From the Assistant Principal
Dear Crabapple Crossing Community and Staff,
This week we kicked off the official Fall season although Mother Nature is still showing signs that she wants an endless summer. Wednesday was Dr. Williams' last day at CCE and was filled with a whirlwind of celebrations and emotions. Thank you to everyone who played a role in her sendoff. From showering her with love, to her very own walk of fame, we wanted to make sure she could feel the love and joy she brought to CCE. We will all follow her new journey in Clarke County and know that she will do great things there. We will all remain focused on and committed to our school mission, vision and collective commitments that make CCE such a special place to be. After all, #CCEistheplace2Be
I am thrilled to be leading alongside Mr. John Anderson who will begin with us on October 1st. When I first transitioned to Fulton County Schools, it was Mr. Anderson who hired me at Hillside Elementary. Due to low enrollment, I was sent to Esther Jackson Elementary so I never formally had the privilege to work with him when I was a teacher, but kept close tabs on him as an Interim Principal through the years and hoped that at some point I would get the chance to work with him. It's always interesting to see how things fall into place when you least expect it. I am confident that during his short stay with his he will love CCE, our students, families, and the community as much as I do.
This week, my husband Luke and I had a great dinner at Vintage for Spirit Night with our CCE families. I can't think of a more delicious way to give back to our school and PTO and support our community. He was able to enjoy his favorite meal (pizza) and get to know even more of our CCE Colts. We look forward to seeing more families at our next Spirit Night or some of the Milton home games!
As we begin looking forward to Fall, outside of college football since my FSU Seminoles are struggling to make my Saturdays enjoyable, one of my favorite CCE events will be happening very soon under the big top! GLO FOR IT will be kicked off with a Circus theme this year and I am honored to say I get to join in the fun as the Ringmaster!
Fundraising will begin on October 4th and our goal this year is $100, 000. I just know we will exceed that by leaps and bounds, based on last year, and cannot wait to see how much we raise together! Through your generous support, our PTO will continue to be able to provide technology, curriculum support, school-wide events and meet classroom needs. So in the famous words of PT. Barnum, "The noblest art is that of making others happy" . GLO FOR IT does just that for our school community but none of this would be possible without your support of GLO FOR IT and the volunteers who put this event together for our students.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!
Save the Date for IOWA Testing
Students in grades 3 and 5 will be taking the IOWA Assessments the week of October 21st through October 25th. The purpose of this norm-referenced test (NRT) is to obtain information about how the performance of Georgia’s/Fulton’s students compare with that of students in a national sample, an external reference group. The results are used for evaluation, decision-making, and instructional improvement.
Testing will take place from 7:50am until approximately 11:00am. To ensure that your child has an opportunity to perform at his or her best, you can help by taking the steps listed below.
1. Ensure your child is present and on time each morning. Avoid scheduling doctor/dentist appointments during the testing period.
2. Discuss the importance of testing with your son/daughter in a supportive, nurturing manner.
3. Limit evening activities prior to testing so that adequate time is provided for rest.
4. Provide a nutritious breakfast at home or encourage your son/daughter to eat breakfast at school.
5. In the event an emergency arises, please contact your student’s teacher.
Results for these assessments will be provided to the school that administered the test.
Score reports are expected to arrive in late November. Thank you for your cooperation during testing. If you have questions regarding any aspect of testing, please contact the school at (470) 254-7055 or your child’s teacher.
We will have no guests for lunch during the testing window.
Attendance & Tardies
Fulton County Board of Education Attendance Protocol
The Fulton County Board of Education considers regular school attendance essential to successful school progress. Students must be present to take full advantage of available educational opportunities. Student attendance is very important. When a student misses more than six days in a school year, this counts against our school rating otherwise known as CCRPI. When students are healthy, it is imperative they are in attendance.
Within 3 days of the last day of the absence, a written excuse (email preferred) from parent/legal guardian or doctor is required upon returning to school.
Excuses can be submitted by:
- Email to teacher and data clerk /Handwritten note
- Fax or Doctor’s note Please provide a doctor’s note for each doctor’s visit.
- If a student has been diagnosed with a communicable disease (ex. strep, chicken pox, etc.), and a doctor’s visit has occurred, please request a doctor’s note with the diagnosis noted. This helps us keep track of illness trends.
UNEXCUSED Absences
An absence, for any reason other than those listed as excused, will be an unexcused absence. Please plan vacations, trips, doctor and dental appointments when they do not interfere with school. Excessive absences will be referred to administration. If a student is absent 3 consecutive days and the school cannot get information as to why, a referral will be made to the Social Worker. Below is the unexcused absence policy at Crabapple Crossing Elementary:
3 consecutive absences - Classroom teacher contact via phone
3 unexcused absences - Administrative contact made via letter
5 unexcused absences - Administrative contact made via mail / Social Worker notified
Tardies
School begins at 7:40 a.m. and ends at 2:20 p.m. Students are to be IN THE CLASSROOM BY 7:40 a.m., seated, and unpacked OR are considered tardy. It is the responsibility of the parent to see that the student arrives on time. Oversleeping, car trouble, car pool lines, heavy traffic, weather conditions, etc. are not legitimate excuses for tardiness. When your student arrives late to school (after 7:40 a.m.), you must park your car and accompany your child into the building, sign-in at the front office, and get a tardy slip from the secretary. Students who ride the bus to school are not considered tardy even if their bus arrives after 7:40 a.m.
Fulton County tardy policy is as follows:
5th Tardy - “Warning” letter sent home with student
8th Tardy - Tardy letter sent home with student
12th Tardy - Tardy letter sent home via USPS /Tardy referral sent to School Social Worker
20th Tardy - Administrative contact to parent/guardian, Attendance contract required, Follow-up by School Social Worker
