Message From Principal Engdall
Greeting Shaw Montessori Community,
It’s that time of year again! Yes! Girl Scout cookie time and Tax Credit Donation time!
Please review the attached power point to see how tax credit benefits all of our students.
You will also find our Girl Scout troops selling cookies before and after school this month on campus. Make sure you pick up a few boxes from them.
Wishing you the very best,
Principal Engdall

Message From Nurse Rose
Covid Cases this week:
Students/staff: 13
Family members: 10
Note From the Nurse: This week our Covid 19 positives are way down from last week. No cases were reported at all on Friday which is the first day that has happened for over 2 weeks. Our pooled testing continues every Tuesday morning. This week we tested 20 pools/ 153 students and staff. On Wednesday, we individually tested 52 students/staff and sent 1 person home. If you would like to sign your student up for our weekly testing, you can use the following link: http://testcenter.concentricbyginkgo.com//minor-consent
Access Code: APC54P
We continue to have students out due to close contact with family members who tested positive. District Policy states that close contacts need to quarantine for 10 days but have the option of getting Covid tested on Day 6 or 7 and may return to school on Day 8 with a negative test that needs to be turned in to the nurse. Also, students/staff who are fully vaccinated, which is considered to be 2 doses, do not have to quarantine as long as they have no symptoms. For a student/staff member who tests positive, they will need to be out 10 days with Day 1 being start of symptoms. If student/staff do not have any symptoms, Day 1 is the day the test was taken. I will always call parents to go over return dates when a close contact or a positive case is reported to Ms. Teresa when reporting an absence. Please call me with any questions/concerns at 602.257.3900, thanks! Rose RN.

Assessment Updates
Many of our students have successfully completed the winter iReady benchmark. If your child was absent, they will have an opportunity to make up the assessment in class when they return.
Please save the date: Monday, January 31st, 2022 all 3rd to 8th-grade students will take the new AASA (formerly AzMERIT) Writing Field Test. Students will be required to read or listen to one passage and plan and write a typed essay response. We recommend your student has headphones for this assessment. For students who are not in attendance on Monday, January 31st, we will offer a make-up test the following Monday, February 7th. Please reach out to your student’s teacher with any questions you may have.

Office Reminder
Attendance Phone Line: 602-257-3914
You are required to call the school office and report any absences. Please call as soon as you know your child will not be at school. The attendance line is available 24/7. Leave a message- don’t forget to be specific about the reason your child is not going to be at school. If they are not feeling well, list symptoms. Our school Nurse Ms. Rosemary has been calling and following up with families about child illness throughout the day when she has time. It is a courtesy to notify your child’s teacher about absences and a requirement to notify the school office.
Thank you!
SIBLING ENROLLMENT:
Have a 3 or 4 year old that you’d like to enroll for the 22/23 school year? Please fill out the sibling application here and submit to Christina.Girard@phxschools.org or you can bring your sibling application to the office. Sibling applications are due no later than March 31st.

Message From Laura Hildwein
Feeling stressed and overwhelmed?
Feeling overwhelmed and stressed can lead to feeling anxious, fatigued and irritable. You might experience changes in sleep, appetite and overall health. As we continue to struggle with the pandemic and the many stressors it can bring into our life, we may become numb and tired.
It is important to try and mitigate our level of stress on a daily basis. Here are a few ways to do that.
-Take care of your physical health (eating healthy, going for a walk, getting enough sleep)
-Stay connected (have lunch with a co-worker, talk to a friend, play a game with your kids)
-Stay in the present moment. Try not to think ahead to all the what ifs and enjoy this moment
-Deep breathing exercises
-Exercise- even a 5-10 minute walk will help
-Aromatherapy- a diffuser, candle or bubble bath
-Journaling-write down your feelings, remember to identify some of the positive things you see and experience each day
-Tackle 1 task at a time- make a list and check off a task when it is completed
-Talk to a mental health professional-if needed reach out for help

Garden Update
Link to sign up: https://signup.com/go/GSKcQci
Greetings!
Our worms arrived this week! We put 2,000 red wigglers in our worm habitats in the garden. These compost worms will break down the organic material into healthy worm poo (CASTINGS). We spoke about the unique digestive system of the worm. It is very similar to birds. Quiz your children and see if they can explain the difference between worm and human digestive systems.
We tried welcoming two new chickens into our coop this week without success. Our red hens were not very friendly to the new chickens so they went back to Maya’s Farm (thanks anyway Maya). Unfortunately, the increasing demand for eggs will not be met with more production.
There will be another market table next week! Bring your petty cash to Monroe St. We will have eggs, bouquets, herbs and vegetables for sale. In the spring, we will begin hosting two tables, one on Monroe St and one in front of primary pickup. Your time is coming primary parents!
Our parent workday is approaching! The date is 01/29 from 9 AM until 2 PM. Please bring a shovel and/or wheelbarrow if you have one. Here is the parent volunteer link: https://signup.com/go/GSKcQci
Our tree planting has been placed on hold until February/March. Please be wary of the holes on campus. We don’t want any accidents.
We can always use coffee grounds and can donations. Please make sure the coffee grounds have been brewed. You can pick up used grounds at Starbucks for free. NO MORE SINGLE BREW PLASTIC CUPS PLEASE! We also prefer that your cans are uncrushed (the small kiddos love this task), however, we will accept crushed cans as well. You can drop them off at the table outside of the front office entrance.
We will take your eggshells as well! The worms love them!
We still need your Home Depot donations. Even $25.00 is a huge contribution. Here’s the link to Home Depot gift cards: https://www.homedepot.com/c/Gift_Cards
Here’s my email: james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org
Thanks to Paul Mcilroy for the Home Depot card! You’re awesome!

Shaw Little Free Library Restoration
A couple of years ago some of our Shaw Girl Scout Troops banded together to install a Little Free Library on campus that is accessible to our school community. We are now planning a restoration project for our library box at the next Outdoor Parent Workday happening on Sat the 29th and are looking for a savy woodworking parent or volunteer who may be able to help us with planning, guidance and some assistance to show the library some TLC. 💚📚 If you are available or if you know someone who can help will you please have them reach out to Troop Leader Joy to coordinate. Troop #6591 will purchase needed materials/supplies for the project so your experience and some time (maybe a couple tools you most likely already have) is all that we are needing. And remember it is cookie season so if you have a favorite I'm sure we will have you covered with work snacks!

Thank you!
