A Moment in History featuring Joseph H. Rainey
Joseph H. Rainey representing South Carolina became the first African American to be sworn into United States House of Representatives on December 12, 1870. He also became the first African American to preside over the United States House of Representatives. Rainey served as a Republican representing South Carolina's 1st District from December 12, 1870 until March 3, 1879. He was born on June 21, 1832 in Georgetown, South Carolina as a slave. His father was allowed to work as a barber while still in slavery. He gave a percentage of his earnings to his owner and was able to save enough to eventually buy his freedom and that of his family.

Teen Driver Safety Program at LHS
LHS has been selected by the MD Department of transportation to receive a free interactive teen driver safety program called ThinkFast Interactive.
All associated costs for this (1) hour assembly are sponsored/ paid for by Maryland Department of Transportation. This program is a comprehensive and interactive ed-session on everything that relates to teen drivers in our state. The valuable awareness content consists of Maryland's rules, regulations, penalties, GDL, along with a heavy dose of distracted driving messaging. Up to 600 students are able to simultaneously engage with our program throughout the entire (1) hour assembly via their multi-digit wireless program controllers.
The optional assembly will take place on February 22nd at 9am in the LHS Auditorium. All LHS student drivers are invited and encouraged to attend. The length of this program is one hour.
Please visit ThinkFast Interactive for information about the program.

- Naviance for 11th graders: using the Naviance functions for college exploration and college applications, and dual enrollment opportunities.
- Registration at LHS: courses available, how students are recommended for courses, graduation requirements, Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center opportunities, and the application process and timeline.

In-School SAT for all SMCPS Juniors - March 22
SMCPS will administer the In-School SAT, free of charge, on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 to all Juniors.
To prepare for your exam, all students are encouraged to create a College Board account. If they have not already done so, you can do so here, then link your account to Khan Academy for additional practice.
Once you have logged in to your account, you can view your October 2022 PSAT scores and link them to Khan Academy (Link Below) for SAT Prep.
Why should juniors take the SAT?
SAT scores may be required for admissions.
Strong scores may help your admissions chances.
Studies show students who take SAT a second time score higher than students who take test only once.
May be required for scholarships, transfers and special programs.
Scholarships may require scores.
