LOOK WHAT'S HAPPENING AT CEEC!

Nadia Kistas from Morocco has obtained her citizenship! Nadia stated, "I put all my effort into the project and passed the Naturalization test in November. On January 11 in Philadelphia I was sworn in and received my certificate as a Naturalized Citizen. There were at least 20-30 others in my group. Because of COVID there was no party, but I will always remember this day. My heart was flying!”

A huge CONGRATULATIONS goes out to you Nadia! Thank you for allowing us to be a part of this amazing accomplishment.

VIRTUAL OPEN HOUSE

Obtain information on our GED, ESL, and Adult Basic Education programs at the Claymont Community Center. Sessions are held every 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month. Registration is required. The Hudson Site would like to extend a warm welcome to Carmai Williams and Amrit Kaur. Both students enrolled in the GED® program earlier this month. Carmai has been a wonderful addition to the class and is off to a great start. She is studying and working hard towards taking the GED® Pre-Test in RLA. In addition, Amrit has shown much improvement in her technology skills since enrolling. Both students have perfect attendance thus far!

INSTRUCTION IN ACTION

As the Hudson students watched the 2021 Virtual Presidential Inauguration for President Joseph R. Biden on January 20, they quickly discovered that our social studies lessons directly tied them to our nation's history. Students discussed former and past presidents who attended the inauguration including George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama. Lessons also allowed them to respectfully discuss and write about current political issues including racism, policing, COVID-19 vaccine, and the importance of integrity, peaceful demonstrations and equality that is needed in order to keep our nation going forward.

Students agreed that this was the best presidential Inauguration because it kept Americans safe and for some, this was the first time ever witnessing a new President being sworn in. History was made yet again with our first Black Vice-President Kamala Harris.

For Hudson, the Pledge of Allegiance and Star-Spangled Banner came to life and now our Civics Unit Lessons are symbols and reminders of our democratic duty which is why we hold America so dear as our country of patriotic freedom.

This month, the Family Literacy Program began a new series of Financial Literacy Workshops led by Ms. Janet Clarke-Peterkin. Ms. Peterkin works at the Stubbs Dual Generation Center as a STAND BY ME coach. She meets with clients individually to develop financial goals and healthy financial habits. On January 27, she facilitated a ZOOM meeting to introduce Family Literacy students to the program. Over the next few months, Ms. Peterkin will be leading various online workshops such as budgeting and credit reconciliation.

HYBRID LEARNING HAS BEGUN!

On January 21, 2021 we held our first hybrid learning class for all of our scheduled programs (ESL, ABE, Groves, and Groves In-School). Students participated both virtually and face-to-face. It was great to see Glasgow Adult Education staff and students! Check out some of the pictures that were taken below!

NEW CASTLE COUNTY LEARNING CENTER SHINING STARS

Since the pandemic began, a core group of devoted NCCLC students has continued to push forward with their quest to earn their GED® credentials. The grit and determination our students have shown as we’ve all been thrown into this brave new world of virtual learning, is nothing short of amazing.

Whether its attempting an on-line proctored “at home” GED® Test, wrestling with unreliable internet and technology, or bravely reaching out to a teacher for extra support with a tricky math or reading concept, our students have shown their resilience and fortitude.

Over these past “pandemic months,” we’ve had four ambitious students study and pass one, two, or all four of their tests to complete their GED®. Pictured above is one of our recent graduate, Jasmine. We applaud Jasmine for modeling the importance of education for her three children!

“WE’VE GOT TESTERS!” Since re-opening our testing center on October 28, we continue to have a growing number of test candidates scheduling their GED® tests.

The COVID-19 safety protocols we’ve put in place have proven so far to be successful in allowing testing candidates to continue moving forward with their GED® studies during this time.

TRAIN FOR A NEW CAREER - APPLY TODAY!

L.O.G.I.C. (Logistics, Operations, General Warehousing and Inventory Control) is the warehousing and logistics training arm of Delaware Food Works, a workforce development initiative of the Food Bank of Delaware!

The next class begins March 22, 2021. Due to COVID-19, the class will meet remotely and in a small in-person group setting. Students must be available Monday-Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. for the training. Click HERE to apply today.

What is L.O.G.I.C.?
L.O.G.I.C. is an 11-week training program, certified as a trade school by the Delaware Department of Education, that prepares students for careers in the warehousing/logistics industry. Students will train in the warehouse of the Food Bank of Delaware in Newark. Students will learn to use major equipment like end riders, lift trucks, order pickers and pallet jacks.

Why L.O.G.I.C.?

• The warehousing industry is booming and pays well
• Employers are in need of well-trained, job-ready employees
• Student scholarships are available

Students have the opportunity to receive:

• OSHA-10 General Industry Certificate
• Forklift Certification

What are the enrollment requirements?
In general, students must be 18 years or older. You must have the physical abilities to work full-time and demonstrate the willingness and desire to complete the program.

The ITWorks tech training program is now accepting applications for our Spring 2021 semester. Technology jobs are in demand and now is a great time for young adults to get the training and certifications they need to enter the tech workforce.

ITWorks students receive 11 weeks of technical training, plus a 5-week, hands-on internship with a local corporation or non-profit. Throughout the program, students also receive professional development training with volunteers from local corporations like Accenture, WSFS Bank, Barclays, Oracle, SAP and more. After graduation, our alumni land jobs with companies like CHOP, PNC Bank, Independence Blue Cross and more. Watch success stories from our alumni.

Eligible applicants:

• Must be 18-26 years old
• Must have a high school diploma or GED®
• Do not have a 4-year college degree
• Interested in a career in technology

The Spring semester will entirely virtual and will begin on March 1, 2021. Laptops for remote learning will be provided.
