Dear Families,

Mo Bissonnette visited the school Thursday morning. The children were so so happy to see him and freely expressed their love for him. It was very touching to see. The 2/3 class even managed to create Valentine cards for him pretty much on the spot. He is doing well, working hard in his new position, and misses WES a lot.

Family Game Night, tonight, 6:00-7:30, following the Fire Department’s Spaghetti Dinner - Bring your favorite game to play or try a new game from our collection! Card games, board games, etc. (No screens!)

This is a family event! It’s expected that children come with their family and stay

with their family throughout the evening.

Valentine’s Day: The card-making is underway and the bulletin board is looking beautiful! Please stop in to see it!

Morning arrival - some thoughts about ensuring a good start to the day for your child, Installment II: It has been wonderful to see how well families have responded to last week’s message. It’s also been evident that some younger students are working on getting into the building and down to the classroom on their own, in some cases adding riding the bus to their repertoire.

One practice that can make mornings go smoothly is to have your child create with you a short checklist (visuals can be helpful) of what they need to get ready the night before (lay out next day clothes, pack up and put their instrument and music near the door, pack sneakers for P.E. days (Tuesday and Friday), etc. A morning task list can also be helpful based on your family’s routine. Two rules of thumb for this practice are to construct the lists with your child so they own the tasks and for you to presume their competence: have them do everything on the list they know how to do - independently. (Teach and practice what they haven’t mastered yet.) This lets them know you have faith in them and their capability. It will also likely reduce the number of rescue trips you need to make to the school and take you out of the professional reminder role.

Afterschool playdates reminder - Please make arrangements for playdates ahead of time and not in the parking after school. It is evident that spur of the moment requests from children can easily slip into big feelings and power struggles with parents. It is also evident that other students watching these negotiations often feel excluded. Thanks so much for your attention to this.

Families Together- Please see the linked flyer for the revised series. There will be four sessions, 5:30-7:00. While it would be ideal for folks to come to all of them, Mrs. Hayyat, our school counselor, has designed the sessions so that each parent training can stand alone. (There is no training component for the children.) Dinner and childcare will be provided. Please contact Samantha if you plan to attend a session.

This year, ACSD is partnering with Dr. Rebecca Eunmi Haslam of Seed the Way LLC to advance our commitment to equity and justice. Dr. Haslam’s focus is on understanding the impact of racial and bias-based harm in our schools. Her work is designed to inform ACSD’s policy and procedures, increase more inclusive classroom practices, and leverage decision-making in meaningful ways. We hope this work will increase the restorative and reparative experiences for students, staff, and faculty in the ACSD community.

Dr. Haslam has completed the first phase of her work at MUMS and MUHS which included meeting with students and staff directly. She is now set to begin phase two which will focus on students and staff in ACSD’s elementary schools. The complete announcement and plan for phase two will be shared with all ACSD K-5 families in March, with a phase two completion date of June 30th. Please be on the lookout for the invitation to participate in this work.

Upon completion of both phases, Dr. Haslam will share findings with incoming Superintendent Dr. Wendy Baker in preparation for ACSD’s implementation of the ACSD Strategic Plan for Equity.

Ilsley Public Library is challenging the youth in our ACSD community to read 15 titles from the various local and state youth book award lists (Red Clover, Golden Dome, Midd Reads, and Green Mountain) between January 1st and March 31st. Tracking sheets will be sent home today. Youth who read 15 books will earn a ticket to a special movie showing at the Marquis Theater in April! (Weybridge will make sure everyone who qualifies has transportation to the event.)
