A Message from Superintendent Tom Reusser
Wow, can you believe it’s 2024?
After reflecting on the past year in December, January is the time I like to look forward to the future. We have so many wonderful things happening this year at Sutter County Superintendent of Schools. Some of those include a new Cosmetology building. We relocated the program to 950 Tharp Road, Suite 1100 in Yuba City. This larger, brighter and updated facility will be a place where students will continue getting the best education from highly qualified instructors, which will prepare them for passing the state licensing exam. Our brand new salon floor will be open to the public! Clients can call to make an appointment with one of our students for haircuts, highlights, blow outs and more.
We have several of our other programs beginning this year including Dental Assisting, Certified Nursing Assisting, Phlebotomy and Medical Assisting. We have had thousands of students go through our programs over the years, with several finding success in their industries. We are thrilled to be able to continue offering these courses and helping those in our community thrive.
Lastly, we are incredibly proud of starting Conrad’s Closet at Shady Creek Outdoor School. We have hundreds, upon thousands of students who visit our outdoor school every year who are sometimes unprepared or don’t have the means to bring everything needed to stay at camp. Through donations to Conrad’s Closet, we will be able to provide students with jackets, clothes, toiletries and much more. With that, I would like to say a big thank you to those who have donated and helped our students have a wonderful experience at Shady Creek.
2023 was a great year for SCSOS, but I know 2024 will be even better. Cheers to the new year!

Congratulations on Retirement!
Lee Anne Martin retires today, January 5, 2024
Lee Anne Martin who has served at SCSOS for the past nine years is retiring. She came to us from Butte Vista School at YCUSD where she served since 1996. Her career has spanned kindergarten through second grade as YCUSD as well as the Adult Transition Program here at SCSOS. She had to go back to college to get her Mod/Severe Credential in order to teach at ATP. As a teacher for ATP, Lee Anne felt that she could support both parents and students because she had been on both sides.
Lee Anne will miss the students and staff as she transitions into retirement. "They are my kids," she said. "I will miss being able to talk to them every day about what's going on in their lives." She said that her staff has been amazing; she couldn't have done her job without their support.
Lee Anne plans to spend time with her grown children and grandchildren now that she is retired. She and her husband, Monty enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking and water sports and plan to travel to Hawaii this spring. She enjoys her little dog, Ollie who goes everywhere with them.
Lee Anne said it has been such an honor to serve at Sutter County Superintendent of Schools. She said the commute was not easy, but once she got to work she had so much fun with students and staff. She also said that Sutter County isn't just a workplace, but a family.
"My students learned that having fun and learning go hand in hand," she said "My classroom was about laughter and learning."
Bryan Statter will be taking over Lee Anne's position as the ATP teacher beginning on January 8.
SCSOS will miss Lee Anne and we wish her the best in her retirement.
Shady Creek Outdoor School
Message from Shady Creek Director, Christopher Little
“I am what I am and that’s all that I am.” – Popeye
"Happy New Year from Shady Creek! All of us at camp are so excited for the New Year upon us, but there is so much to do as we gear up for our biggest year EVER! You might be saying, 'Wait, didn’t you say that last year, and the year before?' You’re correct, I most definitely did and I was right! That’s why I know without a shadow of a doubt, this year is destined for greatness above and beyond my wildest dreams.
December brought us some incredible weeks of outdoor education at Shady Creek. We were blessed to serve all of the 6th graders of Corning Unified School District and 5th & 6th graders from Sierra Elementary out of Rocklin. When an entire school or district take over camp, it’s truly a sight to behold. It’s the type of experience that really brings a community together and the impact is felt for months if not years to follow. Real life connection is priceless. I believe that is at the core of what we offer to all who come through our gates: real connections.
In the photos provided in the link below, you will see a few from our annual Holiday Gathering titled, 'Thanksmakuh.' This year’s Thanksmakuh had over 100 guests, which is a direct result of having the largest staff ever. What a beautiful bunch of people! Stuffed Animal Olympic competitors, Twin Time and Family Christmas photo’s also made the final cut. But the real treasure is THE LETTERS! One from a legendary visiting nurse, multiple student letters from December and just for extra sweetness, a vintage reserve letter addressed to me and Quail. It’s one that warms the heart no matter what the weather is outside!
Story Time
As an adult the holidays are a time that I look forward to, but as a young child and teen I dreaded them. Between custody battles and then to living in poverty, my twin brother, Jason, and I would try to find anything positive to latch onto. That’s why I loved being raised in a church, there was always something being offered. Every year our church put on a MEGA holiday production and Jason and I always found ways to join in. Long story short, I was given a huge role that involved singing a vocal solo at the climax of the year’s show. For anyone that’s ever heard my voice, it’s not what you want to hear in any sort of musical production. It’s a voice only kids love! The big night came and of all the people in the world, the only person I wanted to impress was my Grandma. For those who have been following, my Grandma was my world as a child, my rock and shelter. When my blockbuster moment came, I sang my heart out, but there were no angels celebrating (they probably were in shock that I was given this part). Except one angel was on a mission: my Grandma. When she heard that first gloriously off key note, she flew from her seat directly to the sound engineer and with a fierce look of death on her face she shouted, 'Here’s a $20. Please, for the love of God, turn off his microphone.' The sound engineer did as instructed and with that, the night was saved. Well, at least that night. There were five more performances for Grandma to come.
Big love to you all! BOOMSHAKALAKA!
"Conrad’s Closet, Shady Creek’s newest resource is ready for your donations. Already, in its first few weeks of operation, they have helped so many students help fill a need while at camp. Thousands of students will visit Shady Creek this season and not all always have what they need to spend the week away from home. Please consider a donation to this amazing program! I am happy to pick up items from you if you are unable to drop off. Boomshakalaka!"
