holds up the line for parents whose children are ready to be picked up. As parents with children in club wait, the line either moves very slowly or not at all. We have asked parents to enter the line at 3:40, the designated end time for clubs. Coming before this time blocks the entrance for parents picking up early. Additionally, parking and waiting in a line too early does not help move the line along. We understand that time can be tricky, but the slight inconvenience of looping back around is much better than bringing the line to a complete halt.
Curriculum and Testing Updates
All students have taken their assigned FAST (or Star) Reading and Math Progress Monitoring #2 assessments. If your student was absent on his/her assigned assessment date(s), makeup assessments are scheduled for the week of January 9th.
Grades K-2: If you signed up in Renaissance, Star scores were emailed after your student completed the assessment.
Grades 3-6: Student scores will be available through the FDOE Family Portal; you will use the same login information from PM 1.
The FAST AOR will be sent home with your student’s Report Card on 12/22/2023.

THIS WEEK IN GRADES K-6
KINDERGARTEN
Whitaker
In Kindergarten, we are wrapping up our units on Matter, Subtraction, and Health. We have begun our new Social Studies unit about "Being a Good Friend". We are excited to have our annual Snowball Toss next week!
FIRST
Nickerson
This week, Ms. Nickerson’s class completed a lot of exciting activities in preparation for Winter Week! One of our classmates read a story to the class. Their reading skills and fluency are growing by the day!
On Wednesday, the students finished up our science unit on Earth Structures by investigating how volcanic eruptions change the Earth’s surface. Each student made their own volcano then went outside to make it erupt!
All of the classes are excited for our Field Trip to Gatorland December 15 and even more excited for all of the events planned for Winter Week! We have another STEM day coming up next Wednesday!
SECOND
Sonn
Students have enjoyed a wonderful first semester of second grade in Ms. Sonn's class. They are learning and growing so much! Our students work so hard to do their best and to Strive for Excellence! That is one of our ORCAS Core Values here at OSES and the students really show it. Overall, students did quite excellent on the STAR test in both Reading and Math, showing outstanding growth. Good job, class!
Students in 2nd grade participated in a Service-Learning Project to learn about ways to help in our community. They supported a local animal shelter by collecting donations of items for the homeless dogs and cats. Ms. Sonn's class won our grade level contest of which class had the highest participation in the drive! As a result, we will have a popsicle party next week! Thanks for showing "Caring for My Community", another one of our Core Values at Orlando Science Elem.
Semester One is coming to a close. We have made many wonderful memories, such as our fun field trip to see a play and have a picnic, and the fun dress up days, as in the pictures included here.
We have a fun week ahead.. I have invited students in Ms. Sonn's class to do the following next week:
On Wednesday, we will celebrate "Winter Wonderland" and I invite students to wear colors such as light blue and white, or dress in their fancy best. If you want to volunteer to help me transform the room on Tuesday afternoon, please email me!
On Thursday, I will celebrate the first semester of learning with my W.I.N. students! Students may bring a special item to "Show and Tell" in Ms. Sonn's WIN class.
On Friday, Ms. Sonn's class will have Comfy, Cozy Day and students are invited to wear their lounging clothes, or pajamas. They may also bring a small blanket OR stuffed animal on that day.
Ms. Sonn's class is so excited about all we will learn in the rest of the school year, in January through the Spring. If you can support the class in new and fun, educational resources, as well as enrichment items, please consider making a special donation to our ClassFund here https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/ClassFund/Ms-Hailey-Sonn-349?ownCampaign=&utm_campaign=ClassFundDashboard
Thank you, sincerely, to all of the families of my students. Ms. Sonn loves you all very much and I am so grateful to be in your child's life this year. It brings me great joy to help your child learn and grow and become the best possible version of themselves. Thank you always for your support, your kindness, and all you do for your child's education and in support of our classroom. I hope you all have a wonderful, fun, restful vacation. See you in January!!
THIRD
Astacio
This week in Mrs. Astacio’s Class reviewed their F.A.S.T data. Each student looked at their PM1 and PM2 scores and tracked their growth. Each student completed a bar graph and came up with strategies they can use to improve on their final assessment. The students are working so hard in their learning and are doing everything they can to be successful for the remainder of the year!
FOURTH
Baker
This week our fourth graders presented their Florida Projects to their classmates. Students were given several topics to choose from and given the opportunity to choose their own topics for their project. They researched Florida’s history, timelines, maps, animals, famous people, Florida's flag, and topic of choice. Some created interactive Google Slides and video clips. Their projects were incredible!
FIFTH
Saucedo
This week, Mrs. Saucedo’s fifth graders investigated what materials conduct electricity; students worked collaboratively to create electrical circuits and explored static electricity with balloons. We discussed how scientists and engineers study electric charge to find new ways to use energy. Next week, we will begin our research module for the STEM fair project!
Fifth grade OSES families, thank you for supporting our 5th grade Food Drive to help our community and donating to Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida this holiday season!
SPECIALS
O'Connor
This week in STEM was a Wonderful Winter Engineering Week! Kinders created a runaway Gingerbread Person. First and Third graders learned about how snowflakes are formed. First grade created snowflakes with shapes like rhombus and circles, making sure they were each unique and symmetrical. Third grade created platforms to lift snowflakes off the ground to keep them from melting too fast. Fourth and Fifth grade used recycled materials to help Santa- creating a new sleigh or inventing toys.
We are in need of more supplies. If you have any recycling materials at home, please bring them in for the STEM lab. Examples include:
cardboard tubes
small cardboard boxes (cereal or smaller)
cartons of all kinds (milk, egg, etc)
Character Ed- Bagnati
This week in Character Education, Kindergarten and 1st Grade have been discussing and practicing ways they can calm down if they are approaching the red zone of anger. In 2nd Grade, we finished up our self-confidence gumball machine projects. They all look so good! In 3rd Grade, we finished up our bullying murals that we started last week. For 4th Grade, we have been discussing bullying and combating it by practicing using kind words. 5th Grade discussed differences this week! As a reminder, in Character Education next week, students will be watching a movie. An email was sent home last week will all the information. I will resend it in case some have not seen it yet!

During the holiday season, we often hear the traditional song that says "Tis the season to be jolly". This month, our Orlando Science students have been focused on learning about EMPATHY. Empathy means "standing in someone else's shoes". Noticing and responding to the emotions of others is what empathy is all about. Demonstrating empathy is important during every season of life, but let's be intentional to show kindness and love to those around us this holiday season. The calendar below is a tool that you can use at home to encourage kindness and empathy.
Have a great weekend!

Competition Math
Dear Orlando Science Schools Community,
We are thrilled to share the success of the recently organized Central Florida Math Tournament (CFMT), hosted by the Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society at Orlando Science High School. The event took place on Saturday, December 9th, bringing together enthusiastic 4th and 5th-grade students for a day filled with challenging yet enjoyable math competitions.
Our dedicated Mu Alpha Theta members worked diligently to orchestrate a seamlessly executed event, ensuring that everything ran smoothly and adhered to the schedule. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all MAO members who volunteered their time and expertise to make this event possible.
The Central Florida Math Tournament welcomed participants from various schools, and we were delighted to witness the remarkable problem-solving skills displayed by all the students. Congratulations to each participant for their commitment and effort in tackling the challenging math problems presented.
We are proud to recognize the top 20 students in each grade level for their outstanding performance. Additionally, the top 3 students in each grade level were honored with tablets as a token of our appreciation for their exceptional achievements.
This competition not only provided a platform for young minds to showcase their mathematical prowess but also fostered a sense of camaraderie and excitement among the participants. The positive energy and enthusiasm exhibited by the students were truly inspiring.
As we reflect on the success of this year's Central Florida Math Tournament, we express our gratitude to everyone involved—participants, volunteers, and supporters. Your dedication contributed to the event's triumph, and we look forward to seeing everyone again at next year's CFMT.
Once again, congratulations to all the participants, and we extend our best wishes for continued success in their mathematical endeavors.
