PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
“Why fit in when you were born to stand out?” - Dr Suess
Too much time and energy in life gets spent trying to fit in…trying to be seen as “normal”. I often wonder why so many of us try to fit into a perceived idea about what it is to be “normal”. After all, why be normal when you can be exceptional?
When something simply “fits in” it is too easy to blend in, to go completely unnoticed. But when something stands out you cannot help but notice it. You cannot help but have your attention drawn to it.
I found myself at a vineyard over the weekend and came across a magnum of Rosē that was not normal by any means. It stood like a gangly teenager towering over the other wine bottles. Totally ‘out of shape’ compared to the other magnum bottles of different vintages surrounding it, this one caught my eye for reasons beyond normality.
The winemaker then told me the story of this bottle’s struggle - how the labellers and bottlers refused to complete the final part of the wine’s journey because the bottle was too long and it literally didn’t fit in their machines.
At this stage some winemakers would have given up with the exceptional bottle idea, and just gone along with the status quo - the usual suspects of a typical 750ml bottle. But this wine was born to stand out. So despite the struggles of hand filling 500 bottles and sealing them with wax in a slow cooker, the fruition of an exceptional wine, in an exceptional bottle through exceptional circumstances resulted in one of the best wines I have ever tasted or seen.
For our children, every day they have the choice to focus on being amazing…to go beyond the average or the typical….they have the choice to be EXCEPTIONAL. My message to them:
Why follow the crowd when you can be leading it? Why shoot for ordinary when you can be SPECTACULAR?! Be proud to STAND OUT! Be confident to stand up for what is right, even when you are the only one doing it. Don’t lower your standards to fit in with the crowd. Instead, let your example be what lifts others around you to raise their standards to yours. Be a leader. Stop worrying about fitting in and start aiming to STAND OUT!

A huge shout out to all the members of the HFN who went above and beyond to deliver a night to remember for our students at the end of last term.
