Kaikōura Suburban School
Newsletter 9 Friday 24 June 2022 - Matariki
Tumuaki/Principal Pānui
In this time of Matariki it is a time to reflect and remember on the years past, the people who have past and to look forward to the future by preparing the ground for planting, creating goals and aspirations for the year ahead.
As a kura/school we have set forth our aspirations to deepen our story of who we are. We start by looking to our schools history, its people and the surrounding lands, the takiwā that our school sits upon. Sitting beneath the beautiful mountain Mount Fyffe/Te Maunga o Kaiterau offers a truly breathtaking landscape upon which to do so. The constant presence of the mighty mountain in our central view echoes to us our school whakatauki/motto Kia eke eke taumata - Climbing to new heights. Reminding us of how our learning journey's is a reflection of this climb. As a teaching and learning process through L4L we use this metaphor of climbing the mountain to help us understand the highs, lows and the process that happens when we learn, discover and create new things. Our teachers/kaiako are currently writing the learning journey's for all of our children in the first cycle of the L4L - learning for life inquiry this year.
This week we had the team from Te Whare Haumanu - Te Rūnanga o Kaikōura came to school to share the Te Tau o Wairehu o Marokura - pest control program. Our school was gifted a pest control trap and bait which we hope to set in an area needing protection. This was a great ignition to the beginning of our second L4L inquiry for 2022.
Wishing you all a happy Matariki and wonderful prospects for the coming year.

Date of the Whale Run: September 10th 2022
Tania Ross is helping with updating the website and promotions on social media. If this is an area of interest or expertise another person supporting in this role would be great.
Tania and Alicia are working on timers, finishing shoots and course markers.
Cara Parsons is organising the marshalling stations and other people to support this would be great.
We also need to re establish a the Home and School committee. This is the schools parent teacher association, this group coordinate food stalls for the day.
Hali Wade is helping gather all the equipment we have at school for Whale Run and assess what we need.
Jodie Hoggard is coordinating road closures and planning, waste management, portaloos and other logistics.
I have had a few other parents contact me to let me know you are happy to help. If you wish to help with the above mentioned jobs please either contact the people assigned to these roles or contact myself.
There are a number of small jobs that need to be done, rechecking with sponsors who have offered to sponsor us for 2020 and 2021. Due to the event being postponed both years it is pertinent that we reconnect with them. Collecting sponsorship as well. We offer advertising for this through social media and the website.
The new courses, 21km, 12km, 5km are mapped out there needs to be follow up on the location and number of course markings and marshalling points.
This Wednesday 29th June there will be a Whale Run meeting at school at 4pm. I hope to see you there.

Ministry of Health Website - Influenza
We have had very little Influenza circulating in our communities since the pandemic began and this means our community immunity is lower than usual.
If you do catch the flu, it is important that you stay away from work or school. Look after yourself and your family. Rest and fluids are especially important.
Symptoms can come on suddenly and can include fever, chill, muscle aches, runny nose, cough, and stomach upsets.
Lego display - Our School's Entry
This year’s theme for the “Schools build” for Inspiration Corner is Emergency Services. This is on in the school holidays from July 18-21. We would like to again enter a school build display. If your child has any lego that fits this theme and they could or would like to lend it as part of the display please send it along next week and then the students can put the display together. We will ensure it is returned safely to them after the competition.
