Center Announcements
1. Center Congratulations!
- 2nd-year MCHer Delaine Anderson received the Outstanding Student of the Year Award from the American Public Health Association’s (APHA) Council of Affiliates. This award recognizes an undergraduate or graduate student actively pursuing a field of study with a focus on public health and has had significant involvement in state, regional, and /or national public health affiliate/association while a student. Delaine is very active in the Minnesota Public Health Association (MPHA) and co-leads MPHA’s Membership and Communications Committee.
- Dr. Rachel Hardeman, Ph.D., MPH, has accepted an invitation to join the Advisory Committee to the Director (ACD) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The panel committee members include people with expertise in areas pertinent to the CDC mission, such as public health, health equity, medical education, industry, healthcare delivery, health policy, preventive medicine, allied fields, and communication.
Congratulations, Delaine and Dr. Hardeman, on these well-deserved nominations and awards!
2. Alumni Spotlight: How did Abby Fink help develop data biographies through her deployment with MDH?

4. Belly of the Beast Panel Recording
In early October, the UMN-TC and the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) MCH Student Interest Groups hosted a weeklong virtual screening of the Emmy Award-winning documentary Belly of the Beast, as well as a panel discussing reproductive injustice and human rights violations within the carceral system.
5. Reproductive Justice Book Club
Join the Center for MCH as we explore the concept of reproductive justice–from inception to action. Dr. Jaime Slaughter-Acey and Dr. Rachel Hardeman will be your guides during five virtual book club sessions throughout the 2021-2022 academic year, each session touching on a different aspect of reproductive justice.
The book selection for the first session will be announced on November 8th, 2021 CDT via email and our Center page, with Club dates and times forthcoming. Lots of supplementary materials and media will be provided for those ready to make a deep dive. The Reproductive Justice Book Club is open to anyone who wants to attend, so tell your friends and colleagues! Contact Erin at mch@umn.edu with questions.

6. Qualitative Mini-Lab: Introduction to Citizen Research

Presented by Dr. Stuart Grande from the University of Minnesota’s Division of Health Policy and Management, participants at our first Mini-Lab training of the year will explore citizen research and learn how co-producing research with communities can advance and challenge research for the better. Participants will also learn about the main facilitators and barriers of such research with community members who have lived experiences of housing instability. 7. Maternal and Child Health Interest Group: Data, Data, Data Panel

Join the Maternal and Child Health Interest Group (MCHIG) in a panel discussing all things quantitative data! This panel includes Marta Shore, a Biostatistics Lecturer, and Delaine Anderson, a second-year MCH student. This panel is part of a series called ‘Diving Into Research' which aims to empower first-year graduate students in gaining confidence to conduct research.
8. Maternal and Child Health Interest Group (MCHIG) Coffee Chat

MCHIG was created for students to have a space to discuss MCH related topics and issues and get involved with community service. Any University of Minnesota undergraduate or graduate student with interest in MCH is welcome to join!
9. Rights-Based Approach in Child Health: An International Children's Day Panel Discussion

10. Mind-Body Tools to Manage Anxiety and Difficult Emotions Virtual

This three-part series of online workshops, hosted by the UMN-TC Earl E. Bakken Center for Spirituality and Healing, includes mind and body-based exercises to help participants better understand their experiences of situations that create agitation, upset, and a sense that there is something wrong. Topics include: Supportive Practice to Restore Calm, Supportive Practice to Stabilize Mood, and Supportive Practice for Focus. There is a suggested registration fee of $15 per workshop; however, sliding scale fees are available.
11. Minnesota Public Health Association: 2021-2022 Public Health Matters Policy Forum Series

In this first forum of the series, “Local and Global: What can we learn from each other,” panelists and participants will explore the local and global challenges of meeting the educational needs of our population across the lifespan.
12. Support through Separation: Helping Parents and their Young Children Through Separation, Loss, and Reunification
November 9th, 2021 | 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM CDT
Dr. Rebecca Shlafer will give a keynote presentation on how to support children’s behaviors and emotions when separations are short-term (e.g., court-ordered visits), as well as when they are more permanent (e.g., termination of parental rights).
13. Webinar: Smita Rakshit on Washington County Adult Health Survey

In 2019, Washington County Public Health and Environment completed their most recent iteration of the Adult Health Survey. Conducted every four to six years, this survey seeks to better understand the health concerns of Washington County adults, including topic areas such as chronic disease, mental health, healthcare access, lifestyle and behaviors, and community and economic conditions. The County ranks consistently among the top five healthiest counties in Minnesota. But is everyone reaching their full potential? This presentation, given by Smita Rakshit, will provide a closer look at health disparities.
14. Black Women Be(en) Knowing: A Critical Conversation about Reproductive Justice

This Critical Conversation, presented by Dr. Crystal Hayes, Ph.D., MSW, is designed to be an interactive discussion to help you understand the meaning and history of reproductive justice, the legacy of reproductive oppression, and the ways in which our society is organized and designed to make reproductive choices for people who have historically been marginalized, particularly BIPOC people. The question, “When was a reproductive choice made for you?” is personal. It is meant to get you thinking about the application of a reproductive justice framework to your own personal life and experiences, but more importantly—to your life’s work.
15. Cultural Safety Considerations in Indigenous Maternal Mental Health Services

Drawing on fieldwork with Indigenous women and mothers in two northern and remote communities in Quebec, Canada, Dr. Zoua Vang, Ph.D., will examine Indigenous women’s experiences with perinatal depression and access to mental health services. The results reveal multiple barriers to mental health service use in northern and remote communities, including mental health protocols that are perceived as punitive and the close coupling of child protection services and mental health services which acts as a strong deterrent to help-seeking.

UMN News (2021, October 19) “Statewide research program to address impact of racism on cardiovascular health inequities” and Star Tribune (2021, October 19) “University of Minnesota, Mayo win $19.4 million grant to study heart health disparities” Dr. Rachel Hardeman and colleagues are featured in UMN News on the new research center, The Center for Chronic Disease Reduction and Equity Promotion Across Minnesota (C2DREAM), led by the UMN and Mayo Clinic.
UMN SPH Advances Magazine (Fall 2021) “In Support of Incarcerated Mothers: A New Chance for a Healthier Start” Dr. Rebecca Shlafer and colleagues featured in this year's Fall 2021 UMN Advances issue for their work with incarcerated pregnant mothers and their influence on the passage of the Healthy Start Act into law.
- UMN SPH Advances Magazine (Fall 2021) “Becoming an Antiracist School” Dr. Rachel Hardeman, MCH 2nd year student Delaine Anderson, and more UMN faculty are featured in this year's Fall 2021 SPH Advances issue on how they define an antiracist community and how they can support the school’s five-year strategic plan for antiracism.

Each month, we highlight MCH Leadership competencies for our students to learn more about. Ethical behavior in our MCH workforce includes conduct associated with generally accepted principles and values, including leadership ethics such as honesty, cultural competency, and responsibility.

18. Board Member: MCH National Network

The Maternal and Child Health National Network (MCH NN) is an action-oriented network. The purpose of the MCH NN is to connect early MCH professionals, students, and alumni in order to share information, experiences, and opportunities through various social media platforms. The MCH NN aims to connect and strengthen advocacy relating to MCH as well as enhance leadership and team-building skills. Applications are currently open for the January-June 2022 Leadership Board! 19. Podcast: Applying a Cultural Lens to Child Welfare Work
Early Development and Child Welfare is a new podcast series co-created by the UMN's Center for Early Education and Development (CEED) and the Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare (CASCW). This series of 10 episodes cover a range of important aspects of child development and child welfare work.
20. Webinar: Examining the Roots–Upstream Approaches to Data, Programs, and Policies in MCH
Attend the 2021 CityMatCH Leadership and MCH Epidemiology Conference. The CityMatCH Urban MCH Leadership Conference and the MCH Epidemiology Conference join forces on a biennial basis. This virtual conference convenes a diverse audience of more than 700 professionals from across the U.S. and globally, all working to improve the health of women, children, and families.
The aims of the Center include providing continuing professional education in maternal and child health (MCH) and support for students in online and in-person MCH graduate programs at the University of Minnesota. Center and MCH Program faculty are involved in research and training in infant and child health, adolescent health, family health, health disparities, reproductive health, and women's health.
