We Live the Word!
From the Principal's Desk
I pray this Newsletter finds you well!
In his book How to Read Literature Like a Professor, Thomas C. Foster remarks that "reading is a full-contact sport; we crash up against the wave of word with all of our intellectual, imaginative, and emotional resources."
As a literature teacher, I am particularly fond of the sentiment. Indeed, it hangs in a frame on the wall in Mrs. Sosa's classroom. But more than just a quote about reading, I think it is reflective of the work of education as a whole, particularly Catholic education. What occurs within the walls of Father Doyle School each week is far more than just teaching students to read, write, and solve mathematical equations.
Brett Salkeld writes in Educating for Eternity that, "Catholic education is designed to prepare students for the fullness of life in the here and now and also for eternal life." In other words, it is designed to prepare students not just to become scholars but to become saints. This is a monumental task made possible only when we "crash up against it with all of our intellectual, imaginative, and emotional resources."
And yet, I see this work occurring each and every day here at Father Doyle School. Whether it is the deep, beautiful conversations about love and friendship happening as part of our Friendzy program, or the simple acts of kindness I so often witness in our classrooms and hallways, I see a community committed to forming both saints and scholars.
So thank you for your continued partnership in this endeavor. It would truly not be possible to fully serve our mission without your continued support.
