Parents asked to provide feedback on State Survey
Opening tomorrow: Jan 30
Through the Illinois State Board of Education, parents have an opportunity to share their thoughts on the important elements of Leyden’s school effectiveness in a state survey called 5Essentials. This survey will be emailed to families tomorrow, and provides Leyden administrators with important information that helps to better understand the needs of our parents, students and staff.
In order to remain compliant with this state requirement, Leyden needs a minimum of 20-percent participation from parents, students and staff. Input is kept confidential and helps us understand our families and as we make decisions moving forward.
We encourage parents to please share feelings, insights, and perspective with us via this survey, which will open tomorrow and remain open through March 29. Students and staff will have the option to participate in this survey during a scheduled time in the near future.

SAT prep class available for Leyden students
Leyden offers an SAT prep class which includes nine evening classes and an optional Saturday practice test. Students will get the opportunity to take four total practice exams and receive 18 hours of classroom instruction delivered by Leyden teachers before taking the official SAT on April 16. Students who attend all sessions typically increase their scores by an average of 120 points.
Classes begin February 7, and run through April 11, meeting one evening per week. Students may choose to attend at East (Wednesdays) or West (Thursdays), and may select 3:15 p.m. - 6:15 p.m. or 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. Students may attend at either campus, regardless of their home school. The class is open to all Leyden students at a cost of $50.

Volunteers needed to assist with health screenings
Leyden is partnering with Young Hearts for Life® (YH4L) to offer all Leyden High School students a free, potentially life-saving ECG screening on Tuesday, February 27, at East Leyden and Tuesday, March 5, at West Leyden.
In order to offer this screening, we need volunteers to help. YH4L will provide training for all volunteers on the evening of Monday, February 26. Volunteers can serve all day or half-day shifts on Tuesday, February 27, and Tuesday, March 5. Volunteers must be over 18 years old and not currently attending the high schools. YH4L provides double-rate volunteer hours for these trained volunteers.

One Amazing Story: Leyden students visit O'Hare hangar
Leyden automotive students gained behind-the-scenes access at the American Airlines hangars at O’Hare International Airport during a special field trip that we hope might become an annual event. During the visit, students were able to visit the hangars, view the inside of the planes’ mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, baggage compartments, and even sit in the cockpit and review the instrument panel. They witnessed real repairs in progress, watched planes get taxied in and out of the hangar, and learned about the physical structure and engineering of the current largest hangar in the world.
