Jackie Robinson Academy Weekly Newsletter 9/16/23
Dear JROB Families!
Happy Hispanic (LatinX) Heritage Month! One of the best parts of being a part of LBUSD is the diversity of cultures at each of its schools. Too often, however, we only scratch the surface in understanding each others' cultures. We celebrate the visible, the food, dress, music, holidays, and arts, but rarely go deeper in exploring and understanding the perspectives, values, assumptions, and thought patterns that are invisible. These unseen aspects of culture are often where misunderstandings, misconceptions, and disagreements lie, and where conversation and dialogue are crucial for growth and empathy.
At Robinson, we have an opportunity to shift our thinking and deepen our understanding because of the diversity within our school community, staff, and teachers. This diversity is a blessing because it helps us engage and interact with different people and builds empathy that is essential for human connection. In my over 19 years in education in diverse communities, I know that these interactions have their ups and downs, but what makes us stronger is the way we dialogue and discuss tough issues to reach a deeper understanding of each other.
At Robinson we strive to create safe spaces where these conversations can occur, and when disagreements happen, we can problem-solve through it. When I talk about educating the whole child and 21st century skills (communication, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration), I think about it in the context of our rich cultural landscape. It is in this context that we strive for a future that is better than the one we live in today. And it is in this context that we need to teach our kids how to have courageous conversations, ask questions, and connect with an open mind. So, the next time your child asks you about something that isn't easily answered in a sentence, try to go deeper than the tip of the iceberg, to the subjects that if kept taboo will only repeat history.
With dolphin pride,
Principal Ngo

Back To School Night - 5:00-6:30 p.m.
Dear Parent/Guardian:
You are cordially invited to visit Jackie Robinson Academy on Thursday, September 21, 2022 at 5:00 p.m. for our annual Back-to-School Night.
The purpose of Back-to-School Night is to engage parents with teachers as they share course content, standards for proficiency and materials to be used in class. We will begin promptly at 5:00 p.m. with the introduction of staff and information from myself.
Following introductions, parents and guardians will visit their child’s class, hear from the teacher, see the classroom and be provided with a brief overview including our commitment to excellence and equity.
Elementary School Families
Teachers will begin with a classroom presentation at approximately 5:10 p.m. with a second session at 6:00 p.m. Each presentation will last approximately 30 minutes and contain the same information. This will provide parents with multiple students to visit more than one class.
Middle School Families
Middle School Class visitations will begin at 5:15 p.m. Parents will follow their child’s schedule and hear from each teacher. Presentations will be brief to allow parents to see each class this evening. Each class period will last 7 minutes with a 5 minute passing period.
Maps will be available this evening. Thursday, September 21 is a minimum school day schedule. Dismissal is at 1:00pm for all students.
Due to limited space availability students are asked not to attend this event. Additionally, there is no supervision for children this evening. Gates on 27th Street and on the Metro side will be open for parents.
