School District 57
From the Desk of the Superintendent

December 20, 2023
Dear District 57 Parents/Guardians,
As we approach the holiday season, I want to take a moment to extend my warmest wishes to you and your loved ones. It’s one of my life’s joys to serve as the superintendent of District 57. The festiveness, kindness, and warmth in all our schools during this time of year only add to this joy. May the holiday season bring you love, laughter, and cherished moments with family and friends.
Last night, our Board of Education convened to discuss several important matters that impact our school community. You can watch the video in its entirety here. Below is a brief recap of the key topics covered during the meeting:
Fairview Elementary School's 5th Grade Outdoor Education Trip
Principal Dan Ophus presented the Board with a delightful video capturing the highlights of Fairview Elementary School's 5th-grade trip to the Sunrise Lake Outdoor Education Center in Bartlett this fall. Take a look at the video below - this immersive video showcases the students' engagement at Sunrise Lake and the educational value of these incredible outings. Lions Park 5th graders will participate in their outdoor education at Sunrise Lake later in the school year. We are grateful for Principal Ophus, our D57 parent volunteers, Fairview staff, and the dedicated educators at Sunrise Lake who make these opportunities possible for our students.
Public Hearing on Tax Levy
Jason Kaiz, Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations, led a Public Hearing on the Tax Levy. The tax levy is an annual request to Cook County for funds appropriated from property tax revenue in the coming year. On average, 84% of the District’s revenue comes from property taxes. This session provided a platform for community members to express their thoughts and concerns regarding the proposed tax levy. You can view the Tax Levy segment here. The Board approved the tax levy request, which will now be officially filed with Cook County.
Professional Learning Initiatives
Aaron Wilkins, Assistant Director of Professional Learning, provided an overview of recent accomplishments in staff professional development and work done to improve the District’s New Educator Induction and Mentoring Program. Additionally, Wilkins spoke about exciting plans for the future, including curriculum review and the development of a new 7th/8th grade Media Communications course. So many exciting developments are underway in our Teaching & Learning department. Take a moment to listen to Wilkins and Dr. Kristin Vonder Haar present their recent work to the Board here.
On behalf of the entire school district, I wish you a wonderful holiday break filled with warmth, joy, and relaxation. May you create lasting memories and return in the new year rejuvenated for the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership in fostering a thriving educational community.
In the spirit of education,
Dr. Mary Gorr
