2. ASK YOUR CHILD ABOUT ❓ 🍽️ 💬
Research suggests that having dinner together as a family at least four times a week has positive effects on child development. Family dinners have been linked to a lower risk of obesity, substance abuse, eating disorders, and an increased chance of graduating from high school.
Eating dinner together as a family provides the opportunity for conversation. This lets parents teach healthy communication without distractions from smart phones, television, computers, and mobile devices.
Discussion tips: It is easy to be confused or frustrated by choices teens make but asking “why” can make them feel defensive or unsure how to answer. Instead, try asking “how” questions that show you are curious and encouraging problem-solving steps as well as develop confidence in their decisions and capable of figuring things out on their own. Having tough conversations with family requires a healthy relationship base. Make sure you carve out time and space for these important conversations.
Conversation starters:
- Tell me one time you think you made a good decision. What about one bad decision?
- Tell me a time you made a mistake but then worked to fix it.
- If there was a magical fix to one of your current problems, what would it be?
- Do you think it is possible to have more than one solution to a problem? How do you pick which solution is the right one?
Activity:
Use problem solving steps to think through a problem for practice. (1) Identify the problem, (2) Consider possible solutions, (3) Select a solution, and (4) Give that solution a try. Media can always be used for conversations if a problem has not arisen and this is a proactive conversation.
