Ranch Rainbows are the GREATEST!
A Message From Heather Patterson, GRHS Principal
Happy Sunday GRHS Longhorns,
Week two is a wrap, and Monday is a staff/student holiday, so we will see you Tuesday!
Now that you know where you are going in the building, it's time to settle in and talk about what creates a successful high school experience for you! It takes a clear VISION of what is expected of you, such as: following dress code, having your ID's on, adhering to the safety measures, maintaining a high academic focus, keeping your behavior in check, and lastly and most important...a sense of pride and school spirit for being a GRHS Longhorn! This will take you setting lofty GOALS (in and out of the classroom and on and off the field/court), and choosing to take ACTION on those goals...that's when the SUCCESS will start rolling in!
We already have so much to celebrate, and this week I wanted to spotlight two of our very own Longhorns being recognized as a 22-23 Rural & Small Town Scholars by the College Board National Recognition Program! Way to go Dominic and James! Who's next? You can start preparing for this now by taking and pushing yourself in PAP and AP classes don't give up when it gets a little hard! It is hard, but you can do it! If you will embrace the struggle and stick with it, your teachers will be there to support you, but you have to be the one to push through when it gets a little uncomfortable and hard..that's when the REAL growth happens! This is building your skillsets for post high school success, whether that is college, career, or military. Developing resiliency when life knocks you down, creating a work ethic that will ensure you will always be able to follow your dreams, and there is nothing like that sense of accomplishment when you look back to see all that you have achieved over your GR years! Graduation will be here before you know it!
I am expecting more GR-eatness from each of my 2475 Longhorns each week and will continue to keep you safe and hold you accountable for that GR-eatness that is already inside of each of you. Anyone in this building that is slowing that progess down by making poor choices that places our campus in danger of not achieving greatness, by bringing drugs, threating others, fighting, ect... will be removed and face swift consequences. Just this week we had our first visit from our LCISD's Police Department newest member, Jumbo! He is our drug dog that is trained and certified in Narcotic Detection and will be frequently walking the GRHS hallways, classrooms, restrooms, and parking lots to ensure that we are doing our best to keep our Longhorns safe! I love my job, because you are here...you are my "why" and I will do everything in my power to keep you safe, learning as a focus, and plenty of "ROWDY" spirit opportunities! I am so blessed and proud to be your Principal, and I do not take that for granted, even when I annoy you!

ALL GRHS ID'S HAVE BEEN HANDED OUT! WEARING YOUR NEW ID IS MANDATORY EVERY DAY FOR STAFF AND STUDENTS. You are accountable for following this safety and now dress code expectation every single day. There is a $5 REPLACEMENT CHARGE, so put it in a safe place each day!!
This year, as we continue to increase campus safety measures, students and staff are required to wear their GRHS identification badge at all times. This measure has also been added district wide to the student dress code. This is not a new expectation at GRHS, as I have had this in place for the past 4 years that I have been here, so our students/staff are well aware of this expectation and will be held accountable to it.
Student badges will serve as the student ID and SmartTag all in one card. With this ID our GRHS students are able to ride the bus, purchase breakfast/lunch, check out library books, able to use their personal devices (phones/airpods, etc) during lunch and advisory, and eventually we are hoping to use it to take attendance, as well! Stay tuned!
Refusing to wear your ID visibly on the top half of your body, is not an option, and will result in the consequences stated on the consequence chart below. Please make sure you are wearing your OWN ID.
Every GRHS student has been gifted an ID, protective plastic cover, and lanyard that was distributed in their English class. This was a huge undertaking to get this done, including 2500 minutes to print them. So do not lose it! It is imperative that our Longhorns adhere to this expectation, as this is part of the daily dress code for staff and students.
If you need another badge, or lose this one there is a $5 replacement cost. This is NOT optional, it is part of dress code. You can pay by cash or it will be charged to your student library account, for EACH replacement you need. Please note that a hold will be placed on your semester grades, transcripts, and exemptions if this fine is not cleared.
Need a REPLACEMENT ALREADY?
If you are needing to PURCHASE ANOTHER student ID, please use the QR code to request one, and you can either pay $5 cash when you pick it up, or we will charge your school library account if you do not have cash. Emails will be sent in Skyward to parent and student emails each time you are charged.
There is an easy fix....choose a safe spot in your backpack to put it at the end of the day (EVERY DAY) and it will be ready and waiting for you the next morning. High School is about responsiblity and accoutability, so this is your first test! You got this! But it is up to you!
Congratulations to Dominic and James for being recognized as the first 22-23 Rural & Small Town Scholars by the College Board National Recognition Program! Qualification for recognition is based on academic achievements & outstanding performance on the PSAT/NMSQT and/or AP Exams.
SENIORS Are you college ready? If you have not scored high enough on your PSAT, SAT or ACT scores no worries, you can take the TSIA2 test to show that you are college ready! Ms. Arias, the College & Career Facilitator will be meeting with each senior class to inform those students who need to take the TSIA2 test and help support you. If you still need to register to test, click the link below!
NO EXTENSIONS AND GUIDELINES MUST BE FOLLOWED! September 15th is the Deadline for inputting SUMMER service hours into classlink! have questions? please see mrs. arias in room 1500 or email her!
PAP/AP Level Drop Process- Must be Followed Exactly as Written!
At GRHS we strongly encourage our students to remain in their AP/PAP classes at a bare minumum of the entire 1st six weeks in order for them to get settled and give it a true chance. What seems inpossible at first ends up being the best thing for them to set them up for later success. The struggle is where the growth happens and our longhorns truly have what it takes, if they are just willing to work for it!
However we understand that extenuating circumstances may arise where a student may need a level change. Students can request a level change during the 1st progress report (Friday Sept 9th) and again at the end of the 1st six weeks (Friday Sept 30th)
If this pertains to you, please EXACTLY FOLLOW ALL THE STEPS BELOW and return this completed form to the Counselor Suite Office (room 2327),no later than 3:45 PM on the last day of the 3rd week (PR1, September 9, 2022) of the 1st six weeks, or the last day of the 1st six weeks (SW1, September 30, 2022).
Steps for students to level change
Step 1: Student receive form from teacher of record for the class they wish to level change
Step 2: Student Teacher Conference
Step 3: Parent Conference
Step 4: Student must bring form to Counselor Office by deadline (See form) (1st Progress Report and 1st Six Weeks)
Students must get form from their teacher of record for that specific class.
Dual credit students DO NOT have to wait until the end of the progress report to request a course drop/change. Their drops are tied to a refund and their refund depends on when Lone Star receives the request to drop, then we don’t make them wait if they want to drop a dual credit course. Dual Credit Course drop forms are requested by students from their alpha counselors. (Don't wait!)
Please Review the Early Pick Up Procedures!

fOOTBALL
The Longhorns took on the Katy Taylor Mustangs Thursday Night at Traylor Stadium. The Mustangs won the contest by a score of 16-0. Offensively, the Horns were able to move the ball but were unable to punch it in on the plus side of the field. The Horns defense kept it close with big plays by Henry Chuckwu, Trevion Aikens, & KJ McGuire. The Horns will open up district play next week against the Clements Rangers.
The Freshman Black team played a hard-fought game against Katy Taylor but came up short. With a couple of great drives to the red zone, the Longhorns were unfortunately not able to punch it into the end zone on those drives. Defensively, the Longhorns were able to keep the game close, but gave up two big plays that led to Katy Taylor's 2 scores. Overall, there were definite improvements by the young men, and they look forward to playing Sam Rayburn next week
