SMCPS Regulations: Dress Code
Parents and Guardians,
I am respectfully asking for your support and assistance. We are seeing attire that is not aligned with the SMCPS regulations for dress code. Students are wearing blankets and pajamas as well as clothing that exposes body parts that are supposed to be covered with an opaque material (fabric that is not see-through). Although students are permitted to wear hats, students are now wearing multiple hats at a time. We are seeing baseball hats AND hoodies over top of the baseball hat. This does not allow us to identify students. Students should wear only one hat. We are trying to create an environment conducive to learning. I respectfully ask that you discuss these expectations with your child(ren). We would like to avoid calling home for dress code violations. Please take a few minutes to review the county dress code regulations. Thank you in advance.
Standards for appropriate attire and accessories shall include the following:
- Students must wear clothing that covers certain body parts. Clothes must be worn in a way such that the chest, midriff, pelvic/groin area, and buttocks are covered with opaque material.
- Clothing displaying or suggesting profanity; sexual activity through graphic images, words, or innuendos; weapons; drugs/alcohol or drug paraphernalia; violence; or tobacco products may not be worn, visible, or displayed.
- Clothing with identifiable gang/crew representation or paraphernalia may not be worn, visible, or displayed.
- Symbols or messages generally accepted to promote intolerance, hate, racial slurs (for example Confederate flag, swastika, Ku Klux Klan or KKK) may not be worn, visible, or displayed.
- Head coverings may only be worn indoors so long as the student's face is visible and it does not interfere with instruction or student safety.
- Shoes must be worn that are safe for all activities.
- Official St. Mary's County Public Schools’ athletic uniforms may be allowed at the discretion of the coach and school administrator.
- Student dress for school-sponsored activities must be in compliance with the Student Dress Code.

The Book Fair Is Coming
Mark your calendars and get ready for some fun! We are hosting an online book fair! Book Fair Dates: November 1-November 14.
Here are some highlights:
• Quality, ultra-readable books! Our partner for this online book fair is Junior Library Guild. JLG is an elite book-selection service that until now has only been available to librarians. Over 40,000 new books for children and young adults are published annually, and JLG selects only the top 3% for its collection – so you KNOW these books are going to be good! Most titles in our book fair will be hardcover, first-edition books with library-quality binding.
• Shop from the comfort and safety of home! With health concerns and social-distancing requirements, this online fair is the perfect way to find great books from the safety of your home. And you can shop using any major debit or credit card – no cash needed!
• Direct-to-home delivery! Every purchase from our online book fair will be delivered straight to your door. You can also shop teacher wish lists, and those books will be shipped directly to the school. Easy peasy!
• FREE shipping for all orders over $30, and books ordered from teacher wish lists ALWAYS ship for free!
• Supports our school! Our library receives a percentage of every book fair purchase, and we can use these funds raised as JLG credit to add more quality books to our collection. If we make $1,000 or more in total sales, we have the option to receive a cash reward instead. Your support is so appreciated! Keep an eye out for more information about our online JLG@Home Book Fair.
Thank you in advance for supporting Margaret Brent Middle School and helping us put quality books in the hands of your young readers!
