What is recommended for homework?
Cavazos approved homework: daily fluency practice in reading and math facts, daily sight words practice, high frequency words, spelling patterns, daily reading logs, key essential skills (Power TEKS) for practice purposes for Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies- ONLY
Parents and students will have access weekly homework and resources on the grade level site found on the Cavazos Webpage.
Cougar Camp - After School Program beginning October 3rd!
Who qualifies? ¿Quién califica?
Dear Families,
Cavazos is preparing to invite student that are at least one grade level below to participate in our After School Tutoring - Cougar Camp. Here are the qualifications:
1. ATTENDANCE: Children cannot be chronically absent, chronically tardy, or have chronic leave earlies , unless our families are willing to work with us to improve the child's attendance through a student attendance contract.
2. BEHAVIOR/DISCIPLINE: Student with extreme behavior issues will not be considered, unless our families are willing to work with us to improve the child's behavior through a student behavior contract.
If your child qualifies, please expect a pink letter in your child's backpack on Monday, September 19th.

Queridas familias,
Cavazos se está preparando para invitar a los estudiantes que están al menos un nivel de grado por debajo a participar en nuestra tutoría después de la escuela - Cougar Camp. Estas son las calificaciones:
1. ASISTENCIA: Los niños no pueden estar crónicamente ausentes, crónicamente tardíos o ser recogidos temprano crónicamente.

The Income Survey will determine economically disadvantaged status based on US Dept. of Agriculture guidelines.
We highly encourage you to complete this application despite free meal service on campus.
Parent & Student Lunch Dates - Begin this week!
Parent/Guardian & Student Lunch Date
Cavazos values the importance of family partnerships, and we know how many of our
families desire to have lunch time with their scholars, therefore below are the
guidelines and times that one family member can come and eat lunch with their
scholar.
Guidelines:
1. Cafeteria food trays cannot be shared with siblings or family members. If you
desire a food tray, the cost is $4.25 per tray.
2. Outside Food: You are welcome to bring outside food (healthy choices
recommended) for you and your student - ONLY.
3. Only one parent/guardian per lunch visit.
4. The seating area will be located on the stage.
5. Family members must sign in and wear a visitor badge at all times; ID required.
6. Adults can only use restrooms located in the foyer - no exceptions.
7. If a behavior conflict arises between your student and another student on campus,
do not address the other child. Please report this incident to the office, an
administrator will address your concern.
8. Photos: Limit taking pictures solely of your child; due to privacy laws all other
students cannot be photographed without parent consent.
9. Once lunchtime is over, please make your way to the front office, sign out, turn in
your visitor budget and exit the campus.
10. Please pick up after yourself and your students. Empty trash in designated
trash can.
11. No Leave Early requests will be approved when having lunch with your scholar.
12. School will designate 5 parent lunch spots per grade level; please sign up in the office. First come first serve.
13. Please make lunch date reservations one week in advance.
14. Parents cannot sign up for the whole year at once, one reservation per month, a week in advance.
IMPORTANT: Only 5 parents per grade level at each lunch date.

Safety Procedures & Protocols
Pick Up Time & Adults Behaving Badly
In the past weeks, Cavazos ES has experienced parents making threats to each other or our staff when picking up our scholars, specifically in grades 3rd through 5th.
Please be advised that we have reported these issues to the proper authorities and they will be conducting school visits to issue tickets. In the worst case scenario, the aggressor may be banned from school property.
Any adult making threats to each other and our staff will be immediately reported to the Ector County Sheriff and the ECISD Police. A picture of your vehicle license plate will be taken and immediately reported to the authorities.
Thank you for your support and for helping us keep our students, school, and staff safe.
This week is Safety Week at Cavazos ES!
Safety Week: Lockdown Drill
Dear Families,
This week is Safety Week at Cavazos; our students and staff will be practicing an unannounced Lockdown Drill this week. We are committed to keeping our school safe and we will continue practicing these drills with our students monthly.
What is a lockdown drill? (required two per school year)
Lockdown Drill: A response action schools take to secure interior portions of school buildings and grounds during incidents that pose an immediate threat of violence inside the school. The primary objective is to quickly ensure all school students, staff, and visitors are secured away from immediate danger.
What will your students be doing?
LOCKDOWN: “locks, lights, out of Sight”
Students are trained to:
• Move away from sight
• Maintain silence
• Do not open the door
Adults and Staff are trained to:
• Recover students from hallway if it is safe to do so
• Lock the classroom door
• Turn out the lights
• Move away from sight
• Maintain silence
• Do not open the door
• Prepare to evade or defend
REMINDERS: New Safety Procedures
- ALL parents must show their identification to pick up their children, no exceptions.
- ALL parents must sign out their children in the office.
- No underage person can sign out a child out of school - no exceptions.
All classroom doors and instructional areas must remain locked during the school day.
All campus safety drills will be scheduled by the ECISD PD prior to the first day of school.
- There will be weekly campus intruder audits by the ECISD PD. ECISD PD will report findings to the principal.
ALL visitors MUST present identification to obtain visitor badge.
All staff are required at all times to wear photo ID badges during work hours.
All classroom doors windows must be free of obstructions.
All classroom windows must remain locked at all times.
All classroom doors will be covered when a drill and a real incident takes place.
Barricade lockdown system must be used when practicing a drill and a read incident takes place.
ALL gates, means ALL gates - even if it's a fire marshall violation - our district/state officials will determine next steps - we are to comply.
~Technology Fees~
IPads & Chromebooks
Dear Families,
All of Cavazos students have received an iPad or a chromebook for the 2022-2023 school year, but we need you to pay a fee of $20 per child to use the device. Please stop by office or send your money with your scholar. We will issue your student a receipt.
Device Lending Policy - Technology Fee & Device Damages
Each family will provide a $20 fee per student enrolled in ECISD within 30 days of
receiving the device from the campus; payment is available online (PayPams) or to
the campus via cash, check or money order. A 3% surcharge will be included to
payments submitted online. Per the ECISD Handbook, principals are given the
discretion to waive this fee.
These $20 does not constitute ownership and does not insure the device for any incurred
damages.
For your information...
Keep toys at home...
Dear Families,
We are seeing student bringing toys from home; these toys are not allowed at school. Not only are they a distraction to learning but if they are lost or stole, the school is not responsible for any lost, stolen, or damaged toys. Any toy that confiscated will result in the following progressive discipline approach:
First offense: student conference
Second offense: toy will be confiscated; parent must personally come and pick up and hold a parent conference.
Third offense: toy will be confiscated for the remainder of the semester and the parent must come and hold a parent conference.
Fourth offense: toy will be confiscated for until the end of the year and the parent must come and hold a parent conference.
