• 2nd-year MCHer Delaine Anderson received the Outstanding Student of the Year Award from the American Public Health Association’s (APHA) Council of Affiliates. This award recognizes an undergraduate or graduate student actively pursuing a field of study with a focus on public health and has had significant involvement in state, regional, and /or national public health affiliate/association while a student. Delaine is very active in the Minnesota Public Health Association (MPHA) and co-leads MPHA’s Membership and Communications Committee.

• Dr. Rachel Hardeman, Ph.D., MPH, has accepted an invitation to join the Advisory Committee to the Director (ACD) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The panel committee members include people with expertise in areas pertinent to the CDC mission, such as public health, health equity, medical education, industry, healthcare delivery, health policy, preventive medicine, allied fields, and communication.

Congratulations, Delaine and Dr. Hardeman, on these well-deserved nominations and awards!

#UMNMCH alumni Abby Fink (MPH 2021) wrote this reflection about her deployment with the Title V Needs Assessment Team at the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH).

In early October, the UMN-TC and the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) MCH Student Interest Groups hosted a weeklong virtual screening of the Emmy Award-winning documentary Belly of the Beast, as well as a panel discussing reproductive injustice and human rights violations within the carceral system.

Join the Center for MCH as we explore the concept of reproductive justice–from inception to action. Dr. Jaime Slaughter-Acey and Dr. Rachel Hardeman will be your guides during five virtual book club sessions throughout the 2021-2022 academic year, each session touching on a different aspect of reproductive justice.

The book selection for the first session will be announced on November 8th, 2021 CDT via email and our Center page, with Club dates and times forthcoming. Lots of supplementary materials and media will be provided for those ready to make a deep dive. Presented by Dr. Stuart Grande from the University of Minnesota’s Division of Health Policy and Management, participants at our first Mini-Lab training of the year will explore citizen research and learn how co-producing research with communities can advance and challenge research for the better. Participants will also learn about the main facilitators and barriers of such research with community members who have lived experiences of housing instability. This three-part series of online workshops, hosted by the UMN-TC Earl E. Bakken Center for Spirituality and Healing, includes mind and body-based exercises to help participants better understand their experiences of situations that create agitation, upset, and a sense that there is something wrong. Topics include: Supportive Practice to Restore Calm, Supportive Practice to Stabilize Mood, and Supportive Practice for Focus. There is a suggested registration fee of $15 per workshop; however, sliding scale fees are available.

In 2019, Washington County Public Health and Environment completed their most recent iteration of the Adult Health Survey. Conducted every four to six years, this survey seeks to better understand the health concerns of Washington County adults, including topic areas such as chronic disease, mental health, healthcare access, lifestyle and behaviors, and community and economic conditions. The County ranks consistently among the top five healthiest counties in Minnesota. But is everyone reaching their full potential? This presentation, given by Smita Rakshit, will provide a closer look at health disparities.

This Critical Conversation, presented by Dr. Crystal Hayes, Ph.D., MSW, is designed to be an interactive discussion to help you understand the meaning and history of reproductive justice, the legacy of reproductive oppression, and the ways in which our society is organized and designed to make reproductive choices for people who have historically been marginalized, particularly BIPOC people. The question, “When was a reproductive choice made for you?” is personal. It is meant to get you thinking about the application of a reproductive justice framework to your own personal life and experiences, but more importantly—to your life’s work.

Drawing on fieldwork with Indigenous women and mothers in two northern and remote communities in Quebec, Canada, Dr. Zoua Vang, Ph.D., will examine Indigenous women’s experiences with perinatal depression and access to mental health services. The results reveal multiple barriers to mental health service use in northern and remote communities, including mental health protocols that are perceived as punitive and the close coupling of child protection services and mental health services which acts as a strong deterrent to help-seeking.

• UMN SPH Advances Magazine (Fall 2021) “Becoming an Antiracist School” Dr. Rachel Hardeman, MCH 2nd year student Delaine Anderson, and more UMN faculty are featured in this year's Fall 2021 SPH Advances issue on how they define an antiracist community and how they can support the school’s five-year strategic plan for antiracism.

Each month, we highlight MCH Leadership competencies for our students to learn more about. Ethical behavior in our MCH workforce includes conduct associated with generally accepted principles and values, including leadership ethics such as honesty, cultural competency, and responsibility.

The Maternal and Child Health National Network (MCH NN) is an action-oriented network. The purpose of the MCH NN is to connect early MCH professionals, students, and alumni in order to share information, experiences, and opportunities through various social media platforms. Early Development and Child Welfare is a new podcast series co-created by the UMN's Center for Early Education and Development (CEED) and the Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare (CASCW). This series of 10 episodes cover a range of important aspects of child development and child welfare work.

Attend the 2021 CityMatCH Leadership and MCH Epidemiology Conference. The CityMatCH Urban MCH Leadership Conference and the MCH Epidemiology Conference join forces on a biennial basis. This virtual conference convenes a diverse audience of more than 700 professionals from across the U.S. and globally, all working to improve the health of women, children, and families.

The aims of the Center include providing continuing professional education in maternal and child health (MCH) and support for students in online and in-person MCH graduate programs at the University of Minnesota. Center and MCH Program faculty are involved in research and training in infant and child health, adolescent health, family health, health disparities, reproductive health, and women's health.
