Graber Olive House Tour 1/11/19
EVENT WEBSITE:
https://www.graberolives.com/Default.asp
DESCRIPTION:
Join us for an educational tour of the historical Graber Olive House! Afterward, you can browse the beautiful gift shop!
The Graber Olive House in Ontario, California, is the oldest operating olive packer in the United States and it is still family owned by the third generation, Clifford and Maura Graber.
-Tours last about 20-30min
-Tours consist of our canning facility, in which you get to see old machinery from the late 1920’s that we still use today. We go through five rooms total where production takes place during our harvest season in the fall.
-Our Graber difference is that we wait until the olive is fully mature on the tree to hand pick each and every olive 2-3 at a time by hand.
- We know when it’s ready to be picked when the color changes to a reddish/maroon color.
-We don’t pit them due to the soft texture when they fully mature but you can pit after they’ve been canned.

Chino Creek Wetlands Educational Tour
4th-12th grade students will participate in a FREE guided nature walk and three additional programs led by the Chino Creek Staff Naturalists:
Guided Nature Walk: Students will be guided through the Chino Creek Wetlands and Educational Park to observe plants and wildlife. Students will utilize their senses as they explore, and using checklists, students will observe and monitor the wetlands’ habitat. Students will engage in discussions about wetlands, habitat loss, the impact of human interference with nature, and develop an appreciation of wetlands and natural resources.
Microscopic Pond life study: Following a brief introduction and discussion on pond life, students will use microscopes to view pond samples. Students will view pre-assembled slides and write their findings on an activity sheet. A discussion on their findings will follow.
Edible Aquifers: Students will learn about aquifers, groundwater and pollutants. The students will create an edible model of an aquifer, which includes groundwater (clear soda), sand and gravel (cookie crumbs), rocks (gummy bears), and clay (ice cream). Students will then simulate how “pollutants” (sprinkles) enter an aquifer. Then, using a straw, students will “drill” a well in the middle of their aquifer to simulate how water is pumped from the aquifer. A discussion on pollution sources will be included.
Wetlands Metaphors: Students will learn the value and role of wetlands and make comparisons between objects through metaphors. Each object represents a function of the wetlands. Students will explain how the object is a metaphor for a wetland’s function (ex. A sponge would represent the function of water retention in a wetland).

This Week's Vendor Spotlight: Tinkergarten with Nicole Cloeren
This week we are spotlighting a vendor in the Riverside area! Here is a little about Tinkergarten from Nicole:
"My name is Nicole Cloeren and I am a local Tinkergarten leader in Riverside, CA. I love playing and learning in nature with kids and their caregivers! In our classes, kids enjoy the freedom of independent exploration through well-designed play-based activities. We love to make mud and make believe with our nature treasures!
Tinkergarten’s expert-designed curriculum helps kids ages 1-8 years old develop, grow, and gain confidence, while they enjoy fun, engaging experiences in the physical freedom of their local green space. Our curriculum is based in research and best practice to promote the development of critical capabilities, including self-reliance, creativity, persistence and problem-solving. The child's parent or caregiver attends class with their little explorer, nurturing their bond, observing and supporting their growth, and sharing in the fun activities together. Classes are 75 minutes long and take place once/week in sessions of varying length, from one to twelve weeks.
To join a free trial class, or learn more about Tinkergarten, please visit: https://tinkergarten.com
You may also contact me directly at nicole@tinkergarten.com If no free trials are currently being offered, I am happy to have you attend one of my paid sessions for free. Currently, I offer classes on Tuesdays for 6-8 year olds from 9:00-10:15 am; and on Wednesdays and Thursdays for 18 month - 5 years old from 9:00-10:15 am. Classes are in the 92506 area. I look forward to meeting you!"

This Week's Curriculum Spotlight: All About Spelling
There is a reason why this program is used by so many in the homeschooling world. Many families have found success in its teaching method. A method that focuses on teaching the “why” of spelling and it uses a multi-sensory approach to teach that “why”, for easier teaching and better retention.
The program begins with teaching sounds. Next, the child learns how to segment words.
The hands-on part of the method comes in the form of letter tiles. “All About Spelling” comes with letter tiles for each of the 26 letters and also for common letter blends. The children use these letter tiles to identify sounds and to segment and spell words. This is a great program for children who have difficulty with fine motor skills because the children initially learn to spell with the tiles. If your child really has difficulty with writing, you can teach “All About Spelling” using the tiles exclusively.
Here is a review from a homeschool mom:
“All About Spelling” gives many different options for teaching the concepts and gives teaching tips for when a child makes mistakes or doesn’t understand something. It also includes additional practice words for children who grasp things more slowly. This makes the program very easy to implement no matter who you are teaching or what their learning style.
- Multi-sensory teaching style
- Logical, incremental approach with lots of built-in review
- Time intensive for the teacher – This isn’t a “go study your spelling words” program. Each day the teacher sits down and works on spelling with the child.

Educational Website and Teaching Tip of the Week: Using Lapbooks in your Homeschooling!
We LOVE using lapbooks in our studies. It helps keep all the information together in one spot and the children are able to refer back to one spot when wanting to look up a subject.
Show us your lapbook creations on Social Media! We'd love to see them!

Audrey Everson
Hi everyone! I am a mom of 3 awesome kids ranging in age from 10 to 6 years old. My husband and I are high school sweethearts and have been married for 16 years. Having homeschooled our children over the last 6 years in 3 different states, I've found homeschooling here in California, especially with Inspire Charter, has been a great fit for our homeschool journey. I am grateful for our ability to homeschool so freely and I aspire to assist other families with their own homeschool adventures!
